Changes envisioned for Veteran's Square with seating, landscaping, raised wooden deck and more.

Costs haven't been projected yet, nor has it been determined how the project will be paid for (i.e. grants); but here's a conceptual design of what's being proposed on Veteran's Square next to the Verizon Central Office building.

No word yet on if this project has been approved or when it might start.

  1. Hopefully the price tag will be traveled to the public in advance unlike the wildly u popular
Pocket park at 5th and broomall
Also why has the borough of media's debt service doubled in the last three years has
Their credit rating dropped or is just too much spending in general ?

    1. I guess since you're just allowed to make shit up, I will to. First, here's a #fact.. The park isn't wildly unpopular.. Look at the minutes for the council meeting, vast majority were for it, except for 1 or 2 idiots.

Second.. Where are you seeing their debt service doubled? I just looked at it, yea, more facts, you're wrong.

    2. Media borough's debt service, budgeted at $438,000 for 2017. It was $220,604 back in 2015

    3. Anon 7:42 please tell me where I can find the minutes from the council meeting where all but "1 or 2 idiots" where in favor of the park. I don't see any minutes posted on line.

All, except some council members, who spoke at the council meeting on April 20, 2017 where against the purchase. You can check out the council meeting video on youtube.com, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT5BgupswVI) This video also includes the back and forth banter between council and the residents that spoke at the meeting.

    4. Why not buy the Strine property
And restablish the tennis courts that
Is on the property this way media borough doesn't have to depend on the RTM barrel field for tennis activity
I'm sure media borough and media real estate have commonality of interests

  2. Would be great for Media if the Verizon building could someday be put to different use. For the life of me why one of the most prominent locations in town - State and Veterans Square - is taken for the purpose of housing servers and switching equipment is a mystery to me. I can only wonder if the real estate marketplace will eventually allow Verizon to move out and the building can be put to some other use. Architecturally it's a pretty nice looking structure and it could be made even nicer for State Street location.

    1. When it was placed there not much in the way of retail, was in Media. Everything was closed on Sundays as well. Now that there is more foot traffic for retail and restaurants, it seems silly to not utilize the space in another way. Verizon probably doesn't want to move it due to cost.

  3. This looks nice and the extra trees on the street will be even nicer during the hotter months. Hopefully this design structure can be continued up and down both sides of that street from Baltimore Pike to the intersection with Front Street.

    1. That would be so nice. A total dream (as parking issues would be brought up) would be to totally close off that stretch and make it all pedestrian. A plaza to walk and dine on.

Looks like the borough Gardner might have more to do with all these
      Ideas for veterans square

    1. You're citing a council meeting that happened two weeks after the initial meeting -- of course only people who weren't in favor of it would be the only ones to attend..

This is the original meeting... lots of people in favor of, only a couple not in favor

    2. The meeting you are referring to was a “private” meeting, only residents adjacent to or a certain distance from the property where invited to attend. When asked, council did not know what the criteria was for receiving an invite to the private meeting. The purchase price was NOT disclosed at that meeting. I wonder why only a select group of residents where invited to that meeting.

Reading the minutes from that meeting there are several people who like the idea, with some concerns about what the park will become. I’m sure those concerns still exist since, as council stated, they do not know what the park will become. There are also several who opposed the idea at that same meeting.

I would hardly call it a consensus either way.

Why would only people who oppose the park attend the meeting?

    3. Reread those minutes... you have the same people that are against it saying different things multiple times about why they're against it... then the link YOU reference has... ta da! ... those same people still against it.

Why would only people who oppose the park attend the meeting?
      Seriously?

Because the silent majority are all for the park; I can't believe I have to explain that concept to you -- you just proved it yourself because here we are MONTHS after the vote to move forward on the park and you're still bitter!

    4. Again capital spending on this scale
Should be put out to vote for all
Media Residemts so at least everyone is part of process do we really know what special treatment the borough employee might be receiving as a result of selling the property to their employers ? What is it free legal counsel from Mr Scott media boroughs
Solicitor ? Really all residents should vote on matters like this that way everyone has a voice through their vote

    5. Anonymous is so enlighten. Maybe someday the rest of us will be too.

Thanks for letting me know I'm bitter, I thought I was expressing my opinion.

RTMSD raised our taxes. The state, $2 billion in the red, will likely have a substantial increase once the pols in Harrisburg figure out which if not all the taxes that will increased.

I guess anonymous is wealthy enough not to care.

    6. You are so smart and wise, Vince. We should all be so lucky... I can't believe we haven't elected you as our mayor yet.

We should even rename our beautiful borough Pennoniville, and the shit boxes you'd like to build on the pocket park can get a catchy name too like Vince's Villas

    7. Interestingly the borough of Media was deeded the pocket park on 06/29/2017 and still haven't cut the grass. They paid $350,000 for it. Plus, they are in violation of their own ordinance: § 165-25

      Grass, brush and weeds.

No person, firm or corporation owning or occupying any property within the Borough of Media shall permit any grass, brush or weeds or any vegetation whatsoever not edible or planted for some useful or ornamental purpose to grow or remain upon such premises so as to exceed a height of 12 inches or to throw off any unpleasant or noxious odor or to conceal any filthy deposit or to create or produce pollen within 20 feet of any curbline or within 100 feet of any building, pole, structure, building material or other inflammable material or shrubbery on an adjoining property.

    8. Feel free to call Media Boroigh the borough manager directs the highway and streets dept. who cuts grass

it did look like the grass was cut so not sure if your info is accurate or not ?
As a taxpayer Media boroughs interaction and communication with you should be beyond reproach let us know what feedback you get

  6. The majority of the people who live next to the pocket park are against it. Stop the semantics and distractions. But, most people don't live next to the park and don't care what the people next to the park want. The end.

    1. Anon 8-24-17 I understand your plight please keep in mind our borough manger Jeff Smith for a pocket park gets paid a six figure salary to ignore what you think I'm for online polls for capital spending such as the one that will cost the borough of media well above 350 k

    2. Just because you write something online doesn't make it true. Reread the minutes of the meeting that was specifically for the residents that live next to the park -- vast majority (i.e., everyone there except for 1 or 2 people) were FOR the park.. but I guess if you just close your eyes and put your fingers in your ears, you can convince yourself otherwise.

    3. Meeting minutes April 6, 2017; 15 people were listed as attending and commenting at the meeting, not including council members. 7 stated they would be in favor of the park or keeping it green. Some supporters stated concerns, for instance one supported stated "with proper landscaping and hardscaping, privacy can be achieved and other concerns that his neighbors have can be mitigated." 3 appeared to be against the park, the other 5 had questions but their opnion was not stated one way or the other.

7 out of 15, (47%) is that a "vast majority"

  7. Will the borough manager be holding meet and greats with his staff at the pocket park most of media just knows Jeff Smith as a name and if your not wealthy enough to care someone who earns a lot of money at tax payer expense
Think we need to take a hard look at the salaries of some of the media borough
    Officials

    1. What silent majority if you want to have something silent maybe a silent auction should have taken place for the parcel. Of land the family that owned it would be out of the spotlight and have more money to spend on college education and retirement

      Delete
    2. The family owed over $75k on their house in back taxes and over $30k in back taxes on the land (pocket park). So, that's over $100k right there, meaning a little less for their college education and retirement. Again, the majority of the residents who live next to the pocket park do not want it. But, August 25, 2017 9:27am, is somehow emotionally attached to believing and convincing other people that they are not. Not sure why, unless they have a vested interest. And, the GRASS WAS NOT CUT.

    4. If Media Borough gets a legal dispensary For cannabis could the parcel be planted with hemp this way it would be profitable to cut the grass and it might be a revenue generator for the borough of media- this also would lend a real purpose to the large fence that would need to installed around the pocket park. The park could be nicknamed simply/ pot park also every tax payer would benefit from the park
