Williamson Trade School, Boy Scouts Team Up for Career and Skill Opportunities

Media, Pa. – The Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America held their inaugural Merit Badge College at Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Media, this past Saturday. The day-long event offered 280 Scouts the opportunity to begin work on four merit badges. Many will complete their badges on the second day of the event on March 15. The Scouts chose from 42 merit badges, many related to STEM topics, including computers, robotics, engineering, and chess. The Scouts came from Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties.

The badges were taught by Scouting volunteers, each of whom had a background in their topic.  One of these counselors was John Rex (7W5), of Drexel Hill, who studied Power Plant Technology at Williamson, instructed the Energy Merit Badge for the Scouts.  “Williamson is a great organization, and I think it’s only right for me to pass on the knowledge to these Scouts that I learned here,” Rex said. (picture)

Steve Kelly, Williamson Trustee and Cradle of Liberty Council Board Vice President, brought the event to Williamson. He said the plans had been underway for a while, and when it came time to select a location Williamson was a good choice and a natural fit, he said.

Williamson President Michael Rounds was on hand to tell the Scouts about Williamson’s mission and to interact with participants. Also on hand were Matt Sharkus 1W5 and Phil Vecchiolli 1W6, both Eagle Scouts, who escorted Scouts to their classrooms and helped out wherever needed.  (picture)

About Williamson:
The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades is one of the last of its kind in the nation, a private, post secondary, residential institution of higher education that charges no tuition, room or board. It offers specialized technology degree programs with emphasis on carpentry, masonry, horticulture, landscaping and turf management, machine tool, paint and coatings, and power plant. There are two diploma programs in carpentry and masonry, as well. The school has a national reputation for producing sought-after craftsmen. For more information on the school, visit
www.williamson.edu
About COLBSA:
The Cradle of Liberty Council Boy Scouts of America (COLBSA) serves Philadelphia, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties, providing programs for nearly 17,000 youth in over 500 units. In the City of Philadelphia, the Council serves nearly 5,000 youth through its traditional and outreach programs. Additionally, through the Exploring program, young men and women are provided with internships and exposed to work based opportunities to help them better prepare for college and become a successful member of the work force. For more information visit:
www.colbsa.org or to join scouting programs in your area visit www.beascout.org.

About the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Program:
The Boy Scouts of America offer more than 130 different merit badges for Scouts to complete, including 35 on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related topics.  There is more to merit badges  than an introduction to lifetime hobbies, or the inspiration to pursue a career—though these invaluable results occur regularly. The process provides several learning experiences. It gives a Scout the confidence achieved through overcoming obstacles. Social skills improve. Self-reliance develops. Examples are set and followed. And fields of study and interest are explored beyond the limits of the school classroom.

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES!
Good morning and thanks for swinging by for the latest on what's going on in Media, PA.  I'll make this short this week as the 55 degrees we expect today should provide more inspiration than I can provide on this site. And that's a great thing!

A few things:
  • I'm not getting into the whole snow removal situation that has been on people's minds lately, but I will say it comes down to lack of awareness, which is subsequently a lack of leadership.   This is nothing new for Media.
  • Is Media, PA a Tech Hub that no one knows about?  This could be a tremendous opportunity for Media and the surrounding area.  Matter of fact, tech does like Media. Something I'm doing a bit more research on in the coming months.
  • The Picasso burger has reigned champion in this category for years, but as of last night, I think we have a winner that takes the crown.  Because of my diet, I can't eat out at many places, but in a moment of weakness, I ordered a Sligo Burger last night that was out of this world.  Even the lonely pickle that accompanies these types of platters was fantastic.  (Yes, the pickle was that good.)
Today's motivation brought to you by Apple Radio.  Sit back hit the blue button on your Keurig....It's Media in Two Minutes!

ATM SPOTLIGHT! Media Youth Center
With a large variety of sports kids can choose from these days, and competition from other activities and gaming; pressure continues to mount for clubs like the Media Youth Center.  At one time MYC was the center of youth activities for the community.  These days it's challenged to remain a viable youth center that a lot of us who grew up in this area remember fondly.

The MYC will be hosting a few upcoming fundraiser, so stay tuned.
MEDIA VFW TODAY!

Last Sunday of The Month Means MEDIA VFW Breakfast
It's the best breakfast in town!  All you can eat for $7.  They have made to order omelets and plenty of parking.

The Future of Community Libraries?
An interesting discussion on what communities are doing and considering for their local libraries. Here's the article from the WSJ

Bridge Bogged Down by Four Inches!
It's true, the bridge in question is being bogged down literally by a resident that grows to
I'm not slow, I just take my time.
about four inches and loves the habitat.  No, I'm not talking about 3rd Street bridge, I'm talking about the bog turtle and the affect it's having on the Gradyville Bridge.  Interesting story in the Town Talk. Here's more coverage from Philly.com

First Media Patch,  Now Media Fig?
At about January of this year, Media Patch essentially let go of their well liked, local editor, Courtney Elko, which consequently spelled the END for this local news site.  You can still visit patch, but it's nothing more than a regional aggregation of news, which doesn't do much for Media.

Looks like Fig Media may be making plans to depart Media too.  I've heard they are now selling ads in this location to be included in their next ad/magazine in West Chester, not Media.  What substantiates this further is that they've taken their Media Facebook page down.

Perhaps a re-org?  This was a business in the past that received somewhere around $7,000 from MBA for what I guess was a service to promote this town.  I thought their presentation and photography was great, but it didn't provide the PR strategy this town really should be pursuing for that kind of $.

Is it time to say, "Timber" on E. 2nd Street?
I spoke to one resident on E 2nd Street who wanted me to know that her family, as well as her neighbors have about had it with the falling tree limbs.  Apparently people on this street incurred quite a bit of damage and power outages from the recent storms.  I don't like to see trees coming down, but I understand their situation and agree with them.

Media should really see what's involved with selling the wood from these trees to offset the damage they can cause to sidewalks and property.  Mature hardwood milled properly can command an impressive price in this area.

This is what 4am sounds like
You know what a front-end loader sounds like at 4am?  If you live on State Street you certainly did this week.  Here's a video from a resident who wasn't to happy about the loud work being done at 4am.

I know this work has to be done, but two things here:  1) As a courtesy, Media borough should have let businesses and residents know about this work (i.e. Social Media)  2) Having started a 6am would have been more reasonable considering this type of work was being done throughout the day anyway (i.e. Front St).

Media borough can't seem to agree on a date to mail out a letter, so no one should really be surprised with the lack and timely removal of snow this year.

Apartments Not Likely for GRM
I imagine there will be a lot of information coming out in the next few months regarding plans for GRM.  One update I've learned is that the site may now not include the two Apartment complexes as outlined earlier this year.  These were suppose to be individual units costing around $1,800 per month, but looks like zoning may be a problem.

I've heard chatter about the future of the Acme Market there, but that's anyone's guess.  I was however,  surprised with who was interested in that store space.

11 Bids Later....
Because it's on the next street over from where I live, I was interested in taking a look at this house.  More curiosity than anything else, but I thought I had plenty of time to check out a walk-through.  Turns out I was wrong.  This house I heard had 11 bids and was just recently sold in the last few days.  I know the family who bought it and look forward to seeing their plans to make this a stellar house on 5th St.

Questions about Snow Plowing in Media

#mediapa #delco
I have to think if a borough snow emergency was issued last week, as were in neighboring towns, the roads would have been better plowed leaving for an improved parking situation in Media.

Here's an example of snow banks spilling over on Front Street into the parking spaces that are clearly unusable.  As you can see this street was plowed, but obviously not as a snow emergency route.  Otherwise the snow would have been removed up to the curb, after cars were removed during a snow emergency.   You'll also now see signs by the Media Police stating "No Parking."

Why aren't borough roads being properly plowed to prevent these issues?  Where's the situational awareness of what's happening in town with all this snow?  Mayor McMahon?

AmazonPRIME Delivered by USPS on Sunday's in Media, PA

If you're not familiar with AmazonPRIME you can read more about it here.  For those that are, you will now be able to receive packages via the Media post office on Sundays.  This was quite a story at the end of 2013, but has now made its way to our area.  Essentially, if you order a package from Amazon on Friday, you'll receive it by Sunday to use on Monday.  Now, I don't have a real world example of why delivering on Sundays would be such a value to me, but the example used was a situation where parents could order items for their kids to have for school that Monday.

Okay, fine, that's probably an edge-case scenario highlighting the service but there's a lot more to this than just Sunday delivery.  It's a capability that could prove much more vital for a company that has spent billions in new warehouses, logistics and even contracting out a governmental entity - the US Post Office.  Forget the delivery by drones, that's way beyond four years out which isn't much worth the discussion other than the "WOW" factor.  And, yes, it is quite a concept.

The "capability" I see for this Sunday delivery service is that of a trial for the future grocery delivery by way of AmazonFresh.  In fact, AmazonFresh is up and running in locations like Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.  There's a big market for the commercial food space  and this could start encroaching in that area, even maybe competing for restaurants in Media.  You don't think US Foods and Sysco are noticing?  As for residential service, people use the internet to find love; finding the best price on Spanish olives delivered to your front door can't be too far away.

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES

Good Morning, World!  I'm dreaming of a white Easter! (kidding) I know if you live in Media there are a lot of questions and complaints regarding the recent snow falls and how much this has impeded driving and parking.  Essentially, many side roads in Media are now physically limited to one-way traffic due to the snowbanks on either sides of the streets.  There's about half the space we normally have for two-way traffic.

Delaware County Council - Advocates for the Hungry
Nice job by Delaware County Council with bringing awareness to the challenges of food assistance for those in need in the community. We have our own food bank in Media which has over the last year been the recipient of generous donations.  I admit, I never knew Media had a food bank until someone brought it to my attention and I went down there to see it myself.  Sometimes, getting the word out can make an immediate impact.

T-Mobile in Media Doesn't Sound Bad
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback on the cell coverage provided by T-Mobile in the Media area.  Sounds as though, based on the comments, that people are quite happy with this company and the coverage they provide.  Wasn't aware of how much a difference wifi connectivity made for incoming/outgoing calls.  If you're looking to switch carries due to costs and contracts, you may want to look at T-Mobile.

Community Mailboxes - A Dying Breed
In the grand scheme of things, this probably doesn't mean much to 99% of the residents, but the community mailbox at the corner of State Street and Veteran's Square is GONE.  Now, I know it's been gone for some time, and probably due to lack of use, but much like authenticity of those steal fire-escapes, these too are slowly disappearing.

Retail (NO)Business in Media
I'd like to recognize Jean Leone and the efforts she put forth as Media's strongest advocate for retail businesses in this town. It's unfortunate for this town and its businesses to have seen the "Going Out of Business" sign on her store this weekend.  She had the right ideas and ambition to help Media's struggling retail stores.  I'm not so sure the Media Business Authority felt the same way.

Last Fall people scoffed when I brought up the fact that many retailers in town had signed a petition to get better information on how the Media Business Authority operated. The gist of the petition represented the feeling that retailers weren't being properly represented by the MBA, while the restaurants in town were.  Since that time at least 2 Media retail businesses have gone out of business.

Slopefest in Media, PA? (Seriously, don't even try it)
To bring some levity to the harsh winter we had; here's some creative thinking and opportunity towards the significant snow falls we've had here on the east coast.

Questions This Week About Snow in the Borough
First-off, I could tell you about the snow removal and updates on many municipalities around Media, because they openly share information via social media.  That's being proactive and getting things done.  For the last two nights the icy conditions on Media roads were about as bad as the snowfall that caused them.  Where was the proactive response to these safety issues?  Anyone get a message from the borough that salt trucks would be dispatched, that they were working on it?  Or did you just hope a salt truck would drive by?  It's as easy to communicate important updates like these as it is sending a text message, but for many we were left sliding through stop signs, especially on Monroe St.  All of this falls under leadership, or lack thereof.

  • Why wasn't a snow emergency declared in Media?  Yes, this is a good question that I don't have an answer for.  You'll have to ask Mayor McMahon on what the criteria is for that decision.  Good luck with that.
  • Will the snow banks on State Street be removed?  When parked cars are pushed out further into the middle of State Street due to the snow banks, traffic becomes a huge problem when the trolley runs down the street.  Historically, Septa has run buses in lieu of the trolley to counter this problem.  Also, Septa has in the past given funds to have the snow banks removed from State Street.
  • Why were the streets so bad?  This varied from street to street, but some did complain the removal of snow was lacking.  I believe the borough budget for snow removal is about $25,000, but I have a question about overtime.  I understand the borough wasn't too generous with overtime for snow removal.  I'll investigate that more, but had they not spent 10s of thousands of dollars keeping 3rd Street closed, there would have been enough money.
  • Councilwoman Amy Johnson leaves unregistered trailer on Edgmont for weeks.  Of all the things happening, the last thing I should be pointing out is an unregistered trailer (no-license tag) that Councilwoman Amy Johnson has sitting on Egdmont street outside her house for the last few weeks.  I got complaints about it and of all people, her neighbor Council President, Brian Hall should know better and address it.

How good is your cell phone coverage in Media? What's your experience with T-Mobile?

Again this week I was asked if T-Mobile’s coverage is good enough to justify a switch.  This is hard to gauge without people’s input, but with a recent move by T-MOBILE to pay you to leave your current carrier, it may be worth a frank discussion. I use AT&T and have for years.  I found their coverage(iPhone 4s) here in Media borough to be quite good for both voice and data(3G), but I imagine at a cost of over $100 per month, I could do better on price.  I’m not looking to change carriers, but with T-Mobile offering a compelling deal, it may come down to just how good does T-Mobile cover Media and the surrounding area.

If you have service by T-Mobile, or any of the other carriers in Media you’d like to comment on, quite a few people would appreciate hearing your experience.

What Ever Happened to ABC? And Made In Media, PA?

Made in Media, PA
I can't remember how this topic of conversation came up, but someone asked me last night, "what ever happened to ABC?"  For those that don't know ABC was American Baseball Cap who assembled batting helmets right here in Media, PA.  They were produced just across the street from the Media train station and were known world wide.  In fact, they were responsible for pioneering the effort to make the game safer, even after some resistance from some hall of famers.

ABC was a big part of the community too!  Anyone who played Media baseball always wanted to be on the team this company sponsored.  I remember seeing their logo all over the place, but back then I didn't really understand their contribution to the sport or how well known they were.  They also did something that may even be harder to comprehend in this day in age; they actually produced something that was stamped: Made in Media, PA.

I would love to see someday Media be on the map again as a place that produces things.  I know there are a lot of challenges for something like this to happen, but there is a interesting movement going on to do just that in many places in this country.  You have start-ups making american made products like watches and bicycles in Detroit, Michigan and motorbikes in Goshen, Indiana.  Perhaps the first step is thinking that it CAN BE DONE!

As for ABC, I'm not sure what happened to this company.  From the few articles I was able to find and even some history, there is nothing about them after 2007.  Perhaps the moved on, perhaps they went out of business; I don't know whatever happened to ABC.

Media in Two Minutes

MEDIA IN TWO MINUTES

Thanks for reading this week!  I'll try to keep it on the short side as the goal here is to provide a two-minute brief of what's going on in Media, PA.  Sometimes that's not so easy with so much going on, but if it makes M2M, it's important to someone. That's not to say I couldn't do a Media in Five Minutes, but in these times who's got five undivided minutes?
Thanks for the MANY comments and feedback on Project ATM-S, which included HD video on the treacherous road conditions we had over the last few weeks due to the weather.  There are big plans in the works for more feature-rich content.
Let's Go!

ATM SPOTLIGHT: Anyone who had a part in helping us through last week's ice storm.  The list here is long, but that includes PECO,  Police/Fire Depts., volunteers, municipal workers, neighbors and the community.  Thanks to those who also shared information over social networks letting us know about power outages and offers of assistance for those in need. That's pretty cool!!!

Media Blood Drive - GET THERE!
The Red Cross is in dire need of blood with recent supplies being so low.  Show some Media pride, finish your breakfast and get on over to the Media Community Center which will be open at 9am this morning.

Giving blood isn't easy for those who have an aversion to this procedure; I'm one of them.   Truthfully, I'd rather be pushed down a flight of stairs than have blood drawn, but I too need to step up and do my part.  Maybe I'll see you there

Media Rotary Gearing Up to Help Media Food Bank
I received a message that Media Rotary is looking to organize a fundraising effort for the Media Food Bank.  There will be more about this in the coming weeks, but I love the initiative and what it'll do for those in need.  I'd like to see if we could get some sponsors for this, and of course, the star power we have in our own community that have been so generous to these causes.

MEDIA IS GOING UBER
If you don't know what UBER is, you can check out what they do here.  The concept is easy: Request, Ride and Pay via your Mobile Phone.  I've been in contact with them and pitched a few ideas regarding why they should explore the market more in our area.  They already have service here, but are interested in educating more people about what they do.

I actually love the idea and am discussing a few things with them next week.  So, we'll see where that goes.  See?  We can bring a lot of cools things and services here to Media, we just need to channel the enthusiasm.

Electricity and Lack Thereof
Last week's power outages was only behind Hurican Sandy in the amount of people who were affected by loss of electricity.  Amazingly, from what I understand, most of Media had power, but based on PECO’s assessments, as many as a quarter didn't.  In the outlining areas it was much worse.

It’s really unexplainable how the electricity grid is divided among the borough.  Some people will have an outage, while their neighbors or businesses across the street aren’t affected.  I live on 6th Street which is usually the first to suffer, but miraculously it didn’t happen this time.  I still hold on to my kerosene heaters though.

What we need to know about Olive Street Garage
I’ll spare you how long I’ve been after this information (years!), but this town really needs to know the real deal on this project.  As it stands, it looks like borough council is currently soliciting RFPs to possibly begin work this June.  Bad timing to say the least, but here are other questions people what answers to!

  1. How bad in disrepair is this structure and what caused it?  Water has been leaking through it for years.  Was in neglected?
  2. What's the cost of adding an additional level?
  3. Is it feasible to tear-down and have a new structure built with an additional floor for more parking?  West Chester Borough has had success with their new parking garages.
  4. Can this be done in the March/April timeframe, instead at the height of Dining Under the Stars
ATM Everywhere, but here’s where it is mostly.
If you follow this blog on Facebook and Twitter, you’ll always get the updates that are posted.  The website at www.allthingsmediapa.com is delayed a bit when there is fast moving information like weather.  The reason is, it’s much easier and faster to post on FB, than the added steps done to update the website.  Everything cascades down to Twitter, regardless of which site is updated first.  No worries if you prefer the website, 90% of the time, the website is updated first.

Point being, if you’re looking for breaking updates, Facebook gets them first.

Another Vacancy in Media
The flooring store that was located in the old Hill’s Seafood build is now vacant.  Unfortunately, I hear another retail store will also be closing on State Street in the coming months.

Media Borough Lacked Important Leadership During Recent Ice Storm

#delcosnow

Having had a tree fall on my house, I didn't need Pennsylvania to issue a State of Emergency to know we were going to be in for a rough time during the ice storm earlier this week.  For thousands of others, that misery came in the form of loss of power and heat. This wasn't just a matter of inconvenience, but for many, an unwanted exercise in survival that has lasted for days.

In what is being described as PECO's biggest power outage just after Hurricane Sandy, I do want to recognized the municipalities of Middletown, Upper Providence and even Brookhaven for their efforts towards providing timely, proactive information.  Whether holding conference calls with PECO, providing information on warming centers, locations for generators, or even thanking the emergency response teams for around the clock assistance, they stepped up and took control of the matter.

PECO Summary As of 2/6 7:19pm EST
Outages vs. Total Customers
Unfortunately, we here in Media received zilch in terms of any useful information on what the borough was doing during this storm.  If anything, it would have been appreciated to have received just one paragraph from Mayor McMahon or council officials stating "this is what's going on, this is what we're doing, this is the information you need to know and here's what to expect." WE GOT NOTHING.

I have a problem with people who campaign on generalities such as "thinking outside the box" and "roll my sleeves up to get the job done."  I now have a bigger problem with those same people who were elected and did absolutely ZERO for this town while last night PECO reported a quarter of the customers in Media were without power.

You get what you pay for.  For Media, you get what you voted for!

Important Update From Upper Providence on Ongoing Power Outages

#delcosnow

Upper Providence, Council Chair, Joe Solomon gives update on questions residents and businesses have had about the recent storm and power outages.

Important Update From PECO Conf. Call on Ongoing Power Outages

#delcosnow

Middletown Township - Delco, PA Republican Party2/6 PM update on power outages in Middletown Township from a Conference Call with PECO at 3pm Thursday:
This is the second largest outage in PECO history behind Hurricane Sandy. 1,500 of the ~ 4,500 homes in the Township are without power. Area wide, PECO has reduced outages from 715,000 to 417,000 (42,000 in Delaware County) in the past 24 hours. PECO's focus remains on priority 1 areas (critical roadways, hospitals, sewage treatment) before they get to schools (Priority 2) and then residences in the 6 county area.

PECO hopes to get the outage number down to 300,000 tomorrow, these customers will be the beneficiaries of their proximity to repairs in Priority 1 and 2 areas. Surrounding utility companies will have crews here and working Friday, PECO said any more labor on hand and they become over-saturated with the help. They expect to have the full grid up and running by Sunday with some stragglers in to next week.

So no new news for Middletown - Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR's) remain in days, not hours. PECO is recommending if you are without power that you make arrangements to stay elsewhere through the weekend.

Other news you might be able to use:

Warming centers: American Red Cross @ West Chester University Fieldhouse, 855 S. New Street, West Chester.

Pet warming centers: Ehringer Gym, 700 S. Church Street. West Chester, PA

Generators: Snyder's Ace Hardware will have 8 55 watt and 2 65 watt generators arriving tomorrow at their location @ Mt. Alverno and Pennell Road (610.459.0221)

Important Update from Middletown Township on Ongoing Power Outage in the Area

Per Middletown Township - Delco, PA Republican Party Facebook Page:
UPDATE on power outages in Middletown Township: Approximately 25% of the homes in the Township are without power, more to the north and western end.
PECO is planning a conference call Thursday morning Feb 6 with Delaware County Municipalities to provide time estimates on repairs. Early indications from PECO are potentially days before the full system is restored.
Delaware County has been hit worse in the north and west, but Delco has overall made out better than other surrounding Counties. PECO is characterizing damage to their total system at 'Hurricane Sandy' levels and is already having support from other power companies sent in to help restore service.
