New structure built to hold war memorial plaques as wall to be opened up for outdoor access and seating

State Street Memorial Wall of Honor

  1. My apology for introducing a topic unrelated to the Wall of Honor which looks quite impressive.

I don’t think that residents are aware that the Borough is allowing the Media Farmer’s market to reopen in a new location this April thru November. That is on Edgemont Street between Front and State Streets. Borough Council approved a mass gathering permit in March without any notification or consultation with local residents. In fact this is being organized and run by the same non-profit that ran it previously.

As before, there are no sanitary facilities available for the market. Some of the previous vendors have not been invited back and are very upset about that. Apparently you have to be a member of City to Farm to participate as a vendor.

This also creates new noise and traffic issues and street closure in an area that is already overtaxed with softball, parades and Super Sundays. Their permit provides for the hours 8 AM to 2 PM. So conceivably we could have trucks unloading and setting up a 6 AM Sunday mornings. Neighbors I have spoken with find this unacceptable, especially on the one day of the week which is currently “unscheduled” in that neighborhood. There is also concern about a PA system playing on Sunday mornings.

The Borough’s website has no current information and has not been updated since 2014. It seems that the Borough wants this to appear as not a Borough event but something that the non-profit is running. So who will be managing and policing the market? Did anyone really think this through?

    1. Anon 11:42. You are screwed. Amy runs the "market" Amy is the Vice President of Borough Council. Best you can do is make some extra money renting out your bathroom on Market Sunday Mornings. Media Borough Council a government made up of residents who will always put themselves first.

    2. There are, in fact, bathrooms at the ball field on Edgemont - it is where I have taken my kids for an emergency pit stop when visiting the Farmers Market in the past.

    3. And the Media Farmers Market FB page was soliciting applications for vendors in March. https://www.facebook.com/mediafarmersmarket/

I can understand the other concerns (noise, etc.) but the bathroom and vending concerns, I'm not really seeing.

  2. I am a neighbor in that area and I an OK with it. I actually think this is a great spot for it that addresses a lot of the issues that people had with the old spot. There is a lot of parking on front and on edgemont itself. Parking will not be as much of an issue since people don't spend hours at a farmers market like they do for other events like DUTS or Super Sunday. There are in and out much quicker.

I am in 100% agreement with you about the sanitary facilities. I would strongly advocate for the organizing committee to provide facilities for venders and patrons and I would go so far as to oppose the market unless they prove these facilities.

But if the facilities are provided, i am fine with the location and I live closer to this specific location than 98% of the borough.

Listen - -if you are against the market, you are against the market. If you are against the borough government, you are against the borough government. No placement of the market (or any other decision they make) is going to appease you. But speaking from someone who has this location literally in backyard, we also have to be careful about appearing too close to the Glen Providence/3rd St Bridge NIMBYs who oppose anything too close to their dwellings.

The new location for the market is great. Regulate for the noise/set up concers, address the membership issue and provide sanitary facilities. All solvable and addressable.

    1. Another future neighbor of the market here and also very excited about it! Would more transparency be useful, sure, but lets build on a good thing instead of immediately grumbling.

  3. Where is the new WAR MEMORIAL going to be moved to? This wall has been here for at least 25 years to honor our war veterans. Every time that I pass it, I run my finger across the embossed names that that are there, THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE, and say a little prayer.

    1. It is being pivoted 90 degrees to open up the area for what sounds like a great new location for spending time with family and friends. My grandfather/veteran would have been thrilled to see a space open up that both commemorates veterans and allows for general merriment!

  4. The Media Farmers market was totally mismanaged the first time. Not seeing anything that would be any different this go around. As a vendor who went through this two years ago, come see us at Swarthmore.

  5. I think Media should place the names of its retired police officers and Life Members of the fire company on the wall, like other towns do.
