Tedman O'Hara to Run for Mayor of Media, Pa

Media Community,

For the last four years I've developed this site as a service to the community and a point of interaction for all of us to discuss and learn about matters important to Media, PA.  Some controversial, some political, some funny, some informative, but most which have shown how great this town can be and the potential that lays ahead.  At first, no one really payed attention to this site, but I knew Media Borough has a story to tell like none other.  With 1,400 posts, thousands of comments and hundreds who drop by each day, that story is alive and as important as ever.   The countless hours, expense and sacrifice has been nothing compared to the fun and reward this site has been for me and I hope for you too.  There's been no financial compensation, it's been through pure enthusiasm I have for our town.
Leadership for the community that gets results!

Today I'd like to share with the community that I am running for Mayor of Media.  I went to school here and growing up, sat a many kitchen tables in Media with friends and family, who all have had a lasting impact on me - EVERY ONE!.  Those experiences, along with my up bringing showed me the value of hard work, integrity and sound judgement.  In both my personal and professional life, I've never let those people down and as Mayor, I won't let this town down either.

After 18 years it's time for a new Mayor who will show a commitment and spirit for this town like it hasn't seen in years, if ever.  It's time to get people involved, time to move forward together as a town and a time for straight talk and results.  Mayor McMahon I'm sure had the best interest of Media in mind, but after almost two decades, complacency and lack of attention has set in.  I'll to do a better job immediately upon being Mayor of Media.

I'll be sharing more of what my political platform in the next month, but I'm not writing this as a fancy candidate speech.  If you read this blog, you'll know where I stand on the issues.
  • Taxes and fiduciary responsibility  I am very lucky to live in this town and know how important it is for others to call this home too.  Unfortunately, there are people I know who live here that have to put their real estate taxes on credit cards due to an economy that still struggles.  It's a horrible position for these people to be in, but it's something you don't forget when you see it happening here in Media.   When I see our current mayor frivolously spend taxpayer money on infomercials with celebrities, that's a problem.  What's worse is when Mayor McMahon received a letter from me on behalf of taxpayer questioning this decision, he bluntly said to me on State Street that he had other priorities.  Folks, this is what happens when career politicians hang around for 18 years.  It's no different on the federal level and is why the system is broken.
  • Proposed Wawa: Due to a lack of a viable, real option, I believe Media has an opportunity to make this project work.  I don't expect to be elected just to say "no" to everything, I expect to be held to a standard that includes figuring problems out.  Yes, their are issues here that include traffic, but there are some great benefits too to bringing this company to Media on this scale.

Companies and even a labor union are paying close attention to the outcome here.  They want to know if Media is a place they where they can do business. When we have a local government that has a company like Wawa present 13 times in 19 months, we have a process and leadership issue. And what I now believe to be a perception problem with how this town treats businesses.
  • Third Street Bridge:  Which ever side you're on, I think we can all agree that 18 years to get what was once a fully financed bridge two years ago is an embarrassment.  It's one of the most dangerous situations in Pennsylvania! I've never had the luxury in the professional world of telling someone they needed to be patient on an outcome. That doesn't fly there, and shouldn't here.  I'm for a repaired bridge/dam and two-way traffic, though with the money to be taken off the table, it's time we all get together to make this work!
  • Media's Hotel - Economic factors played a big part with this, but I also think the owners never saw assurances that Media still wanted or supported a hotel.  In these times cooperation goes a long way towards economic development.  Springfield stepped up and made the Marriott Courtyard Hotel work in a little over a year, Media is left reading this blog and wondering what will ever happen to this project, while Middletown awaits a whole revitalization with the recent purchase of GRM.
  • Term Limits - I may be the only candidate running for office who will self impose a 2 term limit, but I believe it's the right thing to do.  In fact, I'll ask that this be done for both myself and borough council upon being elected.  I'm not trying to do this as a career and don't think others should either.  If you want to see and end to gridlock and REAL change, term limits are the first step and it'll start with me.
Lastly, I want people to know that being elected Mayor is more than just showing up to a monthly meeting and reading a 5 minute police report.   It's about giving back to the community. It's about involvement and commitment.  It's about listening and providing good communication that serves the best interest of all, not a few.

Upon being elected I will ask that any financial compensation (~$5,000 per year) I should receive for this position be given back to the community.  Whether that goes to help fund a study for a skate park,  allow more kids to sign-up for the Media Youth Center, or help fund our Media Food Bank;  I believe that's my obligations to this town and a pledge to lead by example.

I look forward to coming to your neighborhood soon to meet each and everyone of you.

Tedman O'Hara

It's the Last Sunday of The Month - Media VFW Breakfast Today 8:00 - 11:30am
I won't be cooking this month down at the Media VFW, but I will be there to support this great community event.  They'll have a crowd today, so make sure you get their early.

The Media VFW has quite a few renovations happening with construction going on for a outdoor stage.  They also have been assisted by a Home Depot program that  allowed for a totally remake of their kitchen.  Thanks to Home Depot and the volunteers who help out our Vets!  That's pretty awesome!

Happy Birthday Delaware County
There will be a big celeration for Delaware County today at Rose Tree Park starting at noon and going until 5pm.  Before that there is a 'Ride for History' tour that will start at Hannum's in Chadd's Ford and make its way to Rose Tree Park.  Along this ride they'll stop at historical Delco landmarks. Starts at 9:00am  Here's a link for more information.

Spamalot Comes to Media Theatre!
I always take time to listen to what people have to say when they come up to me on the street.  At last week's Dining Under the Stars I had two people tell me how excited they were to see Media Theatre's Production of Monty Python's Spamalot.  They didn't talk about anything else other than this play and how much they wanted people to know how good it is.

I would like to thanks Austin, Jesse and Roger from the Media Theatre for the tickets they gave me for this show.  I'll swing by and check it out!

ATM readers get involved
Thanks for the great comments and personal notes sent to ATM.  We had one reader pose a interesting question this week that I wanted to share with everyone to see if others had, or could speak to this problem.
I've noticed at least a dozen holes in my front yard this week. About the size of a golf ball or bigger. Just a couple inches deep. Haven't stuck my hand down there or the leaf blower yet. Wondering if it's a mole or squirrel or some kind of insect.

Officer Mason - Tremendous Act of Kindness
Media resident and Upper Providence Police Officer, Fred Mason made the news this week with a generous act of kindness towards a startled deer who was caught up in an accident on 252.  You can read about it on Fox 29.

Officer Mason, thanks for your service and for looking after creatures big and small!

Support Media's Food Bank
I stopped down at the Media Food Bank to see how depleted the shelves were after receiving quite a few concerns about this issue.  Paul, the manager of the Food Bank was there to give me a quick tour and to see first hand what they're up against.  It's not good.  With recent food stamp cutbacks expected later this year, the food bank is worried that this will be a more challenging year than others......it already is.

Be sure to check out the Media Food Bank FaceBook page.  I'll also post on this site what I can in terms of goods they'll take.  At this point, Paul said they'll take anything.  That also includes clothes.

Penncrest Goes 5-0!  Best record since 1964
Congratulations to the Penncrest Lions for going 5-0 and beating the Springfield Cougars last Friday Night.  I was there and saw more people than I ever had at a Penncrest Football game.  They had the blackout section where students and parents wore black and cheered every down.  With no seats available in the stands, this was a standing game only for many fans, but the excitement of the play made it go quick.

The team played "lights-out" on both offense and defense.  They have a good balance between the two and both racked up some big plays.  Next week, Penncrest is on the road and goes up against 5-0 Garnet Valley.  The Delaware Valley Bowl?  It's shaping up to be one!  Don't miss it.

A New Beginning for the Granite Run Mall
What's going on with the recent purchase of the Granite Run Mall by BET Investments is quite a big deal for a couple reasons.  1) It was purchased by a group who has the motivation and capital to really change this property around. 2) The community is interested to see this area revitalized without having the burden of a second "Franklin Mint" site developed.  3)Unlike Media, Middletown has the local officials who understand this project and who are already showing the vested interest to ensure it's success.

They community expectations are high for this project, but I believe the pieces are in place to fulfill them.
A vote to mail a letter? No wonder why nothing gets done!

Here's why noting gets done in Media,Pa

When we have a local government that can't even agree on when a letter should be mailed out, we as a community have to do better and hold people accountable.  Is it any surprise that nothing gets done in this town?

Here's an article written last week that shows just how bad things have gotten on Media Borough Council.  They had to take a vote because they couldn't agree on when a letter should be mailed to Septa!
Hall moved for authorization to send such a letter, but Councilman Paul Robinson said he thought it was premature. Robinson’s impression was that Mayor Bob McMahon may have already been in contact with the legislators on the “seriousness” of the issue.

“(Council) can move on it later. I think it is jumping the gun,” said Robinson.

Council persons Monica Simpson and Eric Stein said they believed such action was appropriate since the legislature will be in budget talks upon reconvening. The 5-1 vote, with Robinson opposed, was to forward a letter which will be signed by Hall and McMahon, but likely not include all name of council members.

Springfield Marriott Courtyard Hotel - Resort Style!

First off, thanks for the impromptu tour by the staff at the newly opened Marriott Hotel located next to the Springfield County Club.  I was in the area last week and just couldn't drive by without going in.  They were excited to showcase the place, as I was to take a tour.

This isn't your typical plain "side of the road" hotel and you'll notice that right when you walk through the entrance.  Nice decor and a great layout for family or business travelers that I found very accommodating.  It's an area where you can camp out on the counter with a laptop, of sit with a group at a private table in one of their circular areas.  For more of a causal vibe, they have a nice inside lounge that opens up to the patio overlooking the golf course.
GOBOARD

You like technology and efficiency? They got that too with a large screen display called the GoBoard.  It's a huge touch screen setup that shows the latest news, the day's menu, points of interest, restaurants, retail, weather and flight cancellations.  Yeah, that's a lot to have on a screen, but it's very intuitive and actually kind of fun to play around with.  And most important, useful!  Media businesses who are listed in Bing search are also included in this content display.

You don't hear the word resort used around this area much, as, well, we don't have any really.  You sit out side on the patio by the bar pavilion or next to one of a few fire pits and Springfield begins to feel like a trendy area in Austin, Texas or Tahoe.  Check it out to see what I'm talking about by a "resort" feel.

Last weekend the place was packed with people checking it out and people checking in for at least one wedding reception.  Last week they told me they had 50 walk-ins and it hasn't even been open a week.  Nice Job here!  They also wanted me to extend the most cordial invite to our area to come in and check out their great hotel.

Bike Reported Stolen at Corner of Edgemont and 4th Street

I received notification from a resident that they are reporting a kid's bike stolen from their front porch at the location of Edgemont and 4th Street.  The incident occurred sometime between late last night and early this morning.

Here's a picture of the stolen bike.  If you have any information, please contact the Media Police Department by dialing 911.

Media in Two Minutes

Media Two Minutes

A lot of appreciation and Thanks today, so let's get started.

Best Dinner in Town!  Thanks Campbell AME Church of Media
I hope a lot of you were able to try our last night's dinner by Campbell AME Church.  For $10, it was the best deal in town and went to a great cause.  I had the smoked chicken which was stellar.  Ribs sold out early, so I asked the great folks there if we could do this again next weekend and every weekend.  I didn't take the laughter that ensued as a confirmation, but they do a great job and I'll be back.  Thanks!

Penncrest Goes 4-0!
Penncrest Football is getting exciting!  It's the first time since 1981 that the lions have had this kind of start and it's getting a lot of attention.  Next Friday (7pm) they take on Springfield at home.

People have been asking about Penncrest Football apparel.  I know their website is a bit sparse when it comes to this stuff, but I'll see if we can get sweatshirts, hats and such.  I have a call in to get more information.

Movie Review?

I don't do movie review since it doens't fit the format for this blog and I usually can't sit still long enough to watch one.  However, I did see a movie this weekend call "Undefeated" which was one of the best I've ever seen.  Your can read more about it here and it's available on Netflix.

Sports Radio Coming to Media!
I'm very interested to see how this will be received.  Tomorrow there will be a live broadcast of a sports radio show here in Media done by locals.  I love the idea and know the host very well.  He's a very witty guy and I think even professionally trained in this format.  He recently finished as a finalist for one of the Philly sport radio contests, so he's got ability.

It'll be a Ustream live show with an option to take calls from the audience. I've asked that they cover Penncrest and some of the local teams, though they'll mostly cover Philly sports.  I'll post a link on this site for people who want to check it out.

It's not a hotel, it's more like a resort!
Yesterday I was given a tour of the brand new Courtyard Marriot Inn located next to the Springfield Country Club.  It didn't feel like a hotel, it felt like a full blown resort.  I did a whole wriite-up about it that I'll post later.  In the meantime, check out the delcotimes article.

I was surprised to have been asked by one person as to why Media never built the proposed hotel here.   I didn't provide a very concise answer, but there is a profound difference as to what happened in Media compared to Springfield.  And I think the difference comes down to this quote:
Burns cuts the ribbon today on a project that took vision, planning, tweaking and a “perfect partnership” between public government and private enterprise. It came to fruition 15 months after the initial approval by commissioners of a land lease for the township-owned property to Burns as the owner and developer. Actual construction was less than a year.
“We took about an acre of dirt that was unused and turned it into a facility that will bring the township millions. And there were no taxpayers dollars used,” Burns said. “We are all really proud of what we’ve done.”
Delcotimes.com
Media, outside this borough we have communites achieving great things, because they are involved, committed and working together.  For us, we have a borough council and mayor that can't even figure how to get a bridge fixed after 18 years.  With council members who have served multiple terms, they still can't solve this issue even when they were given the money to do it.  It's gotten so bad with this group that last Thursday had to take a vote on when a letter should be mailed out to elected officials over the Septa funding situation.

Here's the Best Dinner in Media Tonigh! Chicken and Ribs!

I've been talking to a lot of residents and businesses in Media for a big announcement I'll make soon, but during today's travels I was able to stop over at the Cambell AME Church of Media.  They are on the corner of 3rd Street and N. Olive, but I can tell you, they've brought out their "A" game for the BEST dinner in Media tonight!

The grills are hot and they are taking orders for authentic BBQ.  $10 for chicken or ribs with 2 sides(mac&cheese, string beans, sweet potatoes, potato salad, collard greens).  For a $1 more,  you get a dessert option.

Place Orders in Advance at: 610-565-1066
They'll be cooking from 12 to 4pm or when the food runs out.

Penncrest Football Wins! Goes to 4-0 record. The Best Start Since 1981

Congratulations to the Penncrest Football team who beat Lower Merion last night (48-7) making their record 4-0!  This it the best start in the school's history.  Correction: Since 1981.  Next up is Springfield at home on Friday 9/27, 7pm.

Here's a run down of what happened at last night's game provided by gametimepa.com.

Bizarre incident at last night's Media Borough Council Meeting

Nobody goes to a borough council meeting for the sheer excitement of it, but that's not to say peculiar things don't happen from time to time.  At last night's Media Borough Council meeting a resident decided he had had enough.  Displeased with what he thought was a poor investigation by the Media Police regarding the death of his cat, he decided to present a rather bizarre exhibit to support his allegation.   Claiming his cat was poisoned, he came in and sat down in the front row with the dead cat under his arm to plead his case.  Not amused, borough council eventually called for police assistance, but not before a few words were had outside by this resident and a member of borough council. I'm not sure what happened from there.

This was the same person who was arrested in May of 2012 over an argument with a Broomall Lake (BLCC) representative regarding  the Third Street Bridge.  Apparently BLCC was also accused by this resident for the demise of his cat.

3-0 Penncrest Football takes on Lower Merlon Tonight at 7pm

The 3-0 Penncrest Lions go on the road this evening to take on tonight's opponent, Lower Merion.  Kick-off is 7pm, so come out and support what is shaping up to be a run for the Central League title.

Media in Two Minutes

I'm working on quite a big announcement for Media here shortly that's taking up a lot of my time, but I just couldn't push Media in Two Minutes aside for that effort.  Okay, this will be on the short side, but bear with me.

Media Food Bank Needs HELP!
If you didn't see my piece earlier, please take a look.  Media's Food Bank is in dire need of supplies (Canned goods, etc.).  Please consider a donation to this group.

Super Sunday
Today is Super Sunday on State Street, or what the locals like to call Super Sock Sunday.  Maybe it's just me, but this event just doesn't seem to have the appeal it once did.  Perhaps it's time for something different.

Trader Joe's Shopping Cards
Sat there two weeks!
If you saw a guy all dressed up walking down State Street pushing Trader Joe shopping carts, that was me.  Yes, after two weeks of a shopping cart sitting at the corner of State and Veteran's Square, I couldn't take it anymore.  I also picked up the other cart that was turned over next to a mailbox by the courthouse.  This is the thing: it's not okay to leave your shopping carts just anywhere in Media.  It's kind of like cigarette buts, if one person sees them on the ground, they are more likely to throw one of theirs there too.

Upon return, I spoke to the manager at Trader Joe's who told me he had no idea this was a problem. I asked what the policy was for taking carts off the property, which I was told they are not suppose too leave the area, but it happens.  Anyway, the manager agreed that if they are found around town, they will send someone out to pick them up.  If you see any, call Trader Joe's at: 610-891-2752 and ask for Dave.

Media Hotel - Make an Offer
Make an Offer
Anyone who wants to try their hand at the hotel/development business, let me know.  You may have an opportunity before you to do just that here in Media.  What was hailed as a much need hotel for the borough, is essentially back to square one.

Interesting Media History I Didn't Know
1985 killing spree shooter, Sylvia Seegrist lived in Media.  Apparently she had an apartment back then on top of Media Hardware (now Quincy's).  I never new that.

Town Doesn't Want To Pay for Parking on Saturdays
Truthfully, I didn't think it was a bad idea to enforce paid parking on Saturday's, boy was I wrong.  A lot of you came out and expressed your concerns over why this is such a bad idea.  Thanks for the feed back, I get it.

I recommend people contact Borough Hall to further voice their concerns over this.

Too Many Bars and Restaurants in Media?

Recently I've started to hear complaints from residents that there are too many bar and restaurants in town.  To my surprise, I've also heard this from at least one bar/restaurant owner.  There is no doubt a saturation point when it comes to this, but have we reached this threshold?

Radnor Hunt Concourse
A special thanks for the invite to the Radnor Hunt Concourse Event  - 100 Motor Cars of Radnor Hunt.  It was an awesome day and the display of cars was one of the best I've ever seen.

Iconic Porsche 959 (Doesn't run and NA Porsche won't/can't fix it)

URGENT: Media's Food Bank Needs Community's Help!

Media Community,

I've received quite a few messages this week informing me of the dire need the Media Food Bank has for food supplies.  If you have anything in the way of canned goods you can spare, please consider donating to this cause.  So here's what I'll do:  For those who may not be able to get these supplies over the the Media Methodist Church - 350 W. State St., we will offer to come pick your items up.  Leave your a bag on your porch/mailbox/front step and sent an email to info@allthingsmediapa.com.  Someone will come out to collect as soon as they can.

Also, please check out the Media Food Bank's Facebook page.
Media's food bank is currently serving 55-65 families per week. The food bank is open every Thursday evening from 7:00pm - 8:00pm and the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 10:00am - 11:00am.

If you take the Media/Elwyn Line (R3) or Trolley 101 (Media) you'll want to read this.

In 1983 the R3 Line (Media/Elwyn) was closed for a year for needed repair on the Crum Creek Trestle.  I was too you young to care about that back then, but with a lack of budget funding, we may have an issue on our hands, as reported by the delcotimes.com.

The future of the R3 Line and 101 Trolley (runs through Media) could be in jeopardy due to needed repairs that if not done, could shut down the line.  Read about it in this week's delcotimes article.

Should Media Borough begin to charge for Saturday Parking?

An effort is underway that will to allow the borough to charge for Saturday parking on State Street. Technically, the meters stipulate payment is required Monday thru Saturday, but this has never been enforced.  Now it looks like Borough Council is about to change that.

What are your thoughts?  Should parking remain free on Saturday, especially on State Street, or should that change?

Delcotimes.com gets a website makeover - New Look and Feel

I don't know how much a Daily Times newspaper is these days, as I haven't bought one in years. Though, that's not to say I don't read it, as I do, but greatly prefer to view the county's news online.

As of today, it looks like the delcotimes.com has doubled down and feel their readers also share the same preference of online viewing.  Today they've released a much anticipated total make-over of their site.

It's a bit unfamiliar because it's new, but I like it.  Nice Job, Delcotimes!

Media Sports Hall of Fame - 50th Anniversary November, 6th 2013

I played with some, know others and am in awe of the rest!  I'm talking about the Media Area Sports Hall of Fame, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.  There are a lot of events in the Fall, but none that pique the local interest like this ceremony does.  I hear a lot of speakers whether in politics, business, leadership events and/or sports, but to hear fellow alumni induct others into this circle of honor makes for an enjoyable evening and a proud moment for everyone.

When I listened to Hall of Fame committee person and Penncrest Alumni, EJ Curran present the Sportsman of the Year Award to recipient, Fred Potts; as he did last year, I truly understood the importance of this group and the impact our local sport heroes have on the community.  Great Job!

Check out a great article in this week's Town Talk about the upcoming event.  Also take a look at their Facebook page for up to date information.

Big Home Opener For Penncrest Football on Thursday 7pm

Coach Chip Kelly may have a high powered offense and the excitement of Eagles fans, but we have a big game coming up too in this week's home opener for the Penncrest Lions. Beating the highly ranked Haverford Fords last week has Penncrest coming into this week's game 2-0.

Come on out to Louis Scott Stadium this Thursday
kickoff at 7pm.  Let's GO PENNCREST LION!

Borough Council Embarrasses Media over Wawa Proposal

After 19 months of Council President Brian Hall and Borough Council stringing along Wawa and their proposal to build a store here; you would think they would at least have the common courtesy to not waste their time.  That wasn't the case last Thursday when Brain Hall prevented open discussion on the Wawa project by people who were there to do just that.
Media: Anti-Business

During this whole process President Hall has shown confusion, lack of direction and a total disregard for a company that is not only local to the area, but would bring tax revenue, contractor fees and jobs to an area of Media that continues to be a problem for the borough.
The appearance was the 13th appearance before four separate borough entities since January 2012, according to Linn’s chronology. It has been seen by the Community Development Committee, Media Business Authority, Planning Commission and council; but it was the first submission as a preliminary plan.
“We have a healthy review process,” Hall explained. “This is the first time the application has come before this council. It is one of several rungs of the ladder.
“There will be a separate review of zoning issues,” Hall added, “and the matter of land ownership having to do with Baker Street. Council will first be considering whether the application meets the borough’s subdivision/land development ordinances.”
Delcotimes Sept 9, 2013
Media, the above comments are what bureaucracy and "Anti-Business" governing look like. Wawa has presented 13 times over the last 19 months and Brian Hall makes a comment, " We have a healthy review process"  He acts as though he's hearing this all for the first time. That's embarrassing.

Here's the the story-behind-the-story:  Brian Hall and the majority on borough council have no desire to bring a Wawa to Media.  They'll shift blame on to the applicant for leaving when they get fed up for trying to navigate an intentionally lengthy process.  Just like they've done with the Third Street Bridge and the Hotel Media has been waiting for for the last seven years.  In addition, the candidates in May's primary, who Hall campaigned for never even raised the issue of this Wawa with the community, which was also intentionally left out in order to not draw attention to a popular matter that they don't want.

An important aspect of leadership is clarity.  Media Borough at the hands of this council has neither.

I haven't been to the county fair in years, though it looks like Granite Run Mall will be hosting one this September.  The reason I bring it up is that at one time Riddle Memorial hospital had one on their grounds that was the best thing ever.  This was probably early 80's, but this was a must go to event as a kid and a great experience for my generation.   Especially playing a cash money craps game they had at one of the tents.  My first real taste of gambling.

I'm not sure who organized that fair, but I don't remember it being called the "county fair".   I believe the Riddle Hospital fair was eventually held at  Rose Tree Park.  After that I really don't know what happened to that event.

Double Decker Pizza Opens Monday
I like the food, I like the restaurant and they've been making pizza since 1976.  What more do you need to know?  Give it a try.

No More NFL Ticket in Media?
Shocked to hear this, but it has been gone now for two years.  That's right, no more NFL ticket in the Media local bars, which is a service offered by satellite tv that allows for viewing of all the NFL games on Sunday.  Plumstead was the last to carry this great Sunday tradition.  I think Jack's Tavern might have it, but I'll have to find out.

Local resident and avid Vikings fan, Wayne, brought this to my attention and bought me a beer pleading for its return.  I can't promise you'll see Ponder through a 60yrd go-route to Greg Jennings this weekend, put I'll certainly present my case to see what can be done.

Pay Parking on State Street Saturday?  Sunday?
Technically, the instructions on the State Street parking meters explain that parking must be paid for Monday - Saturday.  However, parking has never been enforced on Saturdays. Meaning, that if you didn't pay the meter on Saturday, there was no parking enforcement to give you a ticket.

Well, it appears that is going to be changed.  It looks like Media Borough Council will enforce Saturday parking, a long with a new electronic ticketing system.  Essentially, it'll be the same handheld technology that other cities use to ticket offenders.

As you can imagine, businesses are not pleased.

Go Green Drop Coming to Media

I didn't know what a Green Drop was until yesterday, but one is setting up shop in Media at the Getty station on the 300 E. Block of Baltimore Avenue.  This is essentially a charitable organization that is made up of the Military Order of the Purple Heard and Federation of the Blind. You can check out their www.gogreendrop.com

Media Businesses Displeased with MBA and Mayor McMahon
What's Going On With the MBA?
I spent most of the afternoon yesterday talking to businesses up and down State Street and on Baltimore Ave.  What I was intrigued to learn was the displeasure these businesses have with the MBA.  In fact, there were at least 20 business owners who have signed a petition asking to see the financial records, job descriptions and balance sheets of this Authority.  Other complaints included sloppy communications and disorganization. This is an entity that receives ~$75,000 from Media Borough.

Folks, when you have Media businesses questioning the operations of the Media Business Authority, who is supposedly commissioned to advocate business in Media, there is a real problem. One owner went on to tell me that Eric Stein, the borough council liaison and councilman, said that Media Borough Council doesn't care about retail.  Perhaps that is true.  Eric Stein missed 8 consecutive MBA meetings he was appointed to be liaison for.  As for the mayor, these businesses along with the Media VFW told me they haven't seen him in their places of businesss in years.

Here Comes Double Decker Pizza! Opens Monday!

A special thanks for the invite today to attend the soft opening of Media newest pizza restaurant - Double Decker Pizza.  After many months of renovations, this place was well worth the wait.  The first thing I noticed when walking in tonight was the smart and tasteful decor.  It's clean, spacious and has a second floor.  You want to watch your favorite team?  They got that covered too with a couple of TVs placed in optimal viewing areas.   Wifi, counter seating and nice table layouts that can definitely accommodate families and large parties.  This place is built and caters to a whole dining experience, which I think will do well in Media.

It was only until tonight did I truly understand and experience a fried pizza.  Never heard of one before.  Look, I'm not a pizza guy so I'm way out of my league on what makes a good pizza, but these guys have been doing this since 1976, so this all didn't just happen by luck, and it didn't.  A fried pizza came out along with a baked one.  What immediately jumped out at me was how fresh the ingredients were.  The one I had was excellent.  For not liking pizza in general, I ate the whole thing!

Give this place a try.  It opens officially on Monday and has a vast menu, which even includes Nutella crepes.  It's located on the E. 400 block of Baltimore Avenue.  No word on whether they will have a liquor license, but is has plenty of parking and is easy to get in and out of.

Welcome to Media,  Double Decker Pizza.

Preparations Underway for Media's Great Garage Sale 2013

The borough is lively this morning with many shoppers arriving to take part in Media's Great Garage Sale.  The official start is 9am, but as anyone knows, the best stuff goes quickly and that means being first in line.

Spinning through town, there are quite a few tables up with a wide array of items.   C'mon out, there's something here for everyone.

Missing Pet Alert!

Over the last 36hrs there have been postings throughout town for a missing cat (Reuben).  Reuben was last seen in the N. Monroe area.  If you have any information, please call the number below.

Media's Great Garage Sale This Weekend - Sept 7-8 2013

Get ready for Media's Great Garage Sale throughout the borough this weekend.  Starting at 9am and going to 4pm, this is a town tradition that's in its 27th year.  And as always, the goal for sellers is to bring back less to your garage or basement, than what you brought out.  Good Luck with that!

Historically, early birds start showing up around 7am to peruse the best deals, but this is an all day steady event.  With weather showing to be favorable, this may get a good turnout.  Parking will prove to be a lesson in patience, but that's to be expected.

For one ambitious group, they started their garage sale early and where seen down on S. Orange St. today with quite a display.  Others have invested in the classic telephone pole postings.  Here are a few.

Media in Two Minutes - Happy Labor Day 2013!

Media in Two Minutes!
Happy Labor Day Weekend 2013

It would be easy to say it's Labor Day and take the this weekend off, but what fun would that be. Sit back, drink you coffee - It's Media in Two Minutes

Congrats to Penncrest Football.  No Media Bowl This Year?
Friday night Penncrest went on to win their season opener against Upper Merion 20-0. Next week (9/6) Penncrest is on the road again to play Haverford at 6pm.

Someone made a comment about this, but I had to check for myself - No Media Bowl this Year!  That's right, Penncrest and Strath Haven will not face off this season for the coveted bragging rights of Media.  How could that be?  This rivalry was once called the Burger King Bowl, as both teams would dine at the old Media Burger King the night before Saturday games.  The old Burger King was located where the vacant bank building is on Providence Road and Baltimore Ave.

Rose Tree Colts March On for Opening Day!
This weekend was also the opening day for the Rose Tree Colts.  And WOW, did they come in with a bang.  Check out the short video of the opening day parade and the Colts entering Hampton Field.  Nice job here all around by the coaches, players, cheerleaders and families!

Lukoil in Media Closes
I didn't use this gas station and found it was much easier to enter coming into Media than leaving, but Lukoil is officially closed.  No word of why it closed or what might possibly go here in the future, but with a pending decision on a proposed Wawa across the street, this might get interesting.

Media Unity Day 2013
I'll tell you what, Media Unity Day down at Sapovits Park was quite a big deal.  I was down there early to see them setting up and it looked like they were expecting a lot of people. Music, perfromances, food and good community fun.  What could be better on Labor Day Weekend?

Friends of Houtman Park
Friends of Houtman Park
I haven't had a chance to get down and meet this group, but maybe you can. Friends of Houtman Park are up and running on Facebook and are eager to share the plans being made for the park's 2013 renovation project.

Check it out! Houtman Park is located on the south side of Media off of W. Lincoln Street

Panera Bread, DUTS and Media's Food Bank
No matter how big or small, I always try to recognize the businesses that look out for Media and the community.  Hat's off to Panera Bread in Bromall for donating breads and pastries to Media's VFW and others.  I know how good their stuff is and how much it costs, so it's quite impressive to see what they routinely donate to the community.  Thank you!

Speaking of donations, Media's Food Bank is struggling with keeping up with demand. Sadly, this service appears to be increasing in popularity and that requires steady contributions.  This wasn't my idea, but a good one:  With the efforts and success made with DUTS, could restaurants consider contributions towards the food bank with any left overs they have? Perhaps they do already.  Would US Foods consider a donation with the bulk orders made for this event?

B-25s and Avengers - You don't see this everyday.
There's something about getting into a 70 year old airplane that really just doesn't do if for me.  Doesn't something come loose after all those years?  Especially one sitting on a runway warming up while sounding as though a couple cylinders are missing.  However, to see these planes actually working and prepare for flight is fascinating.

Here's a video of last weekend's air show out at New Garden airport in Chester County.

Dinner now served out House!
With brunch, lunch and now dinner, you can really spend your whole day at House. Speaking of which, does House provide take-out?  I think there might be a market for that.
