Media in Two Minutes

Media Supports the Suicide Prevention Foundation:
Benefit for Suicide Prevention
Media is at its best when it helps each other.  The true spirit of Media and the one thing that is unique to this town, is that people look after one another.  And that's exactly why it's called Everybody's Hometown.

We had a great example of that yesterday for an event that was held at Joclyn's to raise awareness for suicide prevention.  Jenn and her group did a great job with this, which showed by the huge turn-out.  Great music by the Broozers, Prisoners and 80s punk band Decontrol.  If you've ever heard of the Birch brothers, you know what I'm talking about.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the nation’s leading organization bringing together people across communities and backgrounds to understand and prevent suicide, and to help heal the pain it causes. Individuals, families, and communities who have been personally touched by suicide are the moving force behind everything we do.

Why so many banks in Media?
99% of all my banking is done on line, as I suspect that's true for many others too.  That includes deposits, bill pays, transfers, reconciliation and savings.  In fact most of it can be smartphoned in with recent abilities to photograph a check and deposit instantaneously.  Essentially, a smartphone has become it's own bank branch! Oh, and if you're looking for one of the better online banking experiences, PNC has a great one.

Yet you wouldn't know that with all the bank buildings and services here in Media.  Being the county seat has a lot to do with that, but are bank branches becoming a thing of the past?  It would be interesting to see how much in tax base these banks contribute to Media.

Media VFW - Best Breakfast in Town
I've been saying for a few months that the best breakfast in town is served at the local VFW here in Media.  For $8 ($4 for kids), you can get an all-you-can-eat feast served homestyle.  It only occurs on the last Sunday of each month, so mark you calendars.

I don't know for sure if people took me up on this when the announcement was made a few weeks ago, but last Sunday the VFW had over 100 people attend their Sunday breakfast.  They haven't had that many people in a long time.  So, now I'll be volunteering at 4am Sunday morning each month to help setup.

Watch Out for Motocycles, Scooters and Bikes!
I get the "walking" thing about Media, but I don't undersand why there aren't more bikes.  A few  people do ride them, but not a whole lot.  The only thing there is less of than bicyclist are electric cars and we even have our own charging station for that.
Sting-ray

For the other vehicles out there which seems to include a growing number of scooters; pay attention when driving on State Street, as that's your biggest chance for an accident.  Whether it's someone opening a car door, or a car pulling out and not seeing you; it's dicey on State Street.

What's going on in Media for the US Open?
The short answer: I have no idea!  One of the biggest tourist attractions is happening in the area in a few weeks, and I've seen not advertisements, brochures or useful announcements on what Media is doing for this.  There is a play being done by local resident Art Leahy, but I've not seen much more than what he's provided to me.  Apparently there is suppose to be a street festival of some kind during that week, but there's been no formal word.

Media Taxpayers pay $20,000 to hear Terry Bradshaw
The hype over Media's $20,000 video has come and gone.  Forget about seeing this on TV, unless you happen to be awake in Clarkesville, Indiana at 8am on Sunday morning.  Then again, that might be too big of a market for this video.

Plain and simple: Media, PA got ripped off by our own borough council for a video that never went out to bid and was produced by a company who was shady to begin with.  Yet the lack of accountability by Mayor McMahon and Borough Council can only lead me to believe they'll probably do a sequel.  Start saving, taxpayers!

  1. I don't get all the negativity regarding the $20,000 video. Thought it was pretty professional and complimentary. Yeah, it would have been cool if Terry Bradshaw showed up and walked around State Street with an entourage. And would be cool if they aired the video on national TV at prime time. But the video was only $20,000. Let's get real; that's veritable chump change. The incident in FL might have been one isolated blemish among possibly hundreds?? of entries. And lastly, hypothetically if the borough made a mistake they probably deserve the benefit of a doubt. Reminds me of Aesop's fable The Man and His Donkey: sometimes one needs to be steadfast amongst the din of criticism.

  2. The RTM school district and the county council were happy with the video. The boroughs contribution was$5000 not $20,000! Tell us how you're going to bring in more business to Media and less banks! !

    1. Happy with the video? By any standard, it was junk. And they know it. Just trying to play nice, especially since it's the taxpayers' monies.

    2. The fact that multiple government bodies paid for this unbudgeted project that was illegally negotiated by the Mayor just implicates those entities in a whimsical decision based on absolutely zero empirical evidence that the video had even the remotest potential to benefit anybody.

    3. Isn't all the same taxpayer dollars anyway?

  3. You know, it just couldn't be "Media in two minutes" without yet another repetition of one of the many nonsensical politicized rants we've all read at least five times before. Are we all sick of that yet?

  4. Somebody needs to remind the mayor of the very limited authority of a mayor in a borough in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  5. This council clearly has no idea what they are doing. They'd had been better off not even releasing that video.

  7. I saw the video...it really wasn't that bad. Am I missing something?

    1. It wasn't that great either, but it is supposed to be some type of crime because Democrats are behind it. They're actually so tricky that they fooled the silly Republicans on County Council into appearing on it as well.

    2. I don't hate the video. I simply question the authority of the mayor to negotiate any contract (he is not authorized under state law) and the fiscal discipline of our elected officials during the worst economic times any of us have ever seen.... Not to mention the lack of any reasonable evidence that even the greatest video could benefit anybody.

    1. Here's a novel idea: reduce taxes. There is a $60 operating budget contingency every year. That's ludicrous. It's insulting that Council feels it is appropriate for a government entity to take more money than it needs to operate. Just wait till bargaining time. The labor unions rightly will stake their claim to that money. I say reduce taxes before that happens.
