Should Media Borough begin to charge for Saturday Parking?

An effort is underway that will to allow the borough to charge for Saturday parking on State Street. Technically, the meters stipulate payment is required Monday thru Saturday, but this has never been enforced.  Now it looks like Borough Council is about to change that.

What are your thoughts?  Should parking remain free on Saturday, especially on State Street, or should that change?

  1. No, that's what small towns are all about. Welcoming in people to shop on their weekends off. Charging during the week days is enough!

  3. No!!! I will echo what another person posted: keep it free to encourage shopping and dining!! They need all the help we can give. Keep Saturday parking free!

  4. Honestly it costs $5 to park for 8 hours. If that is the amount that's breaking your wallet, perhaps our fair trade goods are not exactly in your budget. Free parking does not encourage shopping/dining, it encourages people to leave their cars there all weekend from a Friday night binge. Heck the upper level of the one lot is $2 for 8 hours. Seriously? Are we actually fighting this minor amount of cash that goes back into the borough?

    1. Residents can obtain yearly parking permits so they don't have to feed the meter.

  6. I'm all for it! This should actually free up spots on State Street that are currently taken up by employees of business on State Street. Parking is $.50 an hour - if that is truly a hardship, you're not spending money in the shops and restaurants anyway.

  7. Media probably needs the money to pay for their stupid legal fees preventing the opening Third Street Bridge. Yet, another tax on businesses.

  9. There is a limit on State St now. ..3 hours I think. Of employees are feeding the meter they should be ticketed. The original idea for meters was just that reason open space for shoppers...all night parking is addressed by NO PARKING6 to 7 AM. To accomodate street sweeping...not enforced by the way.Meters do discourage shopping..free parking on Saturday should be part if an advertising campaign...revenue to boro is lost when people shop elsewhere. .how much will it cost to hire a Saturday patrol ?

  11. So long, Media. Hello, Delaware on Saturdays. Plus no sales tax. I don't want to worry while eating lunch if I fed the meter enough.

    2. To be honest, the bigger problem with parking in the borough is a lack of spots on State Street. Charging for parking on Saturday should increase the turnover in spots, thus allowing more people to find a spot close to a business. I'd be willing to bet quite a few of the spots on the weekend are occupied by folks who aren't shopping for long periods of time. I don't see a downside to this.
