Granite Run Mall Update - It's not closing just yet......

Despite reports that the Granite Run Mall is closing for good on December 31st, it's not.  I was there this week to take one last stroll and say my last farewell, but in the distance by the JC Penny store, I saw the Chick-Fil-a with a line in front of the cashier.  Dang! Even in an empty mall, that place does a heck of a business - always did!  Walking around there are still a few businesses open, but less than there were a few weeks ago, so the end is near, or nearer.

No, the whole deal hasn't fallen through, but the very few businesses still left in the "mall" section will be there beyond 12/31/14.  I've heard by someone close to the matter that mall will remain open until they have a firm date on when construction/demolition might begin.  No one knows for sure when that might start, but until then it's business as usual at the mall - whatever that might mean.

As I walked out, I wondered what businesses stood the test of time and lasted since the mall's opening in 1974.   I don't know for sure and could be wrong, but it seems as though Spencer's Gifts (I have know idea how, or more so, why), the Hallmark card shop and maybe a Margaret Kuo restaurant of some iteration made it through 40 years.

For those that remember, here's an old brochure for Aladdin's Castle and a 1982 menu from Farrell's, which both have long since passed.

  2. I used to go to the mall in the 80s with my 2$ weekly allowance and get tokens at Aladdin's Castle. Walking in to Aladdin's Castle and hearing all the games blaring and lights flashing was strangely comforting.
