The Hampton Inn and Suites is back and here's the latest

Site of the Hampton Inn and Suites coming to Media, PA

There's a lot about the Hampton Inn and Suites coming to Media that people need to be brought up to speed on.  I would have hoped Media Borough knew enough to provide a revised overview and new timeline, but I'm hearing this caught them by surprise.

It's been well over a decade since anything of importance, or really anything at all, has been discussed or summarized about the long awaited Media Hampton Inn, however,  I can tell you that project is back with work started in earnest last week to raze the abandoned building.

From where things left off years ago, it will still be a Hampton Inn and comprise of about ~116 rooms and be about 4 stories.  The lawsuit borough about by residents over the initial design have been settled and are not expected to infringe on the current plans or schedules.  The lengthy delay had more to do with economic/financial environment and motivation, than anything else.

The hotel will not have a restaurant but is expected to have a liquor license of some sort and facilities for moderate sized gatherings.  It was hoped this would have been a nice compliment to the Towne House banquet/reception business, but as things worked out, we'll never know.  A shuttle bus to and from State Street would be a nice option and might be considered, but I know of no definite plans at this stage.

As for what will be done towards mitigating traffic, that's a good question.  Traffic is different today than it was 12 years ago.  I will point out that even without the hotel currently, there is a dire need for a traffic signal at the intersection of Jefferson and Providence Rd.  The obtuse angle in which Beatty road intersect Providence Rd by Jefferson Street is in need of improvement.  Not sure what can be done or negotiated at this point, but that intersection is a problem NOW.

Updated timelines on completion haven't been shared yet, but the way things are going now, I'd say 2018.

I'll provide updates as they become available.  If you have questions, please leave a comment below. If I don't have the answer, I'll try to get one for you.

  1. Should we expect it to look just like every other Hapmpton Inn?

  2. Do we have any idea what's going to happen to the Towne House?

    1. There hasn't been much information on the future plans of this location, but the most plausible explanation I've heard is that the developer is sitting back to see how some of the other current projects in Media progress. There are a lot of high-end units about to hit the market.

  3. Did Kristine McCabes previous post about the demolition dust and her daughters incessant coughing over the dust get addressed does media borough care about the health and safety of neighboring residents does media borough have someone qualified to mitigate problems like this in both commercial and residential settings

    2. It's more the concern of asbestos and other contaminants released into the air during any demo and a request to see said certifications with no response. Now, you can feel free to email me at mccabekristen325@gmail.com with your address and I will be more than happy to bring demolition into your backyard with zero warning. I will then call you a drama queen when the demolition is followed by a cough in a teeny tiny human which seems to have subsided after the appearance of a water truck (that should be available from jump at any demo to mitigate the dust). Pinnacle took 8 or so years to get its financing together. Forgive me for not having the utmost, or any at all, confidence that they have their t's crossed with regard to anything else in their lives.

  4. The Beatty/Jefferson, Providence rd intersection is a minor annoyance a few hours of the day. A light is not needed as the intersection stands now. Making Jefferson one way (west) for a block or two might help assuage the situation. After the hotel is functioning, a light might be in order, let's not jump to adding yet another light until we see if we need it.

While on the subject of traffic...What is wrong with people? The traffic circle on 320 in Swarthmore is a moron magnet! The concept is simple: as you approach, slow down and merge with traffic...as you would when encountering a yield sign. You fall in behind the existing traffic, matching their speed and continue around in a left hand arc until you see your desired "exit" at which time you turn to your right. That's it! Don't stop and wave people to pull out in front of you. Don't speed up and try to beat people before they can merge. Swarthmore should commission an app: "An idiots guide to navigating traffic circles" of course it would need several warnings not to use the app while attempting to navigate through a traffic circle.

    1. Obviously, no one using the circle is from Jersey! LOL!

  5. There are multiple locations on Providence Road that need a well designed roundabout that will ease a lot of traffic issues at peak times of the day. This will make the intersections: safer (less accidents) and with better flow. Growing up with roundabouts I would suggest the Swarthmore one is not the best designed roundabout, but drivers not knowing how to use them does not help either.
