Granite Run Mall Gives Deadline to Vacate Dec 31st 2014
The end of an era - Granite Run Mall to Close
This weekend I learned that things are progressing with the closure of the Granite Run Mall. From what I understand occupants in the interior mall area have been told the mall will close on December, 31st. Some businesses are in the process or finding new places to relocate to, but it's unclear if others will do the same or decide to just close.
I heard Margart Kuo's plans to stick around and is interested in opening a new restaurant when the new center is ready.
It seems that is exactly what is happening with the purchase and the renovation. Somebody is stepping in and revamping it. The location will remain a retail space, with the major box stores remaining as hubs and an updated layout for smaller retail . Those entities within the current mall might find themselves back in the newly removed space once everything is built out.
The lack of a municipal police department probably added to the mall's demise. Don't get me wrong, PSP is great and a municipal police force is expensive. But retail theft and related nuisance crimes are difficult to combat when criminals know the PSP response may be delayed due to commitments elsewhere. Too many commitments and too few resources. A major hospital, large residential population, university campus, multuple highways, mall and thriving YMCA.... too much demand for PSP. Hope Middletown is planning realistically.
Good riddance. The golden age of the Granite Run Mall was probably the early 80's when kids still played pinball and video games at arcades. Since then it's been reeling. I agree with the new concept. It would be perfect for that location. They create a faux downtown central business district. They got something like that over in Exton and also up in Warrington, Bucks County.
End of an Era., I wish someone would have stepped in and revamped this place.
