Law enforcement and first responders do the toughest jobs for us - bravely responding to accidents, fires, crimes and other scenes of chaos with their first thought to serve and protect those in their communities. Paying them $1 more than a part-time gardner is a travesty.

Mayor Bob McMahon and Councilwoman Amy Johnson smile after a motion is passed that gives the shade tree commission a part-time gardener at the rate of $25 per hour. Media Police officers are only given $26 per hour. Media staff and Highway workers, much less.

As for the long time borough staff, highway workers who make less than $25 per hour, you also deserve to be better treated and respected.

  2. Tedman what responsibilities will this "part-time" gardener have the the employees of the Media Highway Dept. could not handle? Don't the Highway employees mulch the trees and flower beds; plant the seasonal flowers ect. if this istrue this sounds like a joke or a VOLUNTEER Position at best.
how many other Media Commission members are paid Zoning? Planning?

  3. Compensation is much more complicated than an hourly wage. You have to consider benefits packages as well. Health insurance alone is a huge component to compensation. Part-time hourly rates can seem inflated compared to hourly rates based on salaries, simply because that employee has to travel from site to site to do that job, but there are no benefits with that wage. Does anyone know if the gardener is receiving benefits? If you don't, then you can't make an accurate comparison to all these other employees' wages.

  4. I don't even think these people knew what they did by hiring a gardener. Don't they know that the highway staff have been doing that for years?
