Media Film Festival April 5th - 6th 2013

We are quite lucky to have our own Film Festival here in Media.  That's not only a great achievement for the town, but shows the focused dedication of the Media Arts Council who work hard to put these events on.  As popular as this festival is and the attendance it draws, it could be better.

By better I mean having this event a the historic Media Theatre instead of community center that has the ambiance of a plastic cup.  I don't know if it's because of scheduling, money or politics, but to not have a "film festival" in our town's theatre really never made sense to me. And from the comments I get, doesn't make much sense to others either.  People love to go to this theatre and they like film festivals; combining the two would be a win-win for the everyone.

Despite the venue, make sure you go to this event.  Tickets can be purchased online and this year's line looks spectacular.

The Media Community Appreciates Our Postal Workers!

Thanks! Media Post Office Workers!
I had a resident contact me this week who was quite concerned and upset at how the Post Office workers at the Media branch were being treated by patrons.   I haven't been there to see it first hand, nor am I here on this blog to tell people how to act, but if it was a big enough issue for this person, then it's definitely worth bringing to light with the rest of the town.

I know the local Post Office has had their fair share of cut-backs and at times can be short staffed, but a little compassion goes a long way for these folks.  To the Media Post Office:  Thanks for your hard work and dedication towards our town.  Thought at times it may not seem like it, your services are valued and appreciated by the Media community.

From a concerned reader:
Hello atm! I am requesting a public service announcement from you.
I have been to the Media Post Office twice a week for business for the past year and I am very dismayed at the general attitude of the patrons in the past 6 months. I realize that the office is dealing with budget cuts and having a hell of a time, but the folks that work in there are nothing but gracious and kind. I, for one, love our clerks up there, but they receive the most rotten treatment from people who are in line waiting to be served. It seems like in these times of "I want it and I want it now!" the patrons of our office have left their manners at the door! They gripe and loudly complain and act childish about having to wait in line for their turn. On some mornings there is one person working. It can be a few minutes before you get served, but people act like it is the biggest inconvenience and quite frankly act like a bunch of asses.
I am tired of it and feel like our hard working postal workers not only deserve some respect, but a break from patrons dumping on them for doing the best that they can. Please put something out there! An article, a sign, a picketer!
Thanks!

Why didn't Mayor McMahon and Borough Council notify the community on the Third St. Bidge offer?

If the situation with the Third Street Bridge hasn’t crossed the line of no return, which means never being fixed, then it took one giant leap towards the abyss last week.  What Borough Council never shared with anyone, was an offer they received from BLCC to move the project forward with a deal for a one-way roadway.   In good faith to the community, BLCC offered a condition that a one way would be acceptable, as long as the design was approved by a third party to someday, if needed, include the dimensions and parameters to accommodate two way traffic.  BLCC also was looking for the borough to assume a ⅓ of ongoing maintenance and responsibility.

For attempting to get this project moving, understanding that the funding could be lost and addressing the safety of one of PA’s most hazardous dams; the intent by BLCC was not only a start, but leadership we haven't seen from our elected officials.  However, as expected, borough council couldn’t get themselves collectively together to even address the the offer, AGAIN!.   In fact, I’m told they couldn’t even come to a consensus on what they wanted.  No counter offer, no nothing.  Let me repeat hat again, NO COUNTER OFFER, NO NOTHING!!!  Millions of dollars on the line and borough council must think it's okay to wait out another 18 years.

Isn’t this one-way configuration what Borough Council wanted for the last year?  Party Chair, Deborah Krull stated a one-way compromise would be good for the town in an article she wrote last year.  She even went on to say in her own words,  “But ultimately, Borough Council did its job.” That’s not only an absurd statement, but they’ve taken this project backwards to the point, it may never get done. With no other options and zero cooperation from Mayor Bob McMahon and Media Borough Council, BLCC proceeded to file an appeal Friday morning with the court over the disputed stipulation that was thrown out. That means it’s back in the courts and will be for sometime.

HE NEVER SAID A WORD! HAVE YOU HAD ENOUGH, MEDIA?
So much for leadership you can trust and transparency.  Mayor Bob McMahon had many opportunities to speak up about this issue, but chose to remain silent.  This is what’s wrong with Media and has been for decades.  People just using their positions for personal interests and political agendas, while the rest of us, as taxpayers wonder how these issues will get fixed in the borough.  They are not even disclosing important information with the public.

Lastly, a member of borough council a few weeks back called up BLCC after the stipulation was thrown out an inappropriately taunted them with comments like “you lost”  and “...you better get onboard or lose your lake.”  Not only was this the last offer, but last straw.  And its not just one person on council, as I've gotten other complaints of bullying.  It's completely unacceptable that this borough council can make threats to people, groups and neighbors of this community. Regardless of what you stand for, that's WRONG!.  Who's next?  Wawa? Media Real Estate? MBA? Businesses? Residents?............You?

This isn't local governing, it's back-room scheming.

It's Media in Two Minutes

Happy Birthday Media Trolley!
Media Trolley Turns 100 Years Old!
You don't look a day over 100! That's right, the Media Trolley will have its 100th year anniversary coming up this year.  I was contacted this week and informed Septa is looking to hold a celebration for this historical mode of transportation.  Media is the last town in America that has a trolley running down its main street.  What better place to hold this event than Media when it comes to knowing how important the trolley service has been to our community.

Here's something to think about.  What if the Media Trolley was free, forever if you boarded at the Providence Road Station?  I'll share more about that later.

Indian Lane Teacher: Mr. Woods
I had Mr. Woods in 5th grade and to say he left a lasting impression, is an understatement.  It's great to see he's still teaching and getting recognition for his efforts.  He started out at Roosevelt Elementary School, as did I as a student.  An excellent school and education is direct reflection of the teachers.  I'm lucky to say I had both.

Picasso's - A good place to see a show.
At one time there was live music every weekend in Media.  Now, it's not so easy to come by as most restaurants seem to shy away from this kind of entertainment, especially in the colder months.  Picasso's on the the other hand, has a really nice stage and accommodating atmosphere to see a band.  There's a stage, good sound, seating and adequate room for dancing, as was the case on Friday evening when local favorites the Broozer's played last Friday.  Nice setup!

Media Lions - 4,000 Easter Eggs is no small feat.
Media Lions Easter Egg Hunt
When I stopped by yesterday's Easter Egg Hunt held by the Media Lions, I was impressed with all the work they do for this event.  When a young participant came up and proudly told me there was 400 eggs out there, I immediately thought, "WOW."  Then when a volunteer said there were actually 4,000, I nearly fell over.  Somebody had to make all that happen and that was the work of the Media Lions.

A special thanks to Mccarrin Chiropractic and Physical Therapy Center who plays a big role in this event too.  Everybody had a great time.

West Fourth St.
W. Fourth Street - New Homes
I was quite impressed with how well the new homes are coming a long on W. Fourth Street. Sometimes builders get this right, while other times they don't when it comes to blending new homes into the surrounding neighborhood.  Looks like Martini construction did their homework and took the time to achieve a this balance.

Bad Timing? Missed Opportunity?  Lack of Interest?
Springfield Hotel - Opening Summer 2013
Those thoughts all may be true for Media when it comes to a hotel here, but in Springfield their hotel efforts continue to make impressive strides.  Foundation is coming along with framing right behind it.  I don't believe it'll be done for the influx of people expected to attend the U.S. Open in June at Merion, but it shouldn't be that much beyond that.  The expected opening date is sometime in Summer 2013.

Committees - The Political Pawns of Media, PA
Make sure you pick the right committee to volunteer for if you think you have something to offer Media borough.  In other words, if you speak out against the political agendas held by the current council, you'll be dismissed as advisory with no decision making capability.  Based on last Thursday's council meeting, the Planning Commission who recommend proceeding with zoning for the Wawa, was banished to this group.  The Media Business Authority who also supports a Wawa based on an adequate traffic solution, I doubt has ever been taken seriously by borough council.  Expendable pawns in the eyes council.

But not their beloved Citizens Advisory Committee for Third Street.  Not only was it "stacked" with council's friends, family and special interest , it was heralded as the be-all-end-all decision making force for the Third Street Bridge.  It wasn't just propped up by Media Borough Council, but anyone defying their recommendations were immediately attacked as shown by Councilman Paul Robinson.  Here's what happened there:  Co-chair of the CAC who resigned due to slanted interests of the committee - never addressed.  RTM School Board? Angrily called to protest their involvement.  Middletown and Upper Providence, told to stay out of Media Business. EMS (Fire, Police, Ambulance) never given a formal chance to speak, though adament about the need for an open roadway.

END GAME: Wawa  - Same problems, Same Outcome
It's not too hard to see through the clutter of what is going to happen with Wawa.  Much like the Third Street Bridge, it'll get bogged down and perpetually stalled due to lack of leadership.  The outlook isn't good if Council President Hall, is dismissing the recommendations of his own planning commission.  He could care less what they or the MBA think.  This will just be strung out until he and borough council can come up with a good reason to kill it.

It would be nice if Mayor Bob McMahon would stop being a participant and actually spoke up and took a position on something........anything. Bad leadership, begets more bad leadership.

Here we go again........Borough Council Confused Again on Propsed Wawa Site

When Council President, Brian Hall says "It's a complicated" matter, start preparing for a long, confusing explanation with no end.  That was his favorite term for the Third Street Bridge, which still isn't done after 18 years.  Now he's using the same terminology for the proposed Wawa site.
Wawa gets the runaround by Boro Council

It's really quite simple Borough Council: Do you want a Wawa or not based on the 6 to 1 advisement by the Planning commission that recommends a zoning change for this type of business?  Yes or No? Instead we get double talk by Borough Council that the matter is confusing and the planning commission really is just an advisory council.  Translation: We (Boro Council) could care less what the Planning Commission thinks.

However, if you remember when the Citizen's advisory council was created for the third Street Bridge, this council couldn't wait to praise their faulty recommendations and defend their positions.  But if you don't get inline with this council, well then your committee will just be spoke down to and dismissed as an advisory one. How insulting to the people of Media.

What an embarrassment to the community and to companies looking to do business in Media.  Things need to get done around here, not swirled around for years with no clear direction and the hope that if it's ignored enough, it'll go away.

Transition Town Media - March 24th 2013 Event

Media's Americana Roots Ramble - April 20, 2013

Here we go!  This year's Roots Ramble will be on Saturday April 20, 2013.  Of the three music festivals Media has, this one in my opinion is the best.  Check out the site for up to minute details on this event.   They can always use a helping hand, so consider volunteering to help setup for the shows.

Media in Two Minutes - Happy St. Paddy's Day!

Media in Two Minutes!
Happy St. Paddy's Day!

First thing first!  St. Paddy's day in Media isn't quite on par with Springfield PA, when it comes to celebrating, but don't think we don't get our green on here.  In fact, for the hardcore faithful, Media's own Irish Pub, Sligo's kicks off the day today at 9am.  Stephen's on State will be joining in too, with the Plumstead also showing its Irish colors with the traditional green beer.  A lot of the local restaurants serve cabbage, ham and potatoes and I hear Fast and Fancy restaurant does one of the best meals around.  They were packed on Friday.

Double Decker Pizza is on Deck
Double Decker Pizza Coming Soon!
I didn't realize how extensive the renovation work for this restaurant was until I drove by.  They're taking down walls, adding windows and gutting a large part of the building for this two-story eatery.  They'll be at it a few more months, but looks like they're bringing their "A" game to what is a very competitive "pizza" market in Media.  Looks like they'll have adequate parking too.  They'll be located at the 400 Block of Baltimore Ave.  (down the street from Starbucks)

Media Fig - Spring 2013 Edition
These ads and photo shoots aren't cheap for local businesses to be featured in Media Fig, but WOW do they capture a feel of Media!   Spring's edition doesn't disappoint when it comes to giving Media a swagger.  Good job, Fig.  I haven't seen the actual hardcopy and if you haven't either, check out the full featured online edition.

I'd also like to acknowledge Media Real Estate who I know made some generous contributions for a few groups to be represented in this issue.

Media 5 Miler
Friday June 21, 2013 is the date the for the Media 5 Miler.  The house parties may have become bigger than the run itself.  If you haven't registered, you may want to look into that as this sells out quick.  Here's the link, registration to run in this race is now open

D'Ignazio's Towne House Restaurant
The last of the family owned restaurants?  Media is unique in its own way, but losing the trolley or an iconic restaurant like the Towne House would definitely leave a gaping hole in what truly defines Media.  There are great, popular restaurants here, but none like D'Ignazio's. I miss the Long Horn Ranch and the Log Cabin Inn and hope the changing times don't take another family restaurant.

Media Residents Deserve Answers!
Is anyone paying attention on Media Borough Council?  The Mayor?  People shouldn't have to drive around the southern end of Media only to look at an abandoned building with no answers on the future of the property.  What's going to be built here and when? Why hasn't a hotel started? Will it be a hotel? Why hasn't this been knocked down? Why was is robbed last year for copper? Can a hotel now compete with Springfield's?  18 years and they still can't get a bridge fixed, but here we are 7 years later looking at this abandon building and proposed site for a hotel.  This situation isn't helping property values.  People deserve better representation! Perhaps if council showed up to meetings, we'd have answers.

It's official! This year's Media Five Mile Race will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013. Registration is now open!

Race Day: June 21, 2013
The Media 5 Mile Run is a big event for Media, and so is the official announcement for the date of the race.  Here you go, Friday June 21, 2013 is the day with the race starting at it's traditional time of 7pm!

The running world has gotten quite popular over the years, so make sure you register early to get a spot.  This race always sells out and does so quicker each year.    Registration is open, so don't wait!

You don't show up for meetings, you don't get re-elected! Period

Don't get Fooled Again Media, PA!

The writing was on the wall back in 2011 when Councilman Eric Stein failed to show up for half of his meetings as liaison to the Media Business Authority (MBA).  A committee that is entrusted with providing a vibrant economic environment for local businesses, while promoting Media as a destination for area visitors.  With the committee receiving tens of thousands of dollars from Media borough taxpayers, it's an important position.

Have you seen Stein? The MBA hasn't
However, cronyism by the current Media Borough Council runs deep.  So deep, that council President, Brian Hall appointed him to again be liaison for the committee in 2012.  No one really knows why.  This was done at about the same time Council Davidson asserted that anyone missing three consecutive meetings, would not be supported.  I guess that didn't apply to cronies, but it should have.

Councilman Stein went on to miss another 7 monthly meetings in 2012.  At one point, he missed a span of 8 consecutive monthly meetings!!!  As disrespectful as that is, even the members of the committee had concerns about the absences as shown in the meeting minutes.  Yet, instead of correcting it, borough councilwoman Monica Simpson defends it by saying his heart was in it.  RIDICULOUS!
Media Business Authority Meeting Minutes May, 2012
And Eric Stein thinks he deserves to be re-elected?  The last two years prove he doesn't even care about showing up, let alone doing the job.  This is the exact problem I've been talking about for the last year.  Nothing is getting done in Media because people on borough council feel they can do whatever they want and not be held accountable.  Why? Because they don't believe residents will vote them out.

Insult adjacent communities? No problem as far as Councilman Robinson is concerned.  Conflict of interest over Third St?  Not if you're Councilman Davidson.  Address a school (Nativity) that was in the community for 100 years? Council President, Hall never felt the need to even mention it.  $20,000 for a 5 minute YouTube Video? Mayor McMahon didn't even care the Florida infomercial company was investigated and fined for fraud.  Nor did he explain why it wasn't put to bid to a local company. That was July 2012 and we still haven't seen the video.

Media Borough is seriously broken.

Here's to the Dog Owners in Media! A great article by Dr. Sam Lemon

I have a dog, but we definitely don't run in the same circles that a lot of other dog owners do here in Media, it's an "dog" thing.  There's no doubt that "Everybody's Home Town" surely extends that charm to creatures of all sorts.  Even the fox and skunks over on 6th St.   However. if you're a dog owner, and walk around the courthouse during the evening, you'll know what I'm talking about.

There's Chili and Mugsy and a whole host of Media dogs who with their owners love to socialize and catch up on what's happening in Media while walking around the courthouse grounds.  They like to joke that they know more about a person's dog, than they do about the actual owner.  Hey, life can be simple sometimes.

So, for all you dog lovers out there, check out a great article about what makes these animals so special by Media resident, Dr. Sam Lemon.

Media in Two Minutes!

It's Media in Two Minutes, though with so many things going on, this may take us a little longer.

Ok, Let's Go!

March is Women's  History Month
In recognition of this important month and all the women out there, I wanted to share an event being held March 21st at Neuman College - Women In Leadership.  The lecture will include an All Star lineup of women CEO's from around the area.  Neuman has a great leadership courses for those looking to develop their skills and abilities in these roles.

Pizza comes to the Plumstead
I never knew why they didn't have it before, but they've always had a pizza oven, which I'm sure is vintage by now.  Who knew?  Recently, the Plumstead Inn began including pizza pies on their menu.  I'm not a big pizza guy, but I have to say this isn't bad at all.  Thin crust, choice toppings and mysteriously non greasy.  Are they on to something?  They could be, so check it out and let me know.  And in true Plumstead fashion, a bargain! $6.95 for 12" pie.

Bevans Candy
With Easter closing in, be sure to get you candy orders in to Bevans!  And don't by a box of butter creams and leave them in your truck.  You'll eat'em like popcorn, trust me.

House with a Pool!
We're not only getting a bigger "House," it's also coming with a pool.  Yep, that's right, "House" restaurant will be taking over the dining facilities at Broomall Lake Swim Club.  Check out their latest Facebook page regarding the announcement.  I don't belong to BLCC, but I'm sure this will be welcomed news by members.

Media Planning Commission - Thank YOU!
The announcement last week about Wawa was pleasantly surprising news regarding the plannings commission's request to rezone the lot for this store.  What's equally admirable, is the leadership and poise the Planning Commission showed with coming to a consensus and voting on this issue.  This project still has a long way to go and is far from a done deal, but it's encouraging to see leadership and decisiveness for projects like this.  People really took notice of this news. Check out the letter to the editor!

Buddy's Burger, Breast and Fries
Take your pick!  From what I hear they are all good.  No word on when the opening date is, but restaurants in Media typically open a few months after their papers are finalized.  As for the milkshakes they are bringing to town, let me just say this, Front Street Fountain makes the best milkshake I've ever had!  All in good fun, but looking forward to the big opening.  Welcome to town, Buddy's!

Head Shop?
I had no idea what that meant until this week, but it appears one is coming to Media along with a large selections of cigars.  From initial reactions about this store, this is going to ruffle some feathers.

PACE ONE? Edgmont and Thornbury quietly taking on the restaurant scene
La Porta has made a name for itself and with as much as an hour long wait on a Saturday night, that didn't happen by chance.  I think their food is some of the best around and it appears others think so too.  Right around the corner you have Grace Winery.  It's not a restaurant, but as close as you're going to get to Media's own Napa Valley....check it out on a Saturday. Recommendation: Sangria made on the premises.

What's also coming a long is the new restaurant that  will be replacing the well known and closed Pace One.  I don't have all the details yet, but it's happening with renovations well underway.

Edgmont Pharmacy......Wait, in Edgmont?!?!?!!
Since we're on the topic, I'll through in a bonus.  Yes, I heard there was interest in bringing a box store pharmacy to the corner Middletown and Gradyville road.  I also heard this weekend that the deal didn't get very far.  The former Edgmont Fire House has been for sale for years, though nothing is going there yet.

Grocery Carts
I understand there is a need sometimes to take a grocery cart off the premises to get you groceries home, but I don't understand why they aren't returned and left just anywhere.  Veteran's Square looks to have it's own lot for these right on the sidewalk.  This week one was left right on the corner of Orange and Franklin.

Resident speaks out over Third Street Bridge
Local resident, Michael Jordan writes letter to delcotimes.com regarding lack of progress on Third Street Bridge.

Third St. Bridge: Back to Court March 13th

Though Media Borough Council was successful in having the court order stipulation dropped, Judge Proud is not quite finished with the whole ordeal and has asked the parties to return to court March 13th.  I'm not quite sure what that meeting will entail, but I do know that with the stipulation dropped, this whole situation is back to where it started 17 years ago.  That means all those petitions, citizen advisory committees, surveys, meetings and who knows how much in time and money, was a waste for all of us.  Mayor Bob McMahon, Hall, Davidson and Robinson really hyped it up over the last year, but turns out, that's all it was - HYPE

Unfortunately, that also means financing secured for this project is in jeopardy too, if not already reallocated to another project.  I don't know the time frame on what will happen there, but I can call PennDot to find out.  Last time I did, they hadn't been informed that this was back in court.  With the continued undermining efforts of Media's Borough Council, that doesn't surprise me.  The true victims of this are the taxpayers.

Speaking of council, I did see a local politician by the name of Bill Clinton at Trader Joe's in Media today asking people for signatures for his campaign.  I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but was told by his assistant that Bill supports a two-way roadway.  I'm sure that will be an interesting campaign topic for Mr. Clinton in the months ahead.

Update: Media Parking Meters take credit cards

It surprises me that Media Borough doesn't provide any announcement about the new parking meters or how they operate, but then again it really doesn't.  This week a few people contacted me about how these work and why do some have credit card slots, but don't allow you to insert your card.

Ok, first off, if you're looking to pay by credit card, make sure it looks like the one in the photo to the right.  You can review instructions and Frequently Asked Questions in a prior post.

As for the plain meters that look like they have a credit card slot, they don't work and should prevent you from entering a card.

Here's something I didn't know about these meters that was provided by a commenter:
"I would add one item to your FAQ's: If you pay with your prepaid smart card and return to the meter to find leftover time, you can re-insert your card to refund the leftover time to the card. Kiosks won't do that, nor will coins nor credit cards. :) "

Brandywine Valley Craft Brewer' Festival - May 18th 2013

Saturday, May 18th 2013
You can tell we are getting closer to Spring when announcements are made for Media's annual events.  The dates for the Media Five Mile race and music festivals should be shared soon, but in the meantime, Saturday, May 18th will be the day of the Brandy wine Valley Craft Brewers' Festival held by the Iron Hill.

This is not only an extremely popular event, but a generous one too for the community.  Proceeds go to the Media Youth Center - and the numbers are impressive.  Back in 2010 that total amount exceeded $75,000 since its inception.  With this being the festival's 13th year, it may well be over $100,000 in donations to Media.

As popular as this Festival has become, so has the attendance.  In fact, this sells out very quickly and there haven't been tickets sold at the door for years.  Checkout what's in store this year on Media Dish.com who has a great article on the event.  There's also a link on their site to purchase advance tickets.

Here comes Mom Prom - May 4th 2013

You can check them out on Facebook too

Hi!

The MOMS Club® of Media is sponsoring an exciting event this May.  The Aston and Media Mom Prom is a benefit to celebrate and honor moms.  It will be an evening of drinks, desserts, and dancing--the ultimate ladies night out!  While this is a ladies only event, it is not a moms only event. All proceeds benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This year’s Prom is at the Barnaby’s in Aston on May 4, 2013 from 7pm-11pm.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $45 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 200 research projects nationally.

We are very excited about your products and we are hoping that you will donate a prize for our raffle or silent auction.  In return, your contribution will be acknowledged by mentioning your donation on our Facebook page.  Your donation would be tax-deductible.

Your participation in this celebration will broaden your exposure to many moms and women in Aston and Media, while simultaneously assisting Alex’s Lemonade Stand.  Last year we were able to raise $6900 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand!!!!  Your donations are key to raising money for a great cause!

We are very excited about our 2013 event.  We hope that you’ll be a partner in celebrating and honoring moms while simultaneously supporting a great cause! Please feel free to contact me at email:  rebstuartc21@aol.com phone: 610-745-7852 or mail 3154 Surrey Lane, Aston, PA 19014.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Mucklow

Buddy's Burgers is Coming to Media!

New restaurant to open in Media, Pa
If you have been missing  hamburgers in Media since Zac's left, well, you may be in luck.  From what I understand a newcomer by the name of Buddy's Burgers will be occupying Zac's former location (State St. and Orange).  One burger joint replaced by another probably works well here due to the high traffic location and a prior setup that does a good job at accommodating the burger crowd.

Buddy's Burgers currently has two location in West Chester and Exton.  It's a family owned business and unlike Zac's, offers a more comprehensive menu that includes salads, chicken sandwiches, kids menu, fresh cut fries, handmade milkshakes and free toppings.  Based on the menu; a typical burger, fries and drink will set you back about $10 dollars.

As for a liquor license?  Don't know the details on that or if they even applied for one.  It's always a good question as many of the new restaurants that come to Media seem to come prepared to have one.

You can check out further information about Buddy's Burgers on their website and Facebook page.

Super Wawa in Media? This may have changed everything!

Wawa not done yet with Media, PA
CORRECTION: 3/8/2013 - It was brought to my attention that the decision made by the Planning commission was in regard to the propposed Super Wawa development, and not in regard for the general use of the property as I had noted.

Timing is everything and even thought that didn't quite work out for the Super Wawa proposal late last year, the old saying, "better late than never" may be just as good. At last night's Planning Commission meeting, the board voted 6 to 1 to recommend to borough council that they change the zoning of the parking lot from residential to HBO (Highway, Business, Office) and that they vacate and relocate Baker Street that the borough owns.  This was not a vote specifically for a Super Wawa, but for the property in general.

This now puts Mayor Bob McMahon and Media Borough Council it a position they least like: leadership, responsibilty and decision making.  There will be no, "We were told not to talk  about it.." (i.e Nativity School); "This is what the petition/survey says" (i.e Third Street Bridge) or even, "There was confusion on what was being voted on..." as used during last year's discussion on this lot. This will now fall directly on the shoulders of Council President, Brian Hall and Media Borough Council.  As for the Mayor, who has sat silent throughout the whole process, don't expect anything to change there.

I would like to recognize Media's Planning commission and the Media Business Authority for showing the poise and decisiveness towards this matter.  Yes, there will be challenges that will have to be dealt with in terms of traffic, but at least a conversation can now take place on what could be a potentially big opportunity for the community in terms of jobs, construction and tax revenue.

New Homes on West 4th Street

New homes on W 4th Street
The newer cluster of town-homes on the corner of 4th and Orange never quite appealed to me.  They just don't seem to fit well there among the tradition homes on that street.  Too tall!  That's the problem with some of the new homes going up in the borough; some are done very well, while other leave a bit to be desired.

Further down 4th street, I was glad to see the twin homes being built on the former Tunia property to be well proportioned for the lot.  I went to school with James Tunia and always had an interest in what was going to happen with the property.  Oddly enough the development is being done by another family I also went to school with, Martini construction.  These guys do top notch work!

Looking at the pictures the framing is well underway and sits nicely back from the curb.  I'm told that there will not be driveways directly in front of the house, which I think is a good idea for this street.

Nice job here!  Looking forward to the finished product.  No word yet on listing price.

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA, PA in TWO MINUTES - Catch up on the latest

With the month of March upon us, Spring is slowly coming into the forefront and that means day light savings time.  Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead next Sunday.

Ok, let' go!

Well Deserved Recognition and More....
In our daily lives we often overlook the recognition of those who have done some extraordinary things.  I was reminded of that last week by a resident of Media who pointed out to me a man by the name of William "Willie" Hilton who was featured in the Daily Times last week.  Willie says, "I came up the hardway" and if you read his incredible and inspiring story you'll surely understand why.

So to give Willie even more recognition, we contacted a few folks about his story who were equally impressed and further inspired to reach out to him on the county level.  Media residents doing great things for others are the best stories.

Annie, get your gun (permit at the Courthouse)
I'm not a bad shot, but I don't own any guns.   However, if you have ever been to the courthouse at 10am, you'd think everyone is signing up to get a concealed weapons permit.  Well, they actually are, as this is the county location to do just that.  I had heard it was crowded, but what I saw was a line out the door and a estimated half hour to hour wait.  Apparently this is the case every weekend.

Penncrest Hi-Q
The hits just keep coming for the remarkable Penncrest Hi-Q team.  After a first round bye for accumulating the most points during the season, the team will take on the next contenders March 12th.  This is the fourth consecutive time that Penncrest has hosted the championship.

Rose Tree Fire House - Ladies Auxiliary Event
These ladies know how to throw a party and if you're around, check out what they have in store for their St. Patty's Day party on March 16th.  I'll post the full flyer of event details next week, but save the date.

Lions come to Media's VFW
The big news here is that Media's VFW is now smoke free.   That was pleasantly welcomed when we were down there speaking with patrons and folks who were there for the Lions Club event. A lot of fun and a neat place if you've never been.  This side of the Media Veterans Museum, the VFW has one of the most interesting collection of military memorabilia around.   Thanks for the invite.
Springfield's Hotel Site

Media will recognize June as Golf Month
If you want to learn more about Golf Month, check out the great work being done by Media resident, Arthur Leahy.  He'll be putting together a multitude of events for the upcoming US Open being held in Merion.  We a healthy dose of tourism expected for Media, it would have been nice to have had a hotel.  Or even a mayor or borough council who had any idea with been going on with the property that's sat vacant for the last seven years.

I don't know if it'll be done yet, but Springfield is racing along to get their hotel completed by this summer.  I got a chance to get over there to see the work in progress.

New House on 6th Street
It's amazing how quickly they can stand a house up these days.  The one on sixth street is coming along.  Don't now price or layout specifics yet, but I'll see what I can find out for next week.

Third Street Bridge - Update:
Even thought the stipulation has been tossed, there is still plenty of interesting news swirling about the fate of Third Street Bridge.  From what I'm understanding and what I will share in due time, this town should be OUTRAGED by the latest tactics by this borough council.  It's unacceptable!  I'm not talking about the stipulation, or potential loss of funding, this is much more troubling and goes beyond just a bridge on the end of town.

Jefferson and Edgemont CONDOS
Late last year the time frame for construction on the new condos going in at Edgemont and Jefferson was expected to begin in April 2013.  They've since cleared the lot, but it looks like this may take a little longer before the work begins.

Arthur Leahy is putting Media, PA on the Map in the World of Golf.

Great people doing great things are always cherished stories here in Media, PA.  So here's one that is going to make national news this June in the world of golf.  Local resident Art Leahy has been busy preparing for the US Open tournament that will take place in Merion Township this June.  Not as a competitor on the links, but by showcasing the love that he and many others like him have for the sport.

Media resident, Arthur Leahy
With the US Open in close proximity to Media, the economic benefits will surely be felt here in terms of money spent on accommodations, restaurants, shopping and services.   In fact, Art tells me there is already interest from attendees who are looking to rent houses in this immediate area for that  weekend. Speaking of that weekend, Art is looking to have what I would say is a town fair of sorts on State Street, featuring events, seminars, games and entertainment for the whole family.

Recipients of a portion of the proceeds
But wait, there's more!  During this event Mr. Leahy will also be debuting his acclaimed screenplay, "Death on the 16th Fairway" at the Media Threatre.  This is the first of a three part trilogy about a murder mystery that takes place at a private club.  Though fictitious, many parts of the story are based loosely on Art's behind-the-scenes experience as a private golf club member and financial professional.  With a cast that includes Jim Kelly from ESPN Sports who provides audio narration, this will surely capture a lot of regional attention.

The vision, passion and enthusiasm Art has for this project is not only inspiring, but illustrates a what our town can do when community comes together.  With the Media Theatre helping out and many getting involved; June is shaping up to be a great month for Media, PA!

A portion of the proceeds raised by this event are going to Autism Speaks, Shelter Box and the USO.  Check out Art's website for more information and the latest update.
