Media in Two Minutes - Special Thanks to Media Police, EMS, Fire Dept and Volunteers

Congratulation to all the runners at this year's Media 5 Miler 2013.  I know the participants had one heck of a time.  A special thanks to the Media Police, EMS and many volunteers, who without them, we would not be able to have this popular event.

Media's Best Band - The Broozers at Media's 5 Mile Race

I heard from one business on State Street that Friday night was one of their biggest nights of the year.  That's great news and shows how important it is to properly market this town throughout the year.  I'd also like to thank the great folks at County Beverage for the ice and beer they provided for a party I had.  I know you can get beer and supplies cheaper, but the delivery they provided was more than worth the price and I'm glad I can help them out.

Ok, let's GO!

ATM Coverage:
Thanks to everyone who tweeted at: #media5miler over the course of the race.  That's some pretty interesting feedback, with cool pictures coming in throughout the day. As an added take away, the live Twitter feed on the right side of this site has been updated to cover businesses and really, all things media.

Best Breakfast in Town!
When we hit the lazy days of Summer, I'm thinking of doing "Media In Two Minutes" down at John's Bar and Grille on Sunday mornings.  Not sure what kind of audience we will get....at a bar.....on Sunday morning; but we will give it a shot.  Maybe we will even do a quick 1 minute video segment of what's happening around town.

Next Sunday, Media's Best Breakfast at the Media VFW
The last Sunday of every month, the Media VFW hosts the best homemade breakfast in town.  Last month they had a record turn-out, so get there early.  If you'd like to volunteer, let me know.  I'll be there and they can always use the help. Breakfast is served 8:30am till 11:30am.

Fireworks in Media
There haven't been fireworks in Media since they last had a show in Glen Providence Park back in 1986.  Most of the municipalities in the county have done away with the tradition, but there are still a few.  Delcotimes.com usually has a listing of where you can watch them, so I'll keep an eye out to share.

I saw at Costco last week specials where you can buy an arsenal of fireworks for $150.  Any more, it looks like residents have taken pyrotechnic displays into their own hands.  I don't know what the ordinance on block firework parties are, but perhaps Media borough should just let people know what that entails.

Fourth of July vs. Bastille Day
Ok, this comes up every year, so let's just address it now.  Media doesn't have a Fourth of July parade, despite the displeasure to quite a few.  Almost on queue, someone will come up to me on the street and assertively point this out to me and continue to complain we have Bastille Day celebration.  I don't mind Bastille Day, in fact I was in St. Tropez last year to see France's version of this holiday.  The point is, I don't think this day diminishes the Fourth of July.  That's not going to go over well with some, but if someone wants to step up and plan something for this town during the 4th, let me know, there are plenty who will help.

In the meantime, Media's VFW will have a big BBQ in celebration of Independence Day.

Scooters on State Street, but not on sidewalks
At some point the borough should consider adequate motorcycle and scooter parking on State Street, but in the meantime, you aren't allowed to park a registered vehicle on the sidewalk.....and that includes scooters.  The Media Police will ticket, so now you know.

  1. One thing to keep in mind is that Bastille Day celebrations in Media are organized and run by the Media Arts Council (MAC) and coordinated with second Saturday in July. If there are people in Media who want to see some recognition of the independence of OUR nation, they should organize an event or join MAC and put something together.

I would be extremely disappointed if the Borough organized Bastille Day events but failed to acknowledge the birth of our nation. This is not the case however. I know that some people would love to nail the Borough government, or Council for the celebration of Bastille Day but not July 4, but that is not the case.

  2. Can somebody explain to me why the majority of our local elected officials (and candidates) seem to be focused on "progress" while ignoring the basic problems with governance in our little borough? Seriously, the "marketing" of our borough!? That effectively has been delegated to the MBA, a public Agency under State law that operates in violation of the Sunshine Act as a money laundering body that allows Council to spend $75,000 taxpayer dollars each year outside of the public eye.

    1. And you can prove this, how? I love "anonymous" posters who make insulting and ridiculous claims with no proof. The members of the MBA are your neighbors and local business owners. If you want to know what's going on, just ask.

    2. 1. Borough Council created the MBA under the Municipalities Authorities Act in 1985.
      2. The MBA is an Agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, subject to certain laws including the Sunshine Act.
      3. Borough Council annually includes a lump sum line item of $75,000 for the MBA (per the Borough's website).
      4. The MBA meeting minutes are posted online and include no reference to an official action to pay the bills.
      5. The minutes of a public Agency are required to show official actions.
      6. Thus, there are at public dollars being spent outside of the public eye.
      7. Because Borough Council allocates those funds, they are just as culpable.
      8. The Sunshine Act pretty much says I shouldn't have to ask my neighbor about this stuff.
      9. People have the right to remain anonymous, unless they are elected officials (Council, Mayor) or appointed officials (MBA Board).

    3. Go away with your logic and reasonable approach, Bates! Be gone with you!

    4. To "anonymous", what happened to you? A simple solution would be to challenge at a council meeting.

    5. Under normal circumstances, you would be correct. But I've witnessed firsthand what happens to those who even remotely question Council's motives. The Mayor shuts it down, dismisses people. This forum allows one to raise legitimate concerns with no fear of retribution, giving elected officials an opportunity to fix what's broken before the next election. You know they read this, but will they accept the challenge and take corrective action. Only time will tell.

    6. Anon 7:06: are you kidding me? It is better to rant about this crap on a blog and assume that Borough Council reads it, than to SHOW UP at a Borough Council meeting and go on the record with a complaint or issue? Are you serious?

      Delete
    7. Don't kid yourself. They all read it.
And those who don't hear about it from borough staff and friends.

    8. are you saying that this blog is not worthy of crap?

    9. Actually, alleged violations of the Sunshine Act are under the purview of the Court of Common Pleas not Borough Council meetings.

    10. It is laughable if you think elected officials should be held accountable to what is said in comments of ANY blog. Show your face at Council meetings, go on the record. Your say will be heard. Keep going to the meetings, make your presence known. It is easier to hold an elected official accountable if there is a record of writing him/her letters, addressing the council at meetings, etc. than holding them accountable to respond to comments on a blog.

    11. Laugh all you want. That's no excuse for continuing to do the wrong thing.

    12. So I'm reading this blog where somebody seems to have knowledge of a problem involving potentially illegal behaviors involving Borough Council. I don't know whether any of that is true, but they also seem fearful of retribution for calling out Council at a public meeting. So what's wrong with posting the information here. Clearly the owner of the blog has no problem posting it.

    13. There is no problem with posting anything you well please on this blog. The problem is, if you expect Borough Council to respond to the issues you raise solely in the comments section of ANY blog, you're delusional. Post all you want here, the dialogue here is fine. If however you want things to change or issues brought to attention, start organizing your neighbors of like mind and attend Borough Council Meetings. Once there, speak your mind at the time of public comment. Write letters to the members of council, and cc local newspapers. Get involved outside the world of the comments section of ATMPA. If you feel there is some impropriety, bring it up to your local state reps and the D.A. of Delco, if you are not finding resolution with Borough Council.

    14. Apparently way to logical and civilized for whoever this blogger is. In a way, don't you think this blogger is doing all of us a favor by allowing Council to address these potential issues before going to the DA. If there is any problem, it seems easy to fix going forward, with no action needed at a public meeting. Besides, if nothing happens, those up for reelection lose one vote. Big deal.

  3. Hey Borough Council, I hear my neighbor cutting his grass right now. Unfortunately, your discriminatory borough code doesn't allow residents top cut their grass on Sunday. Section 203-4.B states, in part, "No person shall operate or permit the operation of any tools or equipment used in construction operations, landscaping, leaf removal, lawn care, drilling or demolition work or in the sweeping of parking lots in areas adjacent to residential districts or within 1,000 feet of residential districts between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following day on weekdays and Saturdays or at any time on Sundays or legal holidays, such that the sound therefrom is audible across a residential real property line (boundary), except for emergency work." Instead of focusing on "marketing", either remove this discriminatory prohibition, or enforce it. Either way, Tedman, this is the very basic stuff that Borough Council has ignored for years. ...

    2. Lawful activity becomes illegal if it's done on a sunday? Very religious and very discriminatory. The sunday portion needs to be struck from the ordinance.

      Delete
    3. So you're angry about a law that you don't like NOT being enforced? Okay..I'm lost at your outrage.

  4. Call the council prez so he can bore-a$$ them into compliance.

    1. So you're telling me I can't do yard work on Sunday?

  5. Seriously... How is it possible in 2013 that a government could have such a discriminatory law. They're basically legislating that Sunday is the "day of rest". If that's not an indication that it's time for a change, I don't know what is.

  6. Only republicans and some independents are persecuted. If your not one of them, or a dem that can be trusted, you should be okay.

  8. This is ridiculous. How long has the current mayor been in office? How many councilmen have come and gone? I can't understand how something so stupid could still be a law.

    1. Challenge it at a Council meeting. Simple.

    2. That's always your answer, isn't it, Bates? "Civic engagement." Smacks of socialism to me, but then you'd fit right in with the rest of the tree hugging elites of this borough. Isn't there some fair trade chocolate with your name on it that needs to be eaten? Go pick some up at Seven Stones Cafe and "read" your "books". While you're there get some Obama Kool Aid! Sheeple united will never be defeated!

  9. Welcome to Media, where you can carry an open beer in public on a Friday but you can't cut your grass on a Sunday afternoon.

  10. Hire a landscaper. If you live in Media, you can afford one, who works weekdays.

  11. i beleive this was intended for commercial operations on commercial properties, so as not to disturb residents. but like Mr Bates said, just ask council or borough manager, you know what happens when you assume....

    1. This is easier, and allows for true leaders to live up to their obligation to serve all the people, not just those who celebrate the sabbath on Sunday. Commercial property owners deserve equal treatment, too.
