Media’s Restaurant Scene is a Changin’

I won’t go into detail, but expect some announcements in the coming months regarding Media’s restaurant scene.  One restaurant appears to be making moves to pack up and leave State Street. And as unfortunate as that is, there's already interested in this expected vacancy by an owner of a well liked restaurant in town.

In addition, a second restauranteur is interested in opening a another place in the borough. From what I understand, the concept of this place is pretty cool.

If this has your interest and you want to get in on the game, there is yet a third restaurant who is shopping around for a buyer.

Is Media becoming over saturated with restaurants?  I don't know the business to say if there is or isn't, but there is quite a lot of action going on for location and expansion.

Lastly, Traders Joe’s will have to make a decision probably this year as to their plans to stay at the armory and renew their upcoming lease or move to another location.  It’s no secret that there are a few people standing on the sidelines waiting for that outcome.

You'll Breathe Easier Reading This. Nice Job, RTMSD!

As reported at a recent meeting this month, RTMSD school buses drive a total of about 1,000,000 miles in a typical year.  Forget how many times that is around the world - it’s a lot!  I recently took a look at the school district's newly proposed effort to convert most of their bus fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG).  There are quite a few companies making this transition in the commercial space, Aqua being one; but I was interested to see if it passes the smell test, so to speak.  For the record, I still find electric cars impractical and gimmicky, but CNG may pay dividends much sooner than later.  A couple of  which are the environmental impact, along with a projected lower costs due to the abundant supply we have of NG in Pennsylvania.

I couldn’t mention CNG without addressing the safety issues, which were also covered in the presentation.  Sure enough, CNG is just as safe as gasoline/diesel buses and maybe even a little better in this category. Check out the presentation and see what it’s all about.

Lastly, kudos to RTMSD Superintendent, Jim Wigo and the school board for taking initiatives like these to improve our award wining schools!

Media PA was Scammed and Here's How it Happened

Today I want to illustrate a point I've been trying to make for the last year and it involves a video done by Mayor McMahon that cost taxpayers $20,000.  I'll keep it short and the math easy, but the people of Media need to understand how badly they've been mislead.

With no fancy celebrities, national tv distribution, or so-called production quality direction, I was able to create two Youtube videos last week about driving conditions in Media that combined had over 700 views in the first 24hrs. You may have seen them in prior posts.  In addition, someone sent me a video they did about Media during a snow storm and in one week it had over 2,500 views.

The cost of my production was about $300 dollars for equipment and 3 hours of my time. Truthfully, it was fun and drew over 1000 views if you count the third video I did on Facebook.  Not a big deal by any means, but in contrast to Mayor Bob McMahon's $20,000 video, it's astounding.

With a voice over and appearance by Terry Bradshaw from a production company that claims to have national distribution outlets; the Media Business Authority, along with Mayor McMahon spent $20,000 with this Florida company (not even produced locally) to make a 5 minute video.  This same company was fined by the Florida Attorney General for fraud, but when that was made known, Mayor McMahon and Democratic Council President, Hall continued anyway.

What eventually transpired was a video that took most of a year to create and an apparent showing on a tv series called "Today in America."  I never saw it on on air despite being assured that I would. However, this video was also uploaded to Youtube in May 2013 and currently has only mustered a grand total of 2,317 views!

So here's the totality:  McMahon and the MBA spends $20,000 in taxpayer money for a 5 minute video that gets 2,317 Youtube views in six months, I spend $300 for three, two minutes videos and get over a 1,000 views in 24hs.  A resident in Media, not sure what he paid to make his, gets 2,500 views in one week

This $20,000 video was such a disaster it's already been abandoned as a promotional tool on the Media Borough website.  It's not even shown on the main page.

Where's the accountability?!?

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES

A little late with today's Media in Two Minutes, but I've been traveling in the coal region of Pennsylvania and mountains around Lake Wallenpaupack.  Nice area up there and always enjoy the coal stove.  The competitive ice skating, not so much.
Let's Go! I just want to thank everyone who swung by and took a look at the videos of last week's snow storm.  We have a BLAST doing these!  They'll continue and are a part of something larger that's called project "ATM-S." You may have seen the teaser video I release last week, which touched upon what's to come.  I won't get into many details just yet, but this will be something that I hope to have ready in May-June of this year.  What I can tell you is that it's taking a lot or research, development and testing, which means it won't be cheap, but I'm quite sure it'll be worth it and enjoyed by everyone.

ATM SPOTLIGHT - Local Media Resident, Pat Fahy
I have yet to meet Pat Fahy, but he contacted me on Wednesday evening and wrote, "I've made a video of the storm yesterday."  Truthfully, a lot of people send me a lot of things.  I don't post it all, but I always reply to those that reach out.  I no sooner saw Pat's video and KNEW it would be a smash hit.  Turns out it was and pretty much went viral for a town like Media.  As of today, it has 2,185 views and I'm sure it still has a way to go.  Nice Job, Pat!  Everyone loved it.

The Passing of Well Liked Local, Doc!
A friend reached out to me this week asking if I could recognize the passing of a man
A Tribute to Doc
named "Doc" who was a well known patron at the Boat House in Upper Providence.  I didn't personally know Doc, but he sure had a lot of people who liked and will miss him.  RIP, Doc!

Penncrest Basketball Fundraiser Dinner at Country Deli
Seriously, if you haven't signed up for this, you may just miss out one of the most popular events around.   Friends don't let friends NOT go to this event.  Check'em out on Facebook for all the important details.  GO LIONS!

Wallet Stolen from Trader Joe's
It seems the wallet stolen from a woman at Trader Joe's today was done by a group that knew what they were doing.  You can read the story here.

Adopt a Fire Hydrant
Sadly, or maybe fortunately, I don't know where the closest fire hydrant is to my house.  However, we all should and when it comes to winter weather, it's important they are visible.  Middletown FD mentioned this this week, so I'll lead by example:  ATM will adopt a fire hydrant and make sure it's throughly cleared and visible this winter.  We'll put a picture up to prove it.

If you want to join the fun, adopt a fire hydrant, clear the snow around it and post a picture of in on this Facebook page.  First person to send one in gets a $20 gift certificate to Fast and Fancy.

Third Street Bridge - People are Fed UP!
Kudos to Cindy Miller for stepping up and writing a letter to the delcotimes.com on the non-sense that is the continued closure of the Third Street Bridge.  People are fed up with the inaction of this borough council, the conflict of interests and wasted taxpayer's money in costly delays and legal fees.

Councilman Kent Davidson Found Breaking Media Ordinance, AGAIN!

...and also adhering to borough ordinances!
Media Democrat Councilman, Kent Davidson must think it's okay to not shovel his walkways, as yet again, they remain snow covered.  Nothing worse than a public servant setting a bad example, but then again, that's what we've come to expect from this council.

Remove the snow from you walkways, Council Davidson as you put on the Media Borough website directing us to remove ours!

Media's Got Talent! Check out this professionally produced video of "Winter in Media, PA"

Local resident, Pat Fahy produces an incredible video capturing a snow day in Media.  Check out "Winter in Media, PA"  Great job, Pat!

Road Conditions this Morning in Media, PA

Despite it being 4 degrees as of 8am EST, PennDot did a pretty good job of cleaning up the main roads.  Here's HD video of streets in and around Media, PA

Video (HD) Updates on Road Conditions as of 3pm and other interesting information

#delcosnow #mediapa #pawx

Snow continues to fall as the temperature is now at 19 degrees (3:53pm EST).  Here's video of a few roads leading in and out Media.  We'll continue to provide more video updates tonight, and expect to tomorrow am before the rush-hour commute.

For those who have left comments, we'll try to get to your streets too.  (Monroe, E. State Street).  During these conditions, most people get cabin fever about now.  John's Bar and Grille is open during the worst of storms and they have wifi.  For other recommendations, Plumstead Inn and Sligo are good options.  They are usually open on snowdays too.

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES

Media in Two Minutes

It is with much sorrow to have learned of the passing of long time resident, Bill Gross. Media is a better place because of his generosity and the tireless desire he took to make this town a community.  My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Gross family.

Tedman
I'll be posting information about today's and upcoming funeral services this week.

ATM SPOTLIGHT: Media Resident Writing Book:
Media residents doing great things always makes writing this segment easy. This Spring one well known resident, Art Leahey will be releasing a book on a personal story of life in the military while stationed on an island in Alaska called, "Don't Finish Third."  I got an advanced copy and can honestly say it's a pretty neat story from what I've read so far.    Nice Job, Art!

Spring Sign-ups: Baseball, Rugby and Lacrosse
If your kids are into sports, then they have some great activities to choose from.  This month we have registrations for Baseball, Rugby and Lacrosse. Here are the links for more info:
Closure of Orange Street Causing Problems
With the Orange Street bridge spanning the Media by-pass closed for repair this month, people have really taken notice.  I've received a few complaints about this and the traffic back-ups that are becoming a daily occurrence on Rose Tree and Providence Roads.  This goes to show how important the usability of these roads around Media are and how badly commuters need the Third Street Bridge and Gradyville roads opened.

The Daily Times jumped on this story too.  Thanks to Upper Providence Council Chair, Joe Solomon for taking this problem head-on and providing updates.

Media Restaurant Week
I don't think I'd want to be called a "foodie" but if that's what you're into, then you may want to pay close attention to the proposed Media Restaurant Week coming in February.  This is a new attempt by the borough as a continued effort to boost economic activity for local businesses and restaurants.  It's been a successful concept for many towns in the area and Philadelphia. I would expect further updates in the coming week.

Girl Scout Cookie Season
Just so that you know, I hold the 5th largest position in the world of Thin Mint cookies.  That’s not to say I won't expand on that, but I’m well aware it’s cookie season here in the borough.  I do a lot of these deals at the Acme in Middletown, if you wondering how I became so prominent in thin mint empire.  Other hot-spots I've seen are out front of Trader Joe's and the liquor store on Balt. Ave. Good Luck with the sales, young ladies.

Media’s Best Documentary
If you missed this gem earlier in the week, here it is again.  I’ll tell you what, this is one of the best video’s I’ve seen about the Media Youth Center or Media in general.  Kudos to whoever produced this, as it’s been well received throughout the community.

Help our Police and Fire Departments find you in an Emergency!
I've knocked on a lot of front doors in Media, and I can tell you many are not clearly numbered. Here's a standard request and example from Fire and Police Depts.
All properties shall have approved address numbers placed in the front and, for properties with alleys, the rear of the property. The numbers should be positioned so they are plainly legible and visible from the street or alley. These numbers shall also contrast with their background. Address numbers shall be Arabic numeral and alphabet letters. Numbers shall be a minimum of 4 inches high with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inches.

Manuary Does it Like This!
A gracious "Thanks" for the annual invite to this year's Manuary event held at Louis Scott Field  this Saturday, but I was unable to attend.  For those wondering what this thing is, and I'm still trying to figure that out myself; well, it's a sporting event of sorts that's held by a dedicated group of Penncrest Alumni. Below is a very well produced video of vintage footage of the gathering.

Third Street Bridge
I expect some news to come out shortly regarding the Third Street Bridge.  I wouldn't be surprised if a decision is made to build it wide enough for a two way road, but in the meantime use it as a one-way.  Stay tuned.

Okay, enough reading ATM.
Go Out and Make Something Happen!

Frustrated with the road work on Rt. 252 and the Closure of Orange St? Here are updates from Upper Prov. Councilman Joe Solomon

Why hasn't Media opened Third Street?
I've been contacted daily this week from people looking for updates on the work currently being done on Rt. 252.  Believe me, I've also heard a fair share of complaints about the Orange Street closure, newly discovered tank-trap potholes and the frustrations over lack of access in and around Media (i.e. Third Street Bridge).

Since I typically don't take these roads, I've been a bit insulated from the many head-aches, but Upper Providence Council President, Joe Solomon can help.  He's got a great site with lively commentary and Rt. 252 improvement updates.

Significant Repair Needed for Olive Street Garage.

During last night's borough council meeting it was announced that the Olive Street Garage will need significant repair.  Bids have not yet been received, but this evening's discussion did revolve around the length of time needed for the repair and a potential start date.   How this project is handled will come down to one of two scenarios:  1) the work could be done all at once taking up to at least a month and requiring all levels be closed, or 2) different levels would be done at different times lessening the traffic impact, but lenthing the time of completion.  At this time, a start date is expected to be in the June/July 2014 timeframe.
Where are Media's Priorities?

A decision will be forthcoming on what scenario will be followed.   However, a spokesperson for the retail businesses of Media suggested a quicker approach would be more desirable, than a longer, staggered approach.

Over the last two years I wrote many articles on the neglect of this structure. In fact, it wasn't until this video below did the Media democratic borough council take the situation seriously.  Why has it taken years for Media borough to begin this?

The Delaware County Republican Party Endorses Tom McGarrigle for PA Senate Seat (26th)

Tom McGarrigle
SPRINGFIELD, PA – The Delaware County Republican Party today announced that it has endorsed Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle, as the Republican candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate in the 26th District, which includes Media, portions of Delaware and Chester Counties.

McGarrigle cites education, job creation, fiscal responsibility as top priorities.

About Tom McGarrigle
Tom McGarrigle has resided in Delaware County for more than 30 years. Tom started his own automotive repair business at the age of 21 in a small rented garage in Sharon Hill. Through hard work and a strong business sense, Tom was able to purchase his own, larger shop in Collingdale after just three years. Now located in Springfield Township, Tom’s business sponsors a range of community activities and events.

Tom has a long record of public service and a history of working to improve the quality of life for Delaware County residents. In 2003, he was elected Springfield Township Commissioner representing the 5th Ward. As a member of the Board of Commissioners where he had a record of fiscal discipline while maintaining a high standard of service for Springfield Township residents. As a member of Delaware County Council since 2007, McGarrigle has served as a voice of small business owners and average citizens. Tom has also been an outspoken advocate of the law enforcement community and a leader on environmental issues.Tom is a dedicated member of the community and has donated his time to a number of community and youth organizations. Tom and his wife Michele have three sons — Thomas Jr., Patrick, and Daniel — and reside in Springfield Township.

Restaurant Week Coming to Media? Scheduled for Last Week of February 2014

Media to host a Restaurant Week
There are plans in the works to bring a restaurant event to Media, PA. Essentially, it'll be known as Media's "Restaurant Week." If you're familiar with the concept, you'll know Philadelphia has one which is coming up this month.  I don't expect Media's to charge Philly prices and be as expensive as 3 course for $30-$35, but it's expected to be modeled after that format.

Media's event is looking to be schedule for the last week of February, from Sunday to Friday. Saturday will not be included in the lineup.  The idea came about to give an economic "bump" to an otherwise slow time of the season.

How does this work in other towns? Here's an example of a "restaurant week" that is held on the Main Line, which is scheduled for this spring.  They also have their own Facebook page, too.

If You Cherish The History Of Media, You'll Love This Documentary On the Media Youth Center

This is the best documentary I've seen about Media, PA.   Here's a well done video by Ed Powell on the Media Youth Center and how big a part it has and continues to be for the community.

What Sells in Media? A Memorable Experience

The product or service you purchase and the price paid for it definitely makes a difference, but I find the authenticity of the experience  to be just as important.  Last weekend my barber was away, so I swung over to see if Robertson's Barber shop could fit me in.  It was a rainy Saturday,  but I’ve been to this shop before and knew the wait couldn’t be too long.  Upon entering, Mark told me he had a few people before me,  but asked if I could wait.  Not being in any rush, I looked around and said, “sure, by the way, I like what your doing with the place.”
Robertson's Barber Shop on N. Olive St.

If you haven’t been to this barber shop, you may want to give it a try.  Even though I waited for probably 30 minutes, I honestly enjoyed hanging out in what is more like a lounge, than a place were you would get your haircut – That’s cool!  Nice retro sofas, great music and a lively discussion among all those who walked in.  It almost felt like a social club of sorts and had it had drinks and cigars, I may have stayed the whole afternoon.  I liked the vibe of the place and thought the experience really made this business stand out and memorable.

Another business in Media that also gets this authenticity is Bryn Mawr Running Company on State Street.  I don't buy running shoes every year, but when I do, it’s from this company.  They have a nice layout, great products and knowledgeable staff whose expertise has really helped me out with running.  In fact, sometimes I just go in there for inspiration because that’s what the place projects.

Advertising for small businesses is important, but word or mouth and an unique authenticity is incredibly valuable.

Media in Two Minutes - Happy New Year 2014

Media in Two Minutes

If politics has kept a bridge closed for 4 days in Northern New Jersey, then what are people to think about politics keeping our bridge closed for 18 years?  The joke's on us, which provided a lot of laughs around town this week.  What's not funny is a borough council caught stacking committees, a councilman providing an undisclosed website and calling a school board to prevent the bridge from opening.
Tedman

ATM SPOTLIGHT - Former Councilwomen Dawn Roe and Monika Rehoric
With the recent retirement of these two courageous women from borough council, Media's governing body loses character, integrity and judgement that will tragically not be replaced.  As elected democrats, they truly understood the values of this town and worked unselfishly for the last four years in the best interests of everybody.  Despite being persecuted and vilified by their own Media Democratic Party, they punched above their weight and legislated independently of political agendas. That takes guts and commitment. Thank you both for your service!

An Event Worth Checking Out - Rose Tree Inn Tour de France Wine Dinner
Chateaubriand ala Bernaise? Bordeaux and Burgundy?  Say no more and check out the wine dinner they have going on at Rose Tree Inn on Jan. 17 It's nice that they have these types of events.  I'd definitely consider going.

Media Makes International News!
A few people contacted my about this, but I didn't get time to post it.  Last week the news media picked up a story about a mystery specific to Media's past.  A thriller spy story in Media?  That's about right, as this town was the scene of a major breakin back in 1971 of a FBI office that was located Veteran's Square.  For the longest time, no one knew who did it until now.  Check it out, if you haven't.

The sunset of Media's solar initiative?
The only time I hear about solar power in Media anymore is when someone will tells me a certain building's solar panels were offline for weeks because no one checked on them.  That was the case I heard about the library.  As for any other news on Media's solar, there isn't any, which is a shame since Media was a leader on this effort started by former council president, Pete Alyankian

It's been so long people probably don't even remember the electric car charging station that was installed behind the firehouse.  However, there sure were a lot of politicians like Mayor McMahon
standing in front of it for a picture when it opened, but where are they now?  I caught up with a group this week who at least has a plan to utilize their charger and has had some success with actively marketing it.

Bevan's Candy for Valentines Day!
Made in Media - Bevan's Candy
No better place for Valentines Day candy than Bevans! I'll never get tired of letting people know Media still produces the best candies in the world.

Who has the Best Dessert in Town?
Pizza, wings, burgers and beer all have their awards from various restaurants in town, but who has the best dessert?  I've sort of been out of the dessert busines, though I've always been found of Iron Hill's apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.  Simple, easy and I always order it.  If I had to pick a winner, it would have to be the Nutella crepes at either La Bella Epoque or Picasso's.  I've changed a lot of opinions on that treat.

Update on GRM Project
Things are moving a long with the future plans for the Granite Run Mall.  From a discussion I had, it looks like they are looking to present two, 200 unit apartment buildings.  One is to go where the theatre currently is, while the other is expected to be where the old Chi-Chi's was (overgrown lot next to Acme by Rt. 352)  These will be multi-levels with an interesting twist; garages will be placed on the mid-level or each building.

Traffic Light coming to Providence and Palmers Mill Road
I was looking at the traffic plans that are currently underway in Upper Providence.  I didn't know this, but these plans call for a traffic signal to be placed at Providence Rd. and Palmers Mill Road.  I suppose that'll happen sometime in 2014, but good to know.   You can view the layout of what's to come with this project here.

PUBLICSTUFF-ED
A more respected leader than what Media has
Too much credit is given in this town for starting things, and not nearly enough for follow-through and completion.  If you're going to be a mayor or councilperson, make the commitment to see it through.  ALL THE WAY THROUGH.  The almost non-existent attemp to launch a community service app (Public Stuff) by Media Borough Council is an embarrassment!  Who really knew about this service until I mentioned it this week?  Did people just happen to magically find information on media's website when it wasn't even on the front page?

This lack of execution and completion are typical of people who only have their own agendas and could care less about doing their jobs.  I suppose you really do have to sue Media Borough Council to get anything done.

With all the banks in Media, which one would you recommend? That's easy, convenience!

With all the banks in Media, which one would you recommend?  That's a question I got recently which I replied, "which ever one is the most convenient."   And "convenient" for me means which ever one has the best online banking experience.

I use four banks, but rarely, if ever do I have to visit them.  It’s not that I don’t do a lot of banking, but the banking I do is nearly 99% done online.  That may not work for some people, but you smartphone and computer are quickly becoming their own bank branch with 24/7 service.  Yeah, I know interest rates are still important, as is the confidence one has in the institution holding their money, but in today’s world, simplicity and convenience are tough to beat.  The traditional convenience of what was once extended hours at a branch, ironically are not that convenient compared to 24hrs and a computer.

After much research I found that PNC has a very good online banking and mobile setup.  I especially like what they do with their “Virtual Wallet” product and the ease it which it can be used.  You can tell they’ve put some time into this and understand the importance of this type of banking.  It’s also nice that they have two branches in Media in case they are needed.

I also really like Bryn Mawr Trust, as I use to work there a long time ago when it was First Keystone.  Other banks try to be community oriented, but Bryn Mawr Trust really does a great job with this.  The only criticism I have, is that their online banking is almost unusable.

I’ll also give credit to the newly opened new Republic Bank located on the corner of Baltimore Ave and Providence Road.  I've not tried any of their services, but this group is VERY generous to the community.  That may not be a big factor in choosing a bank, but goodwill towards the community is always appreciated.

The way you consume online content is about to get expensive, especially locally

$10 per month to view delcotimes.com
This week the Daily Times website (delcotimes.com) quietly began a pay-per-view subscription rate that will now be required to view their content.   While on their site today, a pop-up displayed stating that I had four more free articles I could view before I needed to pay for a subscription.   The message stated that the first month would be $0.99 and would automatically renew each month at the going rate of $10.  For a guy who hasn’t bought a hardcopy of this paper in years, I’d have to say the new $10 monthly fee doesn’t provide much value for me.  I like the Daily Times and think Phil Heron does a great job, but I’ll most likely move over to philly.com who I’ve noticed has begun to cover similar stories.  Philly.com is still free and I like the layout, so it’ll satisfy the national, regional and some county news.  I have paid for the monthly news subscriptions and and still do for the Wall Street Journal, but there is plenty of news sources out there if you look for them.  BusinessInsider.com is a site I visit often.

What will this mean for the local news reporting that the Daily Times was known for?  I suppose that’s a wait and see, but moving into a pay model is a big gamble.  Either way, this could be an interesting opportunity for Media Patch, but Patch/AOL are also challenged with revenue sustainability, as no one can seem to make money on the hyperlocal news reporting model based on advertising.  Case in point:
A former Patch sales rep who asked to remain anonymous described the futility of trying to sell ads to local businesses that aren’t the savviest marketers in the world. “It was a total waste,” he said of his nine months at Patch. “Most of these local businesses don’t have budgets for advertising at all.” Advertising on Patch, he said, was often unnecessary for local businesses anyway because so many had built their customer bases through word-of-mouth advertising, not banner ads.
When they were actually able to make a sale, the rep explained that he and his co-workers often felt guilty. The businesses had tiny budgets, he said, sometimes only a few hundred dollars, and put their faith in Patch for a good return. “Eventually, you do have to call them back and explain the reports to them,” the rep said. “The click-through rates on our banner ads were terrible .You might spend a few hundred dollars on a banner ad and only get five clicks on it.” Renewal rates, he said, were miniscule as a result.http://digiday.com/publishers/the-false-hope-of-hyperlocal/

As for ATMpa, there will be some good changes happening here too, but it'll still represent the community and remain FREE of charge.

Media Borough Council - Public Stuff, Made Not So Public

If you’re one of the seven people that watch the monthly televised Media Borough Council meetings, or one of the fewer that attend in person, you may have seen a new service launched by Media Borough called Public Stuff.  Even if you have heard of Public Stuff, you were probably not well informed, like most of us, on what it does and how it could help with a host of day-to-day issues (pot-holes, graffiti, street lights, etc) that can occur in any town.  Same thing happened when credit card readers were integrated into the parking meters.  They just showed up one day with many having questions on how they operate.

Basically, the concept of Public Stuff is to allow residents and businesses an easy way to report major and minor nuisances via a website or by using a custom mobile app on your smartphone. For those who still like to call these problem into the borough, you can still do it that way or through email.  For those who’d like to give this service a try, you can download the app for your smartphone here.

If Media borough council can't convey and share with the community something as simple as instructions on a new service, then what's the point.  They could have easily had a comprehensive write-up w/video on their site but they don't even know how to effectively use that....even after spending over $10,000 to upgrade it.

The "New" Rose Tree Inn - A Great Place to Re-visit

A few months back the Rose Tree Inn quietly came under new ownership.  You may have seen the new logo out front or maybe heard the news from around town.  Either way, I wanted to give this place high marks for an event I had there recently. I liked it before, but really like it now.

The food was great, service exceptional and the price very reasonable for a party of about 20 people. With a private room and fireplace, even the guest were quite impressed with the setup.  If you're looking to host a private party with 15, 20 or more guests, this is a tremendous value that's easy to get to and has plenty of parking.  They also have a special banquet menu that I highly recommend.

Thanks to the staff at Rose Tree Inn!

Also, well known and well liked local bartender Lauren Ashenfelter Dinger will be working there for the day shift.

Cold Weather - Why Kerosene is Mightier than Media's Power Grid

There's no smartphone app for kerosene, but it works
Hi Tech is all the rage these days with home automation solutions becoming the norm in many households.  I’m probably guilty of being an early adopter of this kind of technology, but it’s essentially what I do for a living so I can justify it in some respect.  And besides, I like it.   Heating, lighting, smoke alarms and other home controls can all be monitored and run from my smartphone. Heck, I even have lights in my living room change color to let me know it’s about to rain or snow outside….and that’s just the beginning of what can be done with these things.  Wait till you see what can be done with cars!

One vulnerability to all this technology, whether useful or useless, is the fact that once the electricity goes out, Hi Tech solutions aren't worth a tempie photo on Facebook (tempie is a selfie, but a pic of your thermometer and not of yourself.)  If you live in Media, you’ll know that when the wind speed rises above 20mph, there’s a good chance the power will go out for some duration.  With temperatures near zero last night and strong gusts almost all night long, I’m was actually surprised I didn’t wake up to a loss of electricity, as I have before.  But if I did, I was going to implement my “low tech” plan that hasn’t failed yet – Kerosene!

Call me retro, call me backwards or even call me cheap, but I still use kerosene heaters to heat a few rooms in my house.  At times it’s a chore and can smell a bit, but it’s very reliable and cost effective.  I don’t think there are many kerosene users out there, but if you’re looking for it, the closest place I know is Liberty gas station in Boothwyn off of Rt. 322.  10 gals. is about $42  Don’t use the dyed(red) kerosene you can get almost anywhere, It’ll cause problems.

With no electricity, Hi Tech isn’t cool, it’s flat out cold!

The Aftermath of NYE on State Street - Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014!

After last night's New Year Eve's festivities, State Street may be looking better than how your head may feel this morning, but I'm sure both will improve throughout the day.  Overall things didn't look too bad in downtown Media, but you can tell there was one heck of a party.  The debris mostly included confetti, paper horns, plastic cups and a few bottles.  Nice job with the green recycling barrels, as they were put to good use.

Media's Highway Department does a great job at cleaning this up.  In fact, it may be spotless by the time you make your way in to town this morning.
