BREAKING: N. Orange Street Between Media and Upper Prov Closed Due to Sink Hole

N. Orange Closed Due to Sink Hole
UPDATE: 5:00pm EST - Penndot expects to have sink hole fixed and road opened, as soon as this Friday 7/19 barring any major damage or weather delays.

The Media Police have confirmed that  N. Orange Street between Media and Upper Providence has been closed due to a sink hole.   A steel plate has been placed over the small bridge by the Hickory Valley development, but the thoroughfare has been deemed impassable.  No information yet on the extent of the damage, next steps or time to repair.

It would have been great to have had Third Street Bridge repaired in order to alleviate congestion and inconvenience, but after 18 years and money to repair the bridge, Media Borough Council fails to do so.

  1. Lets hope this town does not abandon this road just like they did 3rd street. Perhaps that is what the borough wants, to isolate the town from outsiders.

Having another road open, yes like 3rd street, would come in really handy while this is out for service.....oh wait, what am I thinking. This road won't be fixed. We will be talking about Orange street for the next 16 years while the borough tries to make the right decisions on how to allocate the funds to repair it.

The Frogs are already putting their action committee together on how to present their plan for turning this into green space. I think I saw Kent and Paul having breakfast together with the other croakers (frogs from Parks Edge lane)this morning.

  3. There was a problem with a bridge on this stretch of Orange St that occurred around the same time as the 3rd St bridge was closed. They had it repaired within a week. Hopefully the same holds true this time. Also, I believe this stretch of Orange St is owned by PenDot, so the Borough may not have any say in how quickly or long it takes to have it repaired.

  4. 3rd Street Bridge will remain as is so long as certain members of the political party in control continue to live there and want the lack of traffic to remain. It is not about tree huggers/open space, walkers and cyclists, funding, future maintenance; rather, it is all about VERY LOCAL traffic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. Doesn't Councilman Davidson and former Boro President Daly live right at the foot of the third street bridge. No wonder Davidson is so vocal.

Anon 10:13 - I agree with you 100%. They have wisely made it about a bunch of other things but when it comes down to it most of the FROGS are full of it. They think so highly of themselves and feel they know what is best for all. They make for bad neighbors and in my opinion are the worst kind of "do gooders". If you live on Parks Edge Lane and now want to act like you care about the park you are a fraud at best. Do as I say not as I do should be the motto of a few of the members.

  5. Stop everything! Lets form a CAC filled with FROGS to study this one!

  6. I need our town council to post guards around the sink holes in case Morlocks climb out to eat us.

  7. Media's Socialist Party has scheduled a press conference today at 5pm to address the N. Orange Street sink hole while fulfilling their sense of obligation to blame BLCC for Media's latest ordeal. A cocktail reception will follow shortly afterwards to discuss ominous bumper stickers on borough resident cars and why this has become Media's most important election issue.

  8. Apples and Oranges. Those two roadways have little in common. The mammoth difference between a sinkhole and a bridge/dam should be obvious.

    1. tAbsolutely right MediaMike! And I did confirm, Orange St is a state road right on through Media, so repairs will be made by PenDOT. The borough has to get permission from the state to even shut down the intersection of Orange and State St for an event such as Super Sunday.

    2. Yes, major difference. The state doesn't get held back by an inept council when it comes to Orange St, unlike our 17-year temporary bridge closure.

    3. Agreed Steve, but PenDOT has it's issues too. How many years ago was the Rose Tree Tavern relocated for the purposes of widening the road? We are just starting to see plans for it now, and the plans I saw were all about adding a light at the SB US1 ramp, not widening the road at the intersection with Rose Tree Rd.

  9. I've said all along that 17 years without a bridge prices out is unnecessary. I stand corrected. If Orange Street is closed and emergency (fire and rescue) needs to get through, precious seconds, if not minutes, could be lost. With the limited number of volunteer firefighters, pointed out elsewhere on ATM, the bridge could mean the difference between life and death for any of us. My mind is clear now.

    1. One can still can access to the borough via Baltimore Pike and 252. I usually take North Orange to 252 in the morning. Today I used Ridge to get to 252.

      Stop acting like:

      a) We live in Gotham and Bane just took out way into town except one. (Sorry if you've not seen the latest Batman movie)

      and

      b) That your mind wasn't already made up on the matter of 3rd street.

    2. AND... The bridge was always going to be open both ways for emergency vehicles!

  10. Imagine... accident at 252 and Baltimore.... traffic backed up in all directions.... and then, a fire in the Borough. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I had participated in the conspiracy to delay or avoid repairing the bridge. People have been charged with lesser crimes.

    1. Wouldn't the fire company in the borough just drive over to it at that point? Possibly down State or Front or Jefferson?

    2. The volunteer firefighters, many who live outside the Borough, would need to get to the firehouse first.

    3. MM - With regard to fire service, you seem to be out of touch with reality. How many volunteer firefighters do you think live in the Borough? Maybe one engine initially. It takes far more than that --- i.e. mutual aid from outside the Borough --- to fight fire and rescue people quickly and safely. With traffic backed up and limited access to the Borough, we have a real threat to the health and safety of our residents and visitors. But, at least the traffic on certain roads will be limited.

  11. Doesn't take long to repair road when private country club isn't insisting on building a high hazard dam next to public park at taxpayers expense.

    1. You mean the stipulated settlement the borough decided to reinterpret for a group of over entitled NIMBYs? I remember Alyanakian had this project ready to go a couple years ago, such a shame to see it go backwards to the benefit of only a few.

    2. "Fencing Along Third Street Bridge - my favorite useless bridge next to the swim club! This may spar a debate about what to do with said bridge. Want my opinion? Tear the thing down or let Upper Providence pay for repairs! We've lived without it for, what, nearly 10 years now? Why change anything?"

Steve, that's from your "Media's Musings" blog entry dated 10/15/08 (link below). Why the change in position? Or were you just being sarcastic back then? The way I read it, you would have fit right in with the so-called "urban terrorists" you now lambast.

  13. last night it took me a long time to make my left from Balto Pike > Ridley Creek Road. the number of cars sitting on Ridley Creek to turn left on Balto Pike was longer than I've ever seen in my 15 years of living in the trapped neighborhood off Kirk/Highland. And not just the volume is an issue - the idiots turning left in front of traffic to get up the hill was nuts. and this was at 6:45pm.

But is there any kind of traffic control or help there? No. Just the U.P. cops pulling over speeders coming down the hill...

    1. You're right. Upper Providence inserted itself into the Third Street issue because of this turn, but did not support a plan which would have addressed the issue and does not provide traffic control during an emergency.

    2. Upper Providence Police Department has the following items to take care of instead of directing traffic:

      - speed trapping
      - having an off-site staff meeting at the Rose Tree Road / 252 Sunoco
      - speed trapping some more
      - drag racing on Media's streets to hurry up on their way to another speed trap
      - allowing a non-stop spree of home break-ins to take place while they're speed trapping.

    3. There needs to be more accident reports to warrant a traffic control device. We need to stop complaining and start crashing!

  14. Every issue in the borough (i.e. sinkhole on N Orange) does not need to turn into another lame gripe session about the 3rd Street bridge...grow up people.

  15. Reading these comments and conversations I've had with people, there's a heavy burden of suspicion towards this local govt. Even if only half the allegations are true, this is one messed up town.

    1. @ 5:29 The Kent guy is really arrogant and has pissed off a lot of people around town and that is part of what you're seeing people react to. The very first time I encountered him he mouthed off to me and I was merely a bystander in the matter. Charming, eh? But apparently he has friends because he got himself elected. I just gotta laugh at it all.

    2. The thing is, anon 5:29, not anything near half of the allegations actually are true.
