Media in Twenty Seconds

Media in Twenty Seconds

That's correct, 20 seconds.  New and Improved?  Not quite. I had to shorten things up a bit due to time constraints.

Post Plumstead Inn?
The Last of Media's Neighborhood Bars! John's Grille
How's everyone doing post Plumstead Inn?  I walk by the place every night with Wednesday's being my favorite night to drop in.  This week, it certainly sunk in that the place is now closed and looks to be a former shell of its self.  It'll be interesting to see how long it takes the Brick and Brew, who will be moving in; to re-open the location.  I'd guess they'd want to be open before Dining Under the Stars, but I do know the renovations will be extensive.  Maybe by Fall or the end of the year? I'm sure there will be an update soon.

Victory BrewPub in Media?
If the business development department of Victory Brewing saw the responses to how people feel about bringing a brewpub in Media,  I think they'd seriously entertain it.  Way too early to see what'll shake out here, but it has definitely been generating a ton of excitement.

Chinese New Year Celebration Today!
2016 (Chinese Calendar) represent the Year of the Monkey which will be celebrated on the State Street in Media.  It's a parade of sorts that has become a yearly, Media tradition.  It's about 30 minutes and is done mostly on the side walk of State Street.  Here's footage of the event from last
year.

What's the going rate for a brand new, slightly used public library?
Remember I posed that question last year after Media borough council told us they'd be giving a  $1,000,000 donation and a awkwardly explained loan for $1.5 million  to the Media/UP Library?  To be exact, I asked it on Friday, December 5th (2015 at 3:12p EST).  Well, if you didn't see January's borough council meeting, you probably have no idea how bad this deal is turning out to be.  I'll post a special report on this next week.

No interest rate, no payback schedule, no recourse for non-payment, no due diligence towards payback ability, etc, etc, etc.  When pressed, he did have the solicitor state that the borough would take ownership of the library if the loan wasn’t or couldn’t be paid back – Gee, ya think?.  Not sure what the going rate is for a used library, but this is a bad policy and a bad loan. Period.

  1. Hey Ted. I agree that a more formal arrangement would be better. Maybe its cause my wife works in a library though that I am thinking that whatever a community can do to extend and improve the quality of information available to the community, in particular the young community to whom we rely on to run things beyond our own lives. Kim and I recently took custody of my three grandchildren because their mom has a brain tumor, and the Library has been an invaluable source of information, discovery, and excitement. When I see your note, it makes my wonder, exactly what is a fair interest rate to charge a 10 year old who is losing her mom?

    1. Sean thanks for using your families tragedy to frame your argument. You disgust me.

    2. Sean, what's a fair tax rate to the thousands of people living in Media; some having sick family members of their own to support and some struggling to provide for their families? Libraries are a great asset to the community and should be supported, but those providing the support should have more input and it should be a more open process.

  2. I join Sean in pointing out that the public library is a vital, multi-generational resource. Open evenings and weekends, safe and welcoming for all income levels, lending books, movies, toys and exercise equipment. Leveling the field where computers are vital for educational and career success. And when it brings solace to the grief-stricken, it helps to put this long-term community investment into perspective. We can afford this.

    1. Well "if it brings solace to the grief-stricken" why doesn't Borough Council hand out $1,000,000,000.00 to the local non profit Churches, or even the food pantry, or several of the local hospice organizations? Council picked a pet project (thanks Kent Davidson) and funded it it out of sheer hubris and have left us, the residents holding the bag. Not Fair. Frame this anyway you want it was a poor decision that will become a burden on the residents once it becomes evident the Library will not in anyway be able to afford the payment let alone the cost to operate on a day to day basis without more handouts.
