Delco County Council offers up $700k in "Green" grants

As reported by Media Patch, Delco County Council is offering up attractive grant money for going green.

"The municipal grant program makes available a total of $700,000 to be distributed to municipalities through two types of grants, prescriptive and custom," Council Vice-Chair Christine Fizzano Cannon said during Tuesday’s council meeting. "The goal is to help municipalities assess their energy needs and achieve energy-saving measures in their buildings."

Media and County Council Make Delco Greener!

County Council is not only an advocate of open space, but is making an impact on the recycling front too.   Initiated this month, the county now allows for "Single Stream" collection through igloo, domed shaped receptacles placed in 41 locations throughout the county.

Per Media Town Talk County initiates single stream recycling:
County Council Vice President Christine Fizzano Cannon made the announcement and deferred to county Recycling Manager Susan Cordes to report on the details. The environmental and financial benefits of recycling are already embraced by county residents, but eliminating the need for separate containers and sorting is apt to have a positive impact, county officials agreed.
Media Boro is also leading the way in recycling having received four  Big Belly Solar trash compactors provided by the work of Council President, Pete Alyanakian and State Rep. (168th) Tom Killion.

Media Boro. Roads in Good Shape after 3.5" of Snow #delcosnow

Media Borough roads are in fine shape and passable after 3.5" of snow fell over night.  Having had temperatures above freezing before the snow helped a lot with lessening the typical ice/snow packed base.

Rose Tree Media schools have enacted a two hour delay.

Congrats to New Media Borough Committee Appointments

Congratulation to Paul Cavanagh, Ryan Pileggi, Vincent Pennoni and Joan Hagan for their appointments to the selected committees consisting of Zoning, Planning, and Vacancy.

The political bickering unfortunately is nothing new in this town, however, it was nice to see these appointments made by both democrats and republicans.  Bi-partisan cooperation is a much needed change.

In the last 7 months, grant money has been awarded for the third street bridge repair and the Brandywine CVB is now financially participating in marketing Media as a destination within South East Pa.  Leadership counts and so do results!

For a fair assessment of last week's Borough Council meeting, Media Patch provides a great perspective.

Granite Run Mall Delinquent On Mortgage Payments

There's been a lot of fervor surrounding the present and future fate of the Granite Run Mall.  WSJ reports the owners can no longer support the debt.

The Simon-Macerich venture requested to negotiate with the special servicer handling the mortgage about “the potential short sale of the property or the orderly transition of the property to the lender,” Realpoint said.

A Simon representative declined to comment. Macerich Chief Executive Art Coppola said during the company’s earnings call last week that Granite Run “most likely will not be owned by that joint venture a year from now.”

Septa contributes $$$ to help remove snow banks on State St.

At last night's borough workshop meeting the issue of the Media trolley and it's inability to transverse snow packed State Street was addressed.  Septa, in conjuction with Media's Highway Dept., has offered to pay as much as $3,000 to have the snow removed along the business district.

The work will start tomorrow at 4am and be completed later that day.  A third party trucking company will be used to haul away the snow to be dumped on a vacant Media Real Estate lot.

A big THANKS to Media Real Estate for helping out the community.

Media's Trolley Replaced by Buses on State Street Due to Snow Banks

A few trolley riders have told me that the Media 101 trolley coming through downtown Media has been temporarily replaced by buses due to the narrowing of State Street caused by snow banks.  Apparently there was a traffic incident last week that led to this decision by SEPTA.  It's not clear how long this change will last, but does explain the reason for the missing trolley.

New SEPTA Silverliner V Trains Seen at Media Station

Silverliner V at Media Station
It's been almost 40 years since new trains rolled down the Media/Elwyn R3 line;  but today that changed and the new SEPTA Sliverliner V's were seen sitting idle at the Media Station.

The first thing you'll notice is that the seating layout is different with better accomodations for wheel chairs and bicycles.  Secondly, the electronic displays, both internal and external,  are a welcomed feature showing route, location and time.

Entrance doors are located a quarter of the way in providing quick entry/exit and shorter pickup/drop off times.  Sorry, still no beverage car, but the Media/Elwyn line is proposed to be extend out to the Wawa area in the coming years.  In fact, work has already begun and can be seen in the Lenni and Middletown sections.

Media, Pa under thin glaze of ice #delcosnow

With more adverse weather on the way, Media is currently dealing with a very light mist and a glaze of ice on almost everything.  You'll probably be doing more ice scraping that snow shoveling, but slow down.  Rose Tree Media School district has and will be delayed by two hours.
