Media's Got it: Sidewalks, Bike Facilities, Public Transportation

Here's some interest statistics reflective of a town like Media, Pa.  I'd be interested to find out if our town has similar percentages, aside from maybe the bike commuters, I bet we're close.

Traffic calming is an interesting subject, which I'm doing some research on.  I know there are many in the community who are at their wits end with speeding and vehicles rolling through stop signs - have a chat with the folks up on N. Olive above 8th Street sometime!

Interestingly enough, there are many communities who face such challenges and have come up with some best practices and surveyed 100 traffic engineers, police officers and safety professionals from around the United States asking them to rate the effectiveness of various traffic-calming methods.

  1. Need speed bump or traffic signal on 252 by Holly house. NO ONE (cops included) stop when there are pedestrians waiting right by crosswalk

    1. That's because you aren't supposed to stop when there are pedestrians waiting by the crosswalk. The signs say "Yield to Pedestrians WITHIN Crosswalk", so the pedestrian is to wait on the sidewalk until their judgment indicates it is safe to start to cross. Only when the pedestrian has started to cross are vehicles required to stop to allow safe passage.

  2. I agree that N Olive Street is a problem. I also requested that the borough put one on Jasper St behind the Plum Street Mall and got an official no. Drivers use this route as a way to speedily avoid State Street even though it is frequented by pedestrians.

    1. I should have been more explicit. Not a stop sign. A speed bump. I think such a tool would be helpful on both N. Olive and Jasper streets.

  6. @7:31 Then why are there always cops there and people complaining about how dangerous it is?

  7. Am I the only one who thinks sidewalks in the borough stink? They end for no reason, are too often heaved, or barely cut around trees. Several places even have utility poles coming up right through the middle.

  8. There are too many stop signs as it is now. They just waste gas and your brake pads. Get the lights timed.
