Recent installation of Speed Radar Display on East 5th Street

Recent installation of Speed Radar Display on East 5th Street
If you’ve noticed a speed radar display on East 5th Street between Monroe and Edgmont Street, and are wondering what it’s for, you’re not the only one.   I’ll take a calculated guess and suggest that it is probably to address the speeding concerns raised by a petition passed around by residents on 5th and 6th streets back in April.  As for a formal explanation from Media's elected officials? Aside from Councilman Paul Robinson whose street this is on, I doubt many of them even know about it.

Not sure what's being done yet for the noticeable stop sign roll throughs, but we'll look into it.

Aside from the obvious (you’re driving too fast), I really don’t know what the objective is of these signs and what enforcement, if any is planned.

Let’s see if we can get anywhere this this:

  1. Will more speed radar displays be placed throughout Media and for how long?  Which streets and when?  (Note: The display on  East 5th street is the same street councilman Paul Robinson lives on.)
  2.  Is this a pilot test or permanent?
  3. Are the Media Police actively involved with these radar readouts and ticketing offenders, or are they just for display?
  4. Any analytics planned?   Ticketing and speeding metrics before and after speed radar displays were installed?
  5. Can these units detect how many cars go by, how many are initially found speeding and decrease speed, how many don’t exceed the speed?
I'll share any information I come across.

  1. Tedman not only is this speed reduction device on the same street as,Councilperson Robinson it is pretty much across the street right in front of his house. Got to love Media Boro Council that love to take care of their own. See abandoned cars both Amy and Lisa Johnson also Brian Hall. See no solicitation for the Mayor buts it's OK for everyone else ect. What a self servingredients group they are.....

  3. What is the accuracy of the device? In other locations, I've seen these say I'm going a full 10mph faster than what my speedometer says.
I'd like to see real, objective measurement of the problem, but not if the numbers may be skewed, then the conclusions will be debatable.
If they're trying to prove a point, one way or the other, then they need one of those boxes with the hoses that get stapled to the street.

  4. The accuracy would be easy enough to measure with a gps device or phone app. I suspect it's within (+/- 1mph). I would, however, like to review the specification of these devices and learn what capabilities they have. (i.e. avg speed per day, vehicle over/under 25mph, etc.)

    1. Your approach presumes GPS and/or phone apps are accurate.

  6. What's the point? I've been here for decades and never witnessed anyone 'speeding' down the streets of Media- how can you? There's a STOP sign at almost every intersection with a Media cop cruising around-looking for an opportunity to ticket citizens if you don't stop long enough to eat a doughnut and drink a coffee while at the STOP sign... take it down...we are all living here and are responsible citizens within our community- we don't need BIG BROTHER watching over us- there are Bigger Issues going on- put our tax dollars to work there...

  7. You must live in "Media" aka Upper Providence. You obviously don't live in the heart of the borough like on Orange, Olive, Monroe, Third, Fourth Fifth, etc streets.... I can take a video of speeders on any random day and post it for you.
