Media in Two Minutes

Dear Readers,

First and foremost, I'd like to thank those who reached out to me last week and offered to help with my campaign.  I greatly appreciate that and glad to have you part of the cause.  We have some great stuff planned, so stay tuned and get ready to have some fun.

With interesting news this week about Third Street Bridge, I wanted to share a story about why this still remains a mess and how I'll do a better job.  This time last year I was approached on State Street outside of Spasso's by Mayor Bob McMahon who made a concerted effort to let me know he supported
Leadership for Media
opening the Third Street Bridge with two way traffic.  I replied with something of the effect, "Ok, make it known and do something about it."  A few weeks later a heated debate erupted at a Borough Council meeting regarding the matter with many people giving positions, except Mayor McMahon.  After the meeting, a council person asked why hadn't he spoken up?  He stated no one asked him.

This is the problem Media is going through right now.  We have elected officials too intimated by different factions to speak up and make decisions for what's best for Media.  They'll agree with the last person they speak to, or say nothing as though that's acceptable.  It's political posturing, and it's wrong!
If you've read this blog for any length of time, you'll know that's not going to happen to me and why I am a proponent of term limits.  No one should be a professional politician for 18 years!

Ok, let's get to Media in Two Minutes!
Media in Two Minutes

Penncrest Football Goes 6-1
With a win over Radnor last Friday, the Lions go 6-1.  Home coming is coming up next week, so show some Penncrest Pride and stop on by and see a game.

Rose Tree Reserve Gets Underway
Rose Tree Reserve Sales Office
Things are starting to pickup with the 112 Townhomes expected at Rose Tree Reserve.  They've cleared a lot and setup a management/sales trailer at the entrance off of Baltimore Pike.  It's not yet online officially, but looks like it will be in the next week or two.

Looking Good, Media!
In these busy times, people can overlook the little things, but I appreciate those who take the time to decorate for the holidays.  With Halloween around the corner, many of the businesses and homes carry on the tradition with decorations.  Fast and Fancy has decorations, along with the Plumstead and others.  Oakmont looks great, as well as, the house on 4th and Monroe.  Check'em out, this is what makes Media......Media.

3 New Home Coming to Radnor and E. Franklin Streets
If you have $400k to spend and are looking for a place in Media, you may want to check out 3 new homes to be built just off of Baltimore Avenue by the Super Sunoco station.  Not sure when these will be completed, but heavy equipment is on the lot and clearing has begun.

Doug Randolph Media Sports Legend!
Doug Randolph Baseball Card
If you were good enough to have your own baseball card and also have someone carrying it around in their pocket decades after you played, then you get the spotlight on ATM.  Congratulations to Doug Randolph, who still has his fans and put Media on the map when it came to sports.  That's just FLAT OUT COOL!

Media Rotarians and DCTMA
Media Rotarians and DCTMA
These aren't household names yet, but they will be soon with all the efforts they put forth to make Media better.  A couple weeks ago they got us bike racks, and now they are on to beautifying the borough with a recent project at the Media train station.   Partnering with the community is what these groups are all about.  Nice Job!

Save the R3 (Media/Elwyn) Line!
A couple weeks ago I commented on a recent news report regarding the needed repair of the Media/Elwyn Line.  It looks like Media Borough Council also has something to say about that too, but were too challenged with trying to figure out when a letter should be mailed to address the concern.
Trestle Crossing at Crum Creek (Media/Elwyn) Line

Not one to sit around to wait for things to happen, I reached out to Media's State Representative, Tom Killion (168th) asking what can be done to ensure Septa has the funding to keep this line open. If you ride this line like I do, you'll want to pay close attention.

He called me back and said this funding will be tied up in the upcoming Pennsylvania Transportation Funding bill, which he supports.  I am told, however, that State Representative, Steve Barrar (reps Chadds Ford, Concord area) of the 160th district does not support this bill.  I'll be reaching out to Rep. Barrar this week.

As an added bonus, I actually visited the site yesterday where the R3 Line crosses Crum Creek.  I'm not a structural engineer, so I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but the trestle sure looks like it's in need of repair.

GRM Update!
Looks like the upcoming changes to GRM won't be moderate, but quite substantial from what I'm hearing this week.  I don't expect they'll knock everything down, but It'll definitely look different with a town center concept as part of the vision.

Here's a story about a recent project that is about to take place in Devon on the old Waterloo Gardens property.  I think this lends to the excitement of what's possible for the GRM.

  1. A thank you to Tedman, and anybody else, who can move Steve Barrar off of any and all positions that are hurtful to our county. The $2.5 billion transportation bill passed by the PA Senate (with only 2 or 3 votes against) should be a no-brainer in the PA House, but folks like Barrar would rather align themselves with the anti-Greater Philadelphia Area Caucus. I'm very happy to hear that Tom Killion understands that both roads and public transportation are vital non-partisan drivers of economic development.

  2. Agree that leadership is a campaign issue, but you might want to back off this bridge thing. The situation is so fouled up that you cannot possibly fix it. Stick to things you can actually improve.

  3. MM, in the interest of full disclosure, why don't you tell us exactly impact the proposed legislation will have on gasoline taxes?

    1. I don't recall writing the bill myself, but I think the consumer cost per gallon would go up as much as 25 cents if the worst predictions were true. I don't see how else we should pay for transportation improvements however...............and quite frankly neither did the PA Senate or the Gov.

    2. And this 25 cents per gallon is for improvements, you say, or just maintaining the status quo?

  4. So, it seems TM and MM support a bill that could result in a gasoline tax increase of 25 cents on the gallon. For me, that's 16 gallons per week, or $208 per year.

    1. Yes, that is the case. I have a 55 mile round trip to work each day, so I'm expecting to have to pay more for gas in order to provide funding for vital infrastructure repairs and improvements in PA. The money has to come from somewhere and a gas tax is the only one that collects funds based on use of what we're funding / improving.

    2. Sorry, but I believe the reply I meant to put here was placed one comment above.

  6. Wow... imagine the cost to small business

  7. It is either raise taxes on gasoline or institute tolls on more roads (such as US 422). One way or another the aging infrastructure needs improvement and public transportation has to be funded. Recall the last time SEPTA regional rail employees were on strike: traffic in and out of Philly from the surrounding burbs was a nightmare. Imagine the lost time (and revenue) caused by such delays.

  8. I'd be willing to pay, but I'd prefer a property tax over a gas tax... at least you can deduct a property tax from your federal return.

  9. How funny... the D's seem to rule Media and the related local issues, the R's seem to control state issues, and the D's seem to have the fed level cornered. Just interesting. That is all.
