Roger Ricker Post-Election Thoughts...Thanks and more

I wanted to post this article to recognize Roger Ricker for his ambition, enthusiasm and dedication regarding his efforts towards the town of Media.  Running as a candidate for a political postion takes a lot of time, focus and commitment.  Running into the head wind of your own party, requires much, much more.  It appears the Media Democratic Party never intended to have an open primary, but hoped no one would figure that out either.

Roger unfortunately lost in last week's Primary, but he's showed a lot of people that he's got the grit and fortitude to continue making an impact for the good of all of Media. Good Luck, Roger!

(Ed Note: Roger did not submit this to ATM, but the statement was used in this post as reference from his Facebook page)

Roger Ricker

Now that the 2011 Democratic Primary is over, I would like to thank the 116 (or 114, depending on where you find the tally) voters of the Borough of Media who took the time to vote for me, a first time candidate who was running unendorsed by the local Democratic party.

Those voters actually used their own will and made their own choice to vote for the candidates they found to be the best on the ballot, rather than simply following the endorsed choices handed to them on a flyer at the polls. These were voters who decided that their choice was the best choice.

I do have, however, a question about the endorsement of the Democratic Party and would like to open it up for discussion.

My question is this: How is it that a member of the Democratic Committee---the very Committee that decides who is endorsed or unendorsed--was himself a candidate? How can this member of the Committee place a vote as to who the party endorses? Obviously the deck was stacked against me from day one as this person was also running for the same office I was running for (Media Borough Council).

Secondly, when the question arose for the Committee to decide whether it would be an open primary--in which all candidates fend for themselves--or whether they would endorse three candidates, it seems logical that this person voted to not have an open primary and chose to endorse himself plus two others.

It is unfortunate that the integrity of the Democratic Committee has lost its luster. I speak not as a sore loser (the amount of votes I received as an unendorsed candidate create much enthusiasm for my local political future) but simply as a resident of the borough who feels that the public was duped into believing that the Committee made an unbiased decision based on who is actually best for the future of Media.

Let's put it this way: If a man sells chocolate and sits on a Committee that decides whether it's best to eat corn or chocolate it is obvious that the chocolate-seller is going to vote against the corn. And the Committee will then tell the public that it has decided chocolate is best. And the public is none the wiser, as they take what the Committee says for granted.

I implore the public, in Media and at large, to begin to question what you are told and to base your choices on your own thought process, trying to discern for yourself as many angles as you can and to stop taking for granted that everything you are told is what is best for you.

Thanks again to those of you who voted for me. My platform of a restructured Media Business Authority (which really should be called an Association) and less cronyism in Media will walk with me as I hope it stays with those of you who pushed the button for Roger Ricker.

Sincerely,
Roger Ricker
Media Borough

Temaki Sushi Bar opening in May.......

Temaki Sushi Bar - N. Olive St.
Things are coming along with the opening of Media's latest restaurant, Temaki Sushi Bar located on Olive St.  The decor is shaping up to be much, much different than the last sushi establishment.  The tree trunks add an interesting flair, as does the stone walls.

Due to limited space, the setup looks to be of a sit at the bar" format, as opposed to an open table restaurant.

Media Borough Receives a Second offer for 1. West State Street

At last week's Borough Council Meeting, it was announced that a 2nd offer was submitted for 1. West State St. The bid came in at $20,000 over the initial bid of $650,000.  The offer came from Claudio Sandolo, a well know and successful restauranteur who owns Spasso, an Italian grill in Old City.

In concept, another restaurant theme sounds much like the deal that Dan Brodeur proposed back in 2005.  Unfortunately, we went from a bid of $1,000,000 back then, to entertaining $670,000 now.

Media's Bipartisan Coalition Defeats 28 years of Democratic Cronyism and Political $$$

Not only is Media's bipartisan coalition, led by Pete Alyanakian and Monika Rehoric getting needed bridges repaired, they're also defeating the cronyism and political $$$ kick-backs that have plagued this town for so long.

Political Kick Back to the Democratic Machine
To my surprise, and perhaps yours; the former borough engineer Sande F. Walton was not only making an annual political contribution of $1,250 to the Media Democratic Party for years, he was also at the time the Chairman of the Brookhaven Democratic party.  So who was working for who?

How can Media residents in good faith be assured that fees charged to the borough (i.e. $240k 3rd St. Bridge) were not politically influenced?  Even more concerning is what else has still yet to be uncovered after 28 years.........?

The changes that took place last year which removed the majority leadership from position was the right thing to do.  It may have not be clear at the time, but it's now becoming apparent why the bipartisan coalition needed to act independently.

Media's not a social club for the local political elite, it's a town for everyone.

3rd Street Bridge in Media....continued coverage by Patch.com

More local coverage by media.patch.com on the 3rd St. Bridge announcement.  Many will try to take credit for their input towards the resolution of the bridge, but the real effort was accomplished by the dedication of Pete Alyanakian and Monika Rehoric who worked on many levels to resolve the lawsuits and funding that were holding this effort up for years.

After 13 years of lack of direction and a cost to borough tax payers of $240k, this could be the  biggest story of the year.

Media's bipartisan coalition resolves 3rd St. Bridge lawsuits.....Media is closer to getting a Bridge

Borough Council May 2011

Kudos to Pete Alyanakian and Media Boro council for resolving the 3rd St. Bridge lawsuits that have held up the repair of the bridge for 11years. Leadership matters.  More has been done towards fixing the bridge in the last 9 months, than the last 11 years!

The bridge could now be opened by 2013.....more to come.

Primary Election Coverage here at Allthingsmediapa.com

The weather forecast for tomorrow's primary election is calling for rain.  Typically, off year primary's are light turn-outs, bad weather proves even more so.  Either way, be sure to get out and vote.

Will be covering the tomorrow's election on a limited basis and will provide timely updates and posts throughout the day.  We'll also post unofficial election results shortly after the polls close at 8pm.

As a candidate myself, I am unopposed in the Primary (i.e. I'm not running against someone in my own party for a seat), but I'll still be out and about checking on the polling locations to make sure things run smoothly.

I want to quickly thank those who are helping out and staffing the polls.  People truly have no idea what goes on inorder to have these precincts open and functioning.  We'll have our challenges tomorrow, but we'll all work together regardless of party to make sure it happens!

Lastly, good luck to the candidates.

Registration for this year's Media 5 mile race is closed.

Candidates for Rose Tree Media School District - Performance Proven!

As as candidate for Media Borough Council, I've been busy the last few weeks discussing the many issues important to Media.   One of which is the leadership for the Rose Tree Media School Board.  With 70% of the taxpayers not having children in school, this is a very important item that's on a lot of peoples minds.   I've had the opportunity to meet and discuss at length with the 5 Republican candidates who not only understand this, but have worked to hold the line on taxes.

Chris Guilday, Bill O'Donnell, Liz Schneider
Nancy Fronduti, John Hanna
The three candidates on the board that are up for re-election are Bill O'Donnell, Nancy Fronduti and John Hanna.  Their experience and leadership is well known and proves to be a winning combination for quality schools at affordable costs.  There's a great write up of their efforts in this week's Town Talk.

Per Town Talk Article:
"In spite of the challenging economy and a loss of $1.2 million in state funding for education, Rose Tree Media School District’s proposed $80.7 million general fund budget for 2011-2012 calls for no property tax increase."
"O’Donnell also had more good news for residents, even though there was only a handful at the meeting. He said there will be no cuts in existing educational programs or services during the coming school year."

Liz Schneider and Media resident, Chris Guilday are highly qualified candidates that are also dedicated to providing exceptional education while balancing fiscal responsibility.

Media, Pa Getting Another Restaurant.........Temaki Sushi Bar

Media has two great sushi places on State Street with Margaret Kuo's and Azie.  Last weekend I found that Temaki is coming to town and will be located on N. Olive.  They had sushi at this location before, though the vibe and decor seemed a little off compared to the ambiance of the other places.

Much like the well established pizza places in Media, this market will be tough to break into, but we hope it does well and opens soon!

John's Grille in Media PA goes Smoke Free

It was one of the last places were you could smoke in the bar/restaurant, but as of today, John's Grille is smoke free.  The last two remaining places that still allow smoking are Jocyln's and Jack's Place in Upper Providence.

Being a non-smoker, I had a tough time going into John's because of the smoke.  You really seem to notice once you've been away from it for a long time.  I'm glad they made this decision, truth be told, the have some of the best food in town at very reasonable prices.
