Media had its own Philly Car share vehicle available on
Veteran’s Square about three years ago.
Problem was, no one really used it and I’m not sure why. It’s a great concept and from what I
understand, very affordable. The car designated for Media during that time was a red Toyota Prius with it's own reserved parking spot. From what I'm told the online scheduling is easy and hassle free.
Over the last few years, perceptions appear to have improved
regarding car share rentals and the convenience they can provide. I know people in urban areas who use them
regularly, but would they work in Media? Is there enough of a demand in the surrounding area that this service could be reconsidered? What about an electric car? We have the charging station behind the firehouse.
I know the major companies like Zipcar and Philly Car share have their analytics and projections for specific markets, but I still think this is too good of a idea to not explore further. Perhaps a 90 day demo could be worked out to see what type of interest there is.
Take the poll.
I wonder how many Borough residents do not own a car. Even though the town is convenient to public transportation, one probably requires access to a vehicle for certain errands where public transit is not an option. If one or two parking spots were dedicated to a car share I think it would be a good idea to locate those spots next to the charging station.

Why worry about negative? It's not like we're disucssing the 3rd street project. If you want negative, you should mention parking the shared car on the 3rd street bridge. Then we'd all go wild!
DeleteI think it's a good idea. I wouldn't plan on using it, but I'm sure many folks would.
DeleteI'll only oppose it if it has to come with a mixed-use office/parking garage at the Media Inn site.
DeleteI used the Philly Car Share when it was located on Veterans about once a month. I was sorry to see it go.
