A handwritten sign posted on the front entrance of the Lukoil gas station in Media, confirms the location has been closed for good as of 8/28/13. It's not clear if the proposal for a new Wawa in the area had any influence on this closure, but this raises a compelling question: Does this further the need for a new Wawa across the street? What's Media Borough Council's and Mayor Bob McMahon's plan for Media's gateway?
Their gas prices were always 20 to 30 cents higher than anywhere else. No one local would get gas there if they knew they could go two blocks and save the money.
I can think of a certain political group they "own" via a lot of campaign signs I saw this past spring on Media Real Estate owned buildings. Sadly, for the Strines at least, the residents of those buildings didn't exactly beat feet to the polls in May for that group.
Hopefully this comment survives the "non-censorship" trumpeted on this blog.
There have been rumors of a super wawa at that intersection for a while now. Let's hope it doesn't happen because that intersection couldn't handle the traffic.
Don't you believe in private property rights, MediaMike? This is not a communist country. The gateway(Starbucks)property is NOT owned by Media Real Estate. But a private individual. And you want Wawa to take over the "entire corner."
Media Real Estate had a chance to buy where Starbucks is now. They were too cheap. So someone else bought the gateway corner, MediaMike. That' capitalism.
If someone wants to give me $1,000,000 for my house--even though it isn't worth it--and I don't want to move, do I have to let them buy me out? That's property rights.
I'm not in disagreement with you Anon, but the $64,000 question is can that corner support both a Super Wawa and the existing Starbucks? That's prudent municipal planning.
There is no $64,000 question. The Media Democrats have already privately committed to not doing a new wawa of any sort. They can't even figure out how to repair a bridge.
Meanwhile, the gateway to our town gets uglier by the month. Am I the only one embarrassed by this? And everyone is so concerned with the Incremental Wawa traffic. Let's aggregate the amount of traffic that we are DOWN from all of the business closings. Let's see: we are down two banks, a few shops in the Media shopping center, a hotel, half the businesses west of Orange, a few bulldozed blocks, etc. And we want to prevent a viable business from moving in? It will add too much traffic?

ReplyDeleteThe Strine family owns the property. Luke Oil was just a renter.
ReplyDeleteWhat DOESN'T the Strine family own????

ReplyDeleteThat Wawa only works best with Starbucks out of the area and Wawa taking over the entire corner.

Delete@ Anon: Pardon my French. Wawa should "BUY OUT" the entire corner to make sure traffic flow is best. Is that capitalist enough for you?

DeleteSuper Wawa and Starbucks would be a traffic nightmare. It is horrible there now with just Starbucks.

ReplyDelete....they are as confused as Obama is.
ReplyDeleteAmazing where some folks get their information and perceptions. The Strine family categorically does NOT own the Lukoil property. Sorry to disappoint.
ReplyDeleteThe Acme in the same shopping center is technically Nether Providence. Is the Luke Oil actually in Media Borough or is it Nether Providence?
