Media in Two Minutes

Penncrest's Scoreboard?
Penncrest Scoreboard?
In the grand sceme of things, this may not rate high, but the Penncrest scoreboard is gone.  Are they putting up a fanavision?  In passing, someone told me something about this, but I can't remember the reason for the change.

Robertson's Barbershop

I wrote about the opening of a new barbershop on N. Olive street a few weeks ago, but can report back that this place is the straight-up, real deal.  I stopped in on Friday and Mark the owner got me in and out very quickly with one of the nicer cuts I've had in awhile.

The lounge atmosphere is nice and something I appreciated too.  Check it out, at $16 a cut, it's one of the best places around.

Double Decker Pizza will be opening SOON!

Not being familiar with what or who Double Decker Pizza was, I took it for granted as being just another pizza place that was coming to Media.  Well, I admit, I was wrong.  Apparently, people drive from Media to their other locations (Ridley Park) because this pizza is that good.  In fact, someone the other night did this very thing to prove it's worthiness.  I didn't have time to stick around to try it out, but this place now has my interest.

I hear it'll be open in the next month or so.  They are located on 400 block of Baltimore Avenue.

Media Fire Company NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Thankfully, I've never had to deal with the Media Fire Company, but I know they are there if needed.  If you have time, please considering volunteering with this group.  They have openings for all kinds of work whether it assisting with fire emergencies or helping in the office.

Media really needs to think how this service will be provided in the future.  If there are dwindling volunteers, will there someday be a need for a paid staff?  A tremendous expense, but one that could be a reality in the coming years.

Fourth of July IS BIG, just not in Media

4th of July Parade
With Media not having a fourth of July parade, I wanted to see what other towns did for this celebration.  While traveling on Thursday, I stopped into Rock Hall, Maryland breifly to check out what they had for this day.  Well, if you get behind Main Street where the parade happens, you're not leaving until it's over, which was my situation.  Anyway, this parade is not just a 10 minute ordeal, it went on for a full hour.

They really take this parade serious with float after float after float.  Any civic or personal achievement worthy of a float, well, gets a float.  This parade draws out everyone and I would imagine one of their biggest events of the year for them.  Heck, you can even drink beer while watching if that's your thing.

Bastille Day in Media

If you're not sitting on a beach in Greece sipping Ouzo, you may want to check out what Media has to offer next week for the town's celebration of Bastille Day.  I wasn't there last year, but this is a well liked, popular event that people really get excited for.

I think the international flair this event provides is a welcomed summer treat for Media.  Definitely check it out, I think people will really like what that have in store for this year.

Media's Farmers Market (Thursday vs Saturday)
In concept and on many other levels, the Media Farmers Market is a great idea; but is it on the wrong day(Thursday)?  I was recently out to see some people in West Chester who showed me what they were doing with their Farmers Market. Theirs is from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays an is located in a municipal parking lot a block back from Market Street.   People come from all over to attend for what I found was a great selection of produce.  Soaps, cheeses, cured meats, breads, flowers/plants, pasta and a great assortment of baked goods.
West Chester's Farmers Market on Saturday

Thursday afternoons may be good for some in Media, but I'd have to guess Saturday's would be better for most.  I still think this the parking lot at N. Olive and Front Street would be better accommodating and centrally located for the town.  This location would be in close proximity to the Plum Street Mall which is always bustling with people on Saturday.

Media's Hotel, Wawa and Bridge = Same Story
Is there any coincidence regarding the confusion and lack of communication by Media Borough council over these three projects?  As for leadership, forget it.  Much like conflict of interest, they don't understand the meaning   When you have a mayor and borough council who can't even come out and give positions or updates on these matters, that's what we as a town get.  Three major issues that will have a big impact on the town, and readers have to come to this blog to get updates that their local eleceted officials fail to provide on a regular basis.  Oh, and you can throw in the issues with the Olive Street parking garage too. If Media Borough claims they are business friendly, they are doing nothing to prove it.

Eitherway, here's what Springfield has been up to with their hotel.  Looks like it might be ready before the end of summer. Also, I've included a shot of what West Chester did with their hotel.

As for Media, there's been some talk, but from what I'm hearing the owners are not as motivated as before.  What's different between Media, as opposed to West Chester and Springfield, is that their elected officials didn't just sit around and wonder what would happen.  They actually engaged the situation.

  1. This location would be ideal for a hotel for business travelers. A hop, skip, and jump away from major roadways and would offer employment opportunities. What a shame!

  2. Takes a brass set... Asking for volunteers to serve while you appear to have plenty of free time to post and monitor this blog... And go to the body building competition, DUTS, 5 mile run party, travel to MD and West Chester ... Lots of fun for a guy beckoning volunteers. Lead by example and you'll get my vote.

    1. He is volunteering. You don't thing it takes time to put this blog together and raise awareness about what is happening in town? I don't always agree with him, (sorry, Tedman, but you already knew that!), but he is very civic minded and involved.

  3. The hotel faces the same issue as the bridge..NIMBYS whining about traffic.
God bless our fire company volunteers.Had a fire at my place a few years back..professionals all the way saved many of my personal items..too old to join but kudos o our great volunteers....

    1. That's ridiculous, anon 9:43. The "issue" with the hotel is entirely different from the issue with the dam/bridge. The hotel has an approved plan, and the developer can and will proceed at whatever rate they choose. The dam/bridge is held up in court for the thirteenth year straight because BLCC still wants to call ALL the shots while paying for nothing. Big difference!

  4. I like the idea of moving the Farmers Market to Front Street on Saturday - more parking and centrally located. Maybe participants already had Saturday events scheduled?

  5. Tedman,do you have any idea why the hotel is still in limbo? I didn't think so! Financing the project nothing to do with council!

  6. I believe the PTG raised money to buy a new scoreboard for Penncrest and it should be installed by the end of the summer. I would also like it if the Farmer's Market were moved to Saturday morning. I find Thursday afternoons inconvenient and would be able to go more often if it were Saturday mornings.

  7. Since the hotel has decided not to move forward, perhaps the space could be a "public" resource. Several communities have Purple Heart donation sites at highly viisible intersections. Combine it with weekly shredding or other reduce, reuse recycle initiatives. Some green space might be nice for a gateway into Media.

    1. Who is going to pay for that?

  8. Maybe we could ask West Chester and Aston:

"We are proud Aston has been selected to be home to the first GreenDrop Charitable Donations Center,” said Paula Turnbach, Aston Township Code Officer. “This new way to donate to our beloved veterans while helping our community ‘Go Green’ is a perfect fit for Aston and we look forward to this location contributing in so many positive ways.”

Maybe the old clinic could be housing for veterans, seniors, etc.

    1. Maybe YOU should make it happen. Of course, our fire company can't get enough volunteers, so maybe that would be a better place to start with your philanthropic efforts.

  9. The shortage of volunteer firefighters will be the next huge financial crisis in Pennsylvania. If and when they ever solve the pension finding crisis, they'll need to figure out how to fund paid fire departments across the state. And it will be sooner than you think.

  10. Anon 631, I'm pretty sure fire service is the responsibility of local municipalities, per state law. So it may be a widespread challenge, but providing a funding source for firefighting is not a problem for the state. Rather, the Borough should be developing a strategy now for providing fire service in the future.

  11. When was the last time anyone saw all the Media Fire Company trucks out of the station at the same time...for a fire, parade or anything else?? It doesn't happen anymore because there aren't enough volunteers. It's the same in neighboring municipalities, as well. Why not sell some of the apparatus and use the proceeds as seed money for a paid firefighter. This is the Borough's legal responsibility. Will it take a tragedy for our elected officials to take action?

  12. A portion of the financing for the PHS Scoreboard was the "class gift" from the 2013 graduating class.

  13. When will Penncrest get into the 21st century and get turf? Went to see my neighbor's football game last year. As a taxpayer in this school district, the field was embarrassing.

    1. Taxes are intended to support the "common good". Please explain how turf fields achieve that goal.

      Delete
    2. Actually turf fields are much less costly to maintain, and have been shown to decrease the severity of certain types of injuries sustained by athletes who play on grass vs. turf.
Yes, the installation cost is hefty, but the 'common good' would be the safety of the athletes playing on it.
Now, trying to get that initiative past the crackpots who show up at your typical school board meetings bitching about anything and everything RTMSD does is the bigger problem...........

  14. The entire community can use the turf, it's cost-efficient over ten years. The stadium field has too many events to hold up over a year; I would not mind paying another $20 a year if they installed turf. Unfortunately the crazies who show up at school board meeting just want to complain about every penny spent, and that is why Rose Tree lags behind so many of their counterpart districts. It's always politics, never progress.

I have an idea if you don't like it: Move. It should be about doing what is right the kids, not personal agendas or politics. The kids are the "common good."

    1. I didn't realize the School District was considering turf fields. Not that my opinion matters, I don't believe turf fields benefit 100% of the community (i.e.the "common good"). If those who would utilize turf fields believe they're only going to cost $20 per taxpayer, then perhaps it would be more equitable to pay for that cost with a user fee rather than taxes. Just a thought.
