Do we separate grain products from meat products, or will food scrap recycling be single stream?

I came across a survey today provided by Media Borough soliciting recommendations on a possible food scrap recycling program. Honestly, I thought it was a joke.   Is this some kind of solution to a problem that doesn't even exist?  Or more precisely solutionism?  With everything else going on in the borough this is their focus? Really!!!  Apparently, they've been working on it for months!

Forget about the incurred costs for such a program, local government bureaucracy, ancillary issues (i.e. rats, stench, cleanliness, wasted fuel to implement, pollution), or even a legitimate need; and look at what's really happening in Media that deserves attention.

  • Olive Street Garage needing repair for the second time in two years.  Yet no one on borough council took responsibility for signing off on the first repair or recourse for funds spent.
  • An increasing "Crime Culture" as reported by Mayor Bob McMahon this year who is called out for not being prepared and forgetting to give safety report.
  • A shootout that occurred on 6th Street three weeks ago. Yet no update or followup.
  • The incident on Third Street just last week.
  • A bridge that has been in disrepair for almost twenty five years, while better access to Media is needed more than ever to alleviate congestion (i.e. West End Flats, Hampton Inn).
  • The increase in treated sewage (2.2 million Gallons per Day) Media's putting into Ridley creek.
  • Parking - Has there been any vision shared on improvements in parking within the borough? Any?  How about a new or expanded garage in the borough the county is interested in?
  • Development. What's Media's elected officials' vision for continued development in the borough?  Not the comprehensive plan that a handful of people participated in, but THEIR assessment.
  • Finacial cost for new projects: Plum Street Mall, Veteran's Square, Media Library, etc.
  • Lack of communication to residents and businesses on ALL OF THE ABOVE.

I could go on and on, but it always comes down to the same problems: lack of oversight, lack of accountability, lack of order/leadership and individual agendas.

Do we separate grain products from meat products, or will food scrap recycling be single stream?

  3. Nothing more than a well played hoax, according to Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/?s=Media+Food+Scraps

    Too asinine to be real.

  4. Just the kind of agenda item you'd expect from those with too much time on their hands. Squeezed in between watching their hair grow and rearranging the placemats...

  5. Thank you for the link, I'm now going to respond to the survey and indicate my support for this idea, and I'll share with my neighbors. Really, composting is not that crazy. Your neighbors are already doing it at home. Not everyone has the capacity to do it, though (e.g., apartment dwellers).

And if you honestly think you have solved the crime of the 6th St. shooting, or know who the suspicious person is from the 3rd and Monroe incident, please say so. And as for the other matters, how about a real proposal for what to do, rather than just complaining? There has not been a viable opposition to the current party for several years, and no one even ran for borough council in the primary this year. I think you'd find that Media voters would be interested in voting for other candidates and ideas if they were reasonable and not simply complaints.

  6. Media has a problem with one-party rule that is becoming an issue for the borough. They won't question one another, they won't question what's going. Can't one of them report on public safety issues that occurred over the last month and whether or not they are still being investigated, closer to being solved, or just stalled? Can't one of them walk into Chief Wusinick's office and ask those very same questions in the capacity of a public official? Are they scared?

    1. Quit complaining about one-party rule. One-party rule is just fine. RTMSD School Board and Delaware County Council are the way they should be. And if Media borough one day has one-party rule (the other party that is) then it will be just fine too.

  7. Apparently, President Hall's neighbor is leading and promoting the table scraps effort. Check out the everybody's hometown FB page.

You just can't make this stuff up. Individual agendas at the expense of the boro.

  8. Hate has NO HOME HERE....
.apparently neither do food scraps. Media Borough Council could write for Larry David. This seems like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. SMH....100% believe this will be implemented in the near future.

    1. By the way if media borough directed their food scraps / trash to landfills that capture the methane and generate electricity this so called program would cost nothing
Composting food scraps would generate more greenhouse gases
So not sure what the borough is trying to pull over on people

    2. Given your attitude and general outlook, I find it amazing you still choose to have a home here.

      https://wihresourcegroup.wordpress.com/2009/12/26/composting-gases-vs-landfill-methane-gas-does-it-really-make-a-difference-wih-resource-group/

"Landfill methane is a gas that is produced in a landfill because the things in the landfill undergo anaerobic decomposition. Basically, this means that because municipal solid waste that is buried in a landfill does not receive oxygen, it will produce methane.

A compost pile, on the other hand, undergoes aerobic decomposition. Because it is exposed to oxygen, either by turning it or through the use of worms and other living organisms, it produces CO2 (carbon dioxide) instead of methane."

  11. When I was growing up we called them leftovers. Most liberals don't teach their kids responsibility. Their kids grow up being lazy pieces of crap because they are allowed to always get their way and are always rewarded participation trophies.

  14. Great news that Media Borough is interested in composting! At the end of the survey you can sign up to be part of a pilot program. Contrary to the bewildered attitude expressed here by conservatives, a municipal composting service fits perfectly with Media's educated, progressive populace! There are in fact many environmental and community benefits to recycling food waste into nutrient rich soil for home and business use -- but I will leave it to those unfamiliar to look into it for themselves. Thanks for the otherwise useful information relating to Media.

    Yours truly,

    A Resident

  15. Complaining about trophies is usually done by the guy who didn't get picked for kick ball.Another paranoid conservative, I guess not saying Merry Christmas is the reason so many parish churches are closing or merging.I guess we should do away with varsity letters too?Nothing more than a cloth participation trophy.I consider myself a liberal and both my kids worked hard in school went on to get great jobs as a result.I could show you a few shit hole homes that look like dumps sporting Trump signs.I guess cutting grass and clearing junk from your property was a value their lazy ass parents didn't teach them.

  16. I can show you entire shit hole cities with most parts being no-go zones at the expense of failed liberal policies. I guess hard work, sound judgement, basic decency and self responsibility were values the liberals weren't interested in.

You can mock religion all you want. But it did and still does to some extent provide and advocate a crucial foundation: The greatest privilege in American society is growing up in a two parent household.

  17. While I'm not against composting
It's not something that borough funds should be paying for- you want to compost buy a bin for $50-$85 and have fun while it keeps some volume of waste from landfills it does produce CO2 a greenhouse gas the result being you get some good organic material to amend your soil with but CO2 is still produced The borough shouldn't be trying to charge anything for this program 3200 residents at full participation isn't going to move the needle
