Sinfully Delicious Bakery closes their store in Media, PA
Having opened in the Fall of 2011, Sinfully Delicious Bakery has close their Media location on Monroe Street. No indication on what might occupy this location in the future.
I would assume that there just isn't a market for a small bakery. Two have now closed recently (Viso's and this one). While I prefer the baked goods from a bakery as opposed to a supermarket, that might not be true for the majority, as the price is usually a major difference
The day to day market cannot support a specialty like a bakery. If there weren't so many breakfast / coffee shops maybe. I think every town needs a bakery. Love that place on 320 near the wawa.
Is it the rent? Is it parking? Other towns can support a bakery but Media has had the Sweet Potato bakery, Viso's and now Sinfully Delicious open and close. People in Brookhaven, Broomall and Aston will buy baked goods at a bakery, but folks in Media only go to the grocery store? It just doesn't make sense. What's the story??
A good, old fashioned bakery might survive. I think the ones you've mentioned were way too specialized. In addition, you have to remember that there are relatively few residents in this little borough as compared to those other nearby suburbs. We get a great turnout in the evening for the restaurants, and some lawyers and visitors to the courthouse during the daytime, but are those folks really going to stop at a place called sinfully delicious? Obviously not. It's not necessarily all about rent and parking meters. It's about having a business plan that recognizes the existing limitations and embraces the unique demographics and opportunities.
IMO, a bakery has to be standout amazing for people to buy there. you can get ordinary cupcakes, cake, etc at the supermarket but if you are making fresh croissants or blueberry galettes, you are going to get some business. Even these cupcake places that do gourmet flavors do very well. Sinfully Delicious was not a standout bakery and it received very bad reviews. Viso did not have a good selection in the store - it was mostly cookies. Meh...no sfogliatelle, no lobster tails...no Napolians...
Need something like Metropolitan Bakery or Le Bus. A bakery that bakes bread and desserts and sells them from its own shop, distributes through other retailers, and wholesales to the local restaurants.
Bought a carrot cake from there that was better than average. Sad to see small businesses not make it.
ReplyDeleteToo bad to hear of the closing. I think Media could use a really good bakery or donut shop.
