Media in Two Minutes

A special thanks this week to the Media VFW.  I was invited down there to help with their Sunday breakfast buffet they had last weekend.  It's quite a daunting task to cook made-to-order omelets there on the spot with a line of people in front of you.  I probably cooked 50 or so, which wasn't so bad once everything was dialed in.  Thanks!

Ok, Let's Go.

Is N. Orange Street Really Fixed?
A couple weeks ago N. Orange street was closed due to a sink whole.  Intrigued, I took a walk down there to see what exactly was done and how the repair worked was conducted. I wasn't surprised to see asphalt patch work done on top of the road; however, I was shocked to see the shoddy work done underneath.  How bad is it, if the walls of the tunnel have to be held up with 2x4's and a discarded metal road sign?

The West End - Beer Garden?
If a portion of Olive Street can be closed for a movie night, as done by Dos Gringos and Ariano's, than perhaps the west end of town (west of Orange St.) should consider this too.  There are some residents and businesses concerned this side of State Street doesn't get a lot of traffic.  I agree, so here's an idea:  consider doing a beer garden night (Friday?) that closes of this side of State Street.  With Desert Rose, Three Sons Hot Dogs, Buddy's, Sassy Girl, and Orvis, you could draw a lot of traffic to this area.  People are always looking to congregate outside in groups.

Riddlewood Swim Club 5k - Today!
Best of luck to the runners today who are competing in the Riddlewood 5k run.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the event turned out.  The run begins at 10:30am.

Residents go to ATM for issues!
When I have time, I do what I can to report on power outages that often happen here in Media.  Lately we had a few lengthy ones that I contacted PECO about.  The outages were eventually fixed, but it looks like there are other issues on resident's minds.  One of which is a street light out in front of Sligo's on State Street.  Someone came up to me on Friday and said they didn't know who to go to, so they wanted to let me know. Okay, so if anyone from the Highway Dept. is reading, please take a look.

A couple months ago borough council announced a program where you could take a picture of an issue (i.e. cracked sidewalk) with your smartphone and submit it to them to be fixed. The program was so poorly explained and communicated by borough council, it never really took off.  Or maybe so many people submitted pictures of the Third Street Bridge, that they haven't been able to catch up yet.

Granite Run Mall - What's Next?
That's a multi-million dollar question that may be decided soon.  I've heard a lot of rumors this week, but I honestly don't know much other than there is modest interest by at least one buyer.  I'm not so sure this will remain as a mall in it's current configuration, but perhaps something different.  Time will tell and perhaps soon.

A perception problem for Media?
If I had to walk to Chester, PA everyday, or even once, I'd say in no way is Media close to Chester.  However, I overhead a group at last week's DUTS saying that their friends don't come to Media because they thought it was too close to Chester.  I'm not going to get into the reasons for this correlation, but if you read the Daily Times, you'll get a good understanding. It's not what I like to hear, but candid feedback is sometimes the best.

Media is missing a great opportunity in failing to capture the success of DUTS and the essence of this business community.  Shooting a professionally produced 30 second video of this night to capture the vibe, energy and people having a good time would do wonders towards marketing this town and building a positive perception.  They could run this on a host of social media sites and regional news and tourism outlets.  I'm sure a lot of local businesses would be thrilled to show it on their sites too.

Thanks to readers who stop by.
I marveled when a thousand people would visit this blog a month, astonished when that many came by weekly, and now humbled to have that many visit in one day.   For those who'd like to write their own articles here, I'm still trying to figure that out.  We will see, but thanks for stopping by.

  1. If anyone is ignorant enough to think "Media is too close to Chester," they can stay at home with their doors locked and windows shut. They probably read the paper and see bylines of "Media" when there are stories of trials of people who are from Chester.

Does this kind of thinking even need to be addressed? One group of people overheard at Dining Under the Stars showing how ignorant they are, and now there should be some movement to differentiate Chester from Media. Google freakin' Maps people.

  2. WHY TO GO, TEDMAN. YOU DON'T CENSOR ON YOUR BLOG, NOT EVEN CRITICISM OF YOURSELF.

    1. Just because you haven't been censored don't assume it doesn't happen to others. You really have no way of knowing if someone was censored.

  3. People who don't come to Media because they think it is too close to Chester are uninformed morons who should stay away. Most nights we can't even get a table at Little Anthony's for DUTS so they must be doing something right. We don't need or want snobs like that.

  4. I will say this...When SEPTA started running bus lines from Chester to the Granite Run Mall a long time ago, that was the beginning of the end for that mall. Yes,it didn't happen overnight, but it was definitely a factor.

  5. i've never heard anyone locally say that but when people from out of town come to visit, a couple have said that they didnt realize i lived that close to chester, based on their maquest map i guess.

  6. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that Media is the county seat. And I agree somewhat with Anonymous about Granite Run, but they missed an important factor. When Granite Run mall opened there were NO OTHER malls in the vicinity....now you have so many within a 5 mile radius of Media, they all have mostly the same stores, so why travel all the way to Granite Run?

  8. As long as Media doesn't become Manayunk or Olde City, fine with me...I'd be more worried about drunk college kids in their cars than honest sober folks taking a bus.

  9. Tedman, is there any reason State St. Traffic lights do not turn to flashing from 11PM to 700AM?There was a time when this was done. It would save gas etc. I suggested this to then Councilman Derickson. He looked at me as if I asked him to throw a child from a moving car.Perhaps Fri or Saturday could be excluded but Sunday to Thursday would work.

  10. Hi Tedman. I really enjoy reading your blog. Thanks for posting!

A few of my friends and I were out Friday night and there was a plethora of noisy motorcyclists driving down State Street. It was a huge nuisance to anyone trying to enjoy a nice night outside... and about as annoying as those snaps at DOTS. Please help!

    1. Let me get this straight, you want to stop motorcycles from driving down State Street? Are you for real? If you are that bothered by the noise of motorcycles then you should just stay at home...

    1. Kent(Frog)Davidson is the most regressive person to ever sit on Media Borough Council. He is against the 3rd Street Bridge that the RTM School Board wants opened. His blog is a propaganda joke.

    2. Yes, Davidson must be the only guy in town to be against that project. And you, anon 11:58, must be the only person in town who STILL doesn't get it that the problem is with the dam, not the "bridge".... You're a little regressive yourself!!

    1. It's a State Road call PennDOT!

    2. That entire stretch of Orange Street is in bad shape. The dip, the bad repair on the bridge and the ruts and potholes make for an adventure especially at night with oncoming traffic. Just trying to avoid all of it would make a cop think you were DUI.

  13. PennDOT deserves a lot more credit than they're getting here. The problem is how underfunded they are, and how vast their job is--stuff like Orange Street happens all across the state. That said, is there anyone here on ATM who can possibly think they're going to build a new dam to put Third Street on top of? If so, please explain how / why!

    1. It is very possible. The money is already allocated for the replacement of the dam and the rebuilding of the roadway. Spin it anyway you want to but the Stipulation Order plainly states this and once the Commonwealth court puts the 2011 Stipulation Order back in force (most likely this fall or early winter) this is exactly what will be done by Penn dot----a replaced dam and roadway.
All the frogs and indorf are doing is delaying the inevitable but right and truth will prevail.

      Delete
    2. Anon 12:59 makes it sound so simple: We can just sue somebody!!

The money that has been "allocated" doesn't actually exist at this point. If you're referring to the "80%" PennDOT funds, they've "allocated" less than half the money it will take to build a dam--although the $1.4 million they have budgeted WOULD be enough to replace dam with a culvert and bebuild the road. That is, if PennDOT's budget doesn't get slashed by the legislature, which is all but assured at this point. No spin about it! And if you're referring to the RACP grant for $650K, it's going to be next to impossible for the borough to actually get that money in any case because of Swim Club antics.

The "Stipulation Order" is no longer an order, and the chances of it being reinstituted on appeal are even slimmer than the chances of getting the court to find the borough in contempt for making the road one-way. Legal genius at work on that one, once again! But the problem that could arise is if the Stipulation Order was to be restored, the borough would get 'left holding the bag' by being obligated to building a dam that the State isn't going to pay for, or would only partially pay for.

Other problems include getting PennDOT to fund an ownerless project and getting the DEP to issue permits to an ambiguous, litigious and irresponsible ownership trio with a long track record of problems. There is no other such dam in the State, and this one's been nothing but a problem. Add to that the facts that no one wants to pay for or even own a Dam that isn't needed and isn't wanted and the fact that the Swim Club has zero political clout at the State level and see what you come up with.

The inevitable that is being delayed here is coming up with a reasonable, sensible and fundable plan to solve this situation once and for all. If anybody has any ideas on that, please speak up!!

    3. Can not wait to drive across new roadway in 2015 and make a u turn on Kirk and drive back into Media after Commonwealth court rules Media in contempt of Stipulation and Judge Proud wrong for withdrawing the Stipulation. Media will be responsible for all funding get ready for a tax increase.

    4. So now Broonall's Lake Swim Club is taking pride in sticking the borough with the cost of their dam!? GREEAAAAT....

  14. Get the swim club to be reasonable and stop suing. If they want a dam, they can chip in and "own" it.

  15. What, Swim Club have to pay for their own dam!? You're nuts, man!

    1. No, it's not nuts. We were PROMISED this dam many decades ago, before you even lived in this town. The County isn't going to welch on the deal just because Dems are in power in Media now. Sorry folks, that's the way it is. You live in Delaware County!

    2. Promised? Decades ago? Delaware County has more concerns than BLCC. And the state certainly has more vital transportation projects.

    1. The money to fix the bridge got screwed by the owners of the Swim Club. They don't care; they're looking to dump the cost on the borough. We'll see what the judge says in the end. My bet: your dam, your dime, Swim Club!

    2. Swim Club's "contempt" suit got the stipulation tossed, upsets state funding. They're not as smart as they seem to think.

  19. Judge Proud's rationale was that this was not an order that was created by the court; that the court "signed on a line provided by the parties". The court entered the order based on the request of the parties and the declaration that THEY had agreed.

After having encouraged the parties to settle the Swim Club's complaint and come to an agreement months before, the Judge concluded that there was no agreement between the parties and thus set aside the order that was based on their supposed agreement. The case then returned to its status prior to what had been though to be an agreement.

The Swim Club's appeal is based on a rule that states that a Judge can modify an order within thirty days of its issuance. The club contends that the Court cannot change the order after that time. The borough's answer to this is due later this month.

Note that the Judge did not address the Swim Club's assertion that the word "reestablish" meant "two lanes". If Judge Proud's decision to vacate his order were overturned by the Commonwealth Court, the matter would likely be returned to Judge Proud's court for a decision on the merits of the Club's argument, which in and of itself appears to have little validity.

'The bottom line' here is that if such a stipulation were left in place, the Swim Club could just keep suing for contempt about anything they want to have done their way. (Note that RACP funding will not be disbursed until the project is completed and all lawsuits are concluded.) So, the court's not going to allow that--instead the Court will craft its own decision and make its own order.

It's worth noting that each and every Superior Court Judge elected in Delaware County for the last 20 years has been a Republican. Perhaps the Swim Club overestimated the significance of that fact from the outset.
