Wawa gets Media Borough Counciled!

I saw it coming a long time ago and even mentioned last year that the Wawa project would befall the same fate as Third Street Bridge: lack of leadership, communication, inability and personal agenda.   We as a community have gotten too use to this, but perhaps this borough council is more inept then I give them credit for.  I mean, if they can't figure out when to mail a letter, as was the case two weeks ago that required a vote, then why should anyone have the expectation for them to find a solution to Wawa?
Sort of like being Punk'd, but worse.

Over 19 months this project has been presented 14 times to this borough, and yet on Thursday evening, borough council implied they still don't have enough information and now have further demands.  During each and everyone of these meetings, it's like borough council is hearing the whole matter for the first time.  It's the 11th hour and now Councilman, Paul Robinson wants and economic impact study to see how Wawa will affect the area?

Media, this is now political obstruction stuff, not objective governing borough council was elected to uphold.  You may remember a few years back when Mr. Robinson thought it shortsighted to sell 1 West Street for $1 million, only to eventually sell it for $650,000. The $350k difference would have been huge for this town.

Borough Council Meeting Minutes, May 2005
Media Borough Council seal of approval

It's easily understood and predictable:  Media borough council will throw up so many hoops for Wawa to jump through, that they'll get fed up (maybe we're at the point now) and abandon the project.   Media Borough will then go on to say it wasn't their fault that Wawa cancelled the project.

Yet when Mayor McMahon wanted to spend $20,000 for an infomercial that no one saw, they had immediate conference calls, skipped the bidding process and fast tracked the whole thing in two months with a company fined for fraud!  They apparently understood how to spend our money, as for understanding the economic benefits a Wawa would bring, not so much.

Lastly, they've pushed any final vote on Wawa out to November, which is after the local elections.  How convenient.

  1. "this is now political obstruction stuff, not objective governing", quoth the Raven. Hmmm, sounds like the Media Council clownage picked up something from the extremist goofballs in the US House of Reps.

  2. Did they do an economic impact study when double decker pizza came? As well as every other business? Sounds discriminatory towards Wawa.

    1. Not if we petition for 6th Street "Residents Only." And have a Media police officer enforcing it.

    2. If you don't like traffic then don't buy a house in the down town borough. Do you think only the people who live in the borough should shop in the borough? Businesses will close down real fast if that were the case!

  5. Goodbye small business, hello Wawa!

  6. Sad but so true, a great little town fails to be as good as it could and should be due to poor leadership. As for Mr. Robinson, a few years ago even the Dems did not want him, but due to a dearth of quality candidates in the Primary, they turned back to the retread and as he is a "D", he got elected. This is the same man who, when he saw a former Republican council person at the existing WaWa, let loose with a string of loud obscenities such that many folks, myself included, suffered from his limited vocabulary and total lack of class! And he is a leader????????? Ouch.

  8. Who are these clowns that are supposed to be the leaders of Media.I grew up in Media a long time ago before all the bars and stuff. Just like the beautiful hotel and restaurant that was built in Springfield these supposed leaders are missing out on another opportunity for more tax revenue and more jobs. I guess they have questions about this so called company known as Wawa. Please somebody get into office that puts the town and its people first and not personal agendas. To the leaders if you think I'm wrong look in the F!@#ing mirror.

  9. Am I missing something? Couldn't Mr. Robinson, with his wealth of Media municipal knowledge and 'inside information' on things like business taxing rates, property tax rates, etc figure out an estimate of the revenue into the Borough from a Wawa? Aside from the new paving and road improvements that Wawa shows on the plans at their expense? I'm not understanding where he feels this is budget negative to the Borough, aside from the incredible hours of time wasted debating the issue.
Another observation: last week's meeting was packed with residents from Nether Prov twp asserting their injustice to the building of the Wawa, however, where was the solicited and accepted input from residents in Upper Prov when it came to the CAC and Third Street? UPT residents were told in no uncertain terms they could not be involved in the CAC, even if they lived on Kirk Lane! Are we now picking and choosing which townships we will consider when making decisions? Seems hypocritical to me!

    1. Frog Slayer, you are right in your analysis. I agree with you. It is more than hypocritical, it is a double-standard.

  10. In response to the first comment under this entry. You are comparing apples to oranges. While I agree that this borough council is a collection of "obstructionists," it is unfair and ignorant to label the US House of Representatives as "extremist goofballs." How is Constitutional adherance considered extreme? This governing body is acting lawfully and within their Constititutional confines. See Article 1, Section 7 for further reading. But I digress. I agree that this borough council is just politically posturing. They can call it what they want, but Mr. Robinson needs to check his ego at the door and get out of the way to allow private business to service this wonderful town. I find it disgusting to put Wawa through all these hoops and miles of red tape regulatory procedures. Let this be a warning for Media Borough council.....You serve this town and its people, not yourselves.

  11. If the borough is deliberately trying to discourage the Wawa, is the reason entirely due to traffic concerns or are there other reasons also?

  12. I see one side of things well explained here, but the Delco Times article on the meeting seemed to indicate that there were more voices in opposition to the Wawa due to unexplained traffic concerns than there were voices in favor of the project. Is the leadership of the borough expected to green light every proposed building project?
