Lease sign posted for State Street location

With virtually all the new businesses coming to State Street in the last 4 years being a restaurant/bar, could this location be anything other than that? A year ago, a liquor license on State Street was going for around $80 - $90k, that's now shot up to well over $120k due to convenience stores and super markets getting into the take-out beer/wine business.  To make this site work as a restaurant/bar, you'll need deep pockets and a vision on how to compete in a what many feel is an oversaturated market. I'm thinking something on the level of Iron Hill or Brick-N-Brew.  Both seem to lead the pack in that category and have achieved notable success in Media.  Something like a Sligo might work there too.

As for something retail oriented, it better consist of something unique, convenient and special that can't easily be bought online. Otherwise, you'll be competing with the world, not just local merchants.

  1. Bring back the PA wine spirit store...There's no parking at the other location either

  2. Given the amount of craft beer in town; I think its about time that Media gets a homebrew supply shop. Beer/wine/cider kits, green coffee all that jazz. It would certainly be unique, while still playing to one of the strengths of the town.

And while most of that stuff IS available online, homebrewers generally prefer to shop locally. The nearest homebrew supply is Brew Your Own Beer out in Havertown. It's a great little store, but a bit of a drive...

  3. I want to see retail, but agree that it just is not happening. Any restaurant/bar at this point is going to simply take business from someone else. Until more local housing comes on line, I really think we are maxed out.
