Poll: Where should Media Elementary be temporarily re-located to?

With the recent news on the temporary closure of Media Elementary this Fall, where do you think the students should be transferred to until the repairs can be completed?

For Media residents and families, this will be a very big issue in the coming months.  Proposals have ranged from classroom modules on Barrall field, to re-locating to a nearby facility (i.e. Nativity, Roosevelt, etc.)

Upper Providence passes resolution in support of opening 3rd St. Brdige

It seems that not only has Media been waiting for the 3rd Street Bridge to open, but so has Upper Providence.  I was told that residents were in attendance at last Thursday's Upper Prov. meeting to voice their support for access across the proposed bridge.

Upper Providence council went on to pass a resolution in support the bridge.  A formal letter is being sent to Media Borough.

MEDIA+MUSIC+IRONHILLxBEER= Saturday, May19th, 2012

Iron Hill's craft brewing festival has quietly become one of the most popular and well attended events in Media borough.  On Saturday, May 19th, they'll do it again with specialty craft beers from around the region, along with food and live music.  The energy and vibe are excellent with open-air feel of a SXSW swag event.

Tickets have gotten more expensive over the years, but the proceeds go to great cause towards helping the Media Youth Center.  Here's what you need to know:  this event sells out VERY quickly, it has for years.  So if you're looking to attend, swing over to the website for tickets ($45 per person online).  Tickets are $50 at the door the day of the event, but don't count on it, it'll sell out way before then.  Kudos to Iron Hill for also providing designated driver status and entry to the festival for $5.

The event goes from 1pm to 5pm, but doesn't alway end there.  A lot of attendees like to venture out along State Street and often congregate at Quotations, John's Grill, Plumstead Inn and Sligo. Some in town may consider it a drunken rove of crowds, but I've not seen many problems.  The Media Police do a excellent job of handling this event.

Hopefully Iron Hill considers expanding this event in the future to maybe include more of State St.  Perhaps there might be a possibility of a regional wine fest in Media someday too.

Media's Dining Under the Stars - May 2nd to Sept. 26 2012

With the weather warning up, people are anxious to start eating outside and nothing captures that experience like Media's Dining Under the Stars.  You'll have to wait another six weeks, but the season will start Wednesday, May 2nd and go to September 26th.

With two new restaurants (Spasso's and Diego's) on the verge of opening, there will be plenty of new and exciting choices this year.  The most popular spot?  Well, seems Fellini's held that title last year, as the average wait for a table outside their restaurant took as long as 45 minutes.

Media Elementary announces school may be closed for up to one year due to structure remediation

#mediapa

Update: 7:30 pm EST:  Media Patch reports on the latest regarding Media Elementary.

About 30 minutes ago, Media Elementary's Maria Koch called families stating the school may be closed for potentially one year due to remediation purposes.  In all probability the school will not be allowed to open in September, but school officials emphasized the building is currently 100 percent safe.  The announcement of the closure was due to recently discovered structural issues.

Details to come.

It's water (and your survey) over the 3rd St. Dam

If not for millions of dollars and 16 years of delay, the recent developments over the "lost" surveys sent by Citizens Advisory Council might just be funny.  As of yesterday's mail, I've still not received my survey.  However, to my surprise a few single family households have received as many as three and they told me they intend to fill out and return each and everyone of them. It's just my theory, but I suspect that's what may have happened to the missing surveys as to why some got mutiple, why others got nothing.

These people  didn't tell me what bridge options they prefer, but it just goes to show how easy it'll be to "stuff the ballot box" to manipulate the outcome.  I'm sure some will be signed by Mickey Mouse and his pals, Goofy maybe, or others just made up.....who's going to check, CAC...overseen by borough council who wasn't going admit they signed the FROGs petition (i.e. greenway), until asked Thursday night?  And who obviously put their supporters on the committee?

Despite the plea by Brian Hall, Kent Davidson and Paul Robinson that they signed as residents while campaigning last year, they didn't miss the opportunity to support the group in their campaign literature.  And if Kent Davidson thinks he should be judged on his behavior as to whether he's biased or unbiased; know that he signed the FROG petition stipulating no vehicle traffic across the bridge. His wife is an active FROG and he lives at the base of the bridge.  Conflict of interest?
Campaign Literature of Media Democrats 2011. It's nice of them to think of the FROGS over taxpayers and businesses
This week one commenter brought up a good point about the survey.  They essentially wanted to know: how can you make a real world decision as a taxpayer without knowing the projected cost of each option and how it will be paid for?  Apparently, the survey doesn't provide that detail which is very misleading.  Neither borough council nor the CAC has explained to anyone the costs, risks and/or the court order that stipulates the way the issue should be resolved.  The survey presents the bridge/dam options as being equal, but that's far from being realistic.

By not divulging the costs in the survey or subsequent risks of loosing funding for one option over another; the CAC and borough council are hopeful of responses that will further support their position of anything other than what is stipulated in the court order.  They have to in order to support their special interests they've committed to.  Borough council has been far less than transparent in their support for the FROGs. If cost was a factor, would the outcome of the survey be different?!?! Yes, it would!  Especially if what the court order stipulates is 100% financed and ready to begin?

The deadline to postmark your survey is March 19th.  If like many, you still would like to receive one, please check at Media Patch for details.

Third St. Bridge - Borough Council Meeting Thursday 3/15 8pm

Media Borough Council Meeting - 8pm Boro. Community Center
If you attended the March 5th Community meeting on the Third St Bridge and feel you didn't received the information you were expecting in terms of costs, legal issues, design plans, etc., please consider attending tomorrow's borough council meeting. Questions are welcomed from the public during public comment and privilege of the floor.  Here's tomorrow night's agenda.

The meeting is held in the community center (by the Media Police Station) and starts at 8pm.  You can also view it via channel 10 on Comcast and channel 42 on Verizon FIOS.
What Happened to the 3rd St. Bridge Surveys?
With so much emphasis put on the survey's by the CAC and borough council, I'm surprised I've still not received one as of 3/14.  I received a call from the Mayor via the borough's emergency notification system I'd get one, but still no survey. Some have received them, while others apparently haven't.  The return date is 3/19, so if you still haven't received yours, please leave a comment.
CAC minutes from 2/27

On Monday February 27th while at the CAC meeting, I asked a question of who on the CAC was a representative of the Friends of Glen Providence Park.  Neither my question or response was in the recent meeting minutes.  The CAC may not record comments from the floor, but these types of meetings should include all discussion.

Spasso's Restaurant.....Sooner than later

It's hard to see from the outside, but progress is coming along nicely for Media's soon to be opened, Spasso's Restaurant.  Media Patch reported back in February that the owner was looking to open in March.  Well, it looks to be on schedule.

With a recently installed lighted sign out front, it looks like this long awaited eatery could open any day now.

Media's Third St. Bridge: Leadership you CAN'T trust

#delcotimes
 #mediapa
The Political Agenda of the Third St. Bridge (uncovered):

This week I received a news article written by the Daily Times showing that former Council President, Joan Hagan (D) and Solicitor, Frank Daly (D) agreed that accepting the "non-federal aid agreement" would clearly define ownership of the bridge.  Former Council President, Joan Hagan is even quoted as saying, "I can't believe there will be any objection to our taking ownership."  So why did Media Borough file a lawsuit and incur thousands of dollars in legal feels to have the courts determine who owned the bridge and repair work?

Daily Times Article written by Susan Serbin - Sat. Sept 23, 2000 (excerpt)

This is a good question worth better understanding since the bridge went from initially costing taxpayers $1.4 million 12 years ago, to a hefty price of $3.5 million today.  Having a needed and dangerous bridge held up over a political agenda for the last 12 years; at an additional cost of $2.1 million to TAXPAYERS is an outrage.

To deflect responsibility,  the Media Democrats released a letter to the editor  of the Daily Times last September stating the bridge repair delay was the fault of the County and Broomall's.  The following was stated by Joan Hagan and former Borough Councilperson, Gail Whitaker:
Campaign Contributions
It is most interesting that because of the refusal of the county and the club to acknowledge ownership, this issue has languished without resolution. Media, in 2006, filed an action asking the court to determine ownership of the dam. As the litigation stalled, council leadership realized that the people of Media would be better served by keeping Third Street closed and, in July 2009, council voted unanimously to abandon the roadway? The county and Broomall’s Club responded by filing an action seeking monetary damages against the borough which action had the effect of preventing the street abandonment. It was, therefore, the failure of the club and the county which has delayed the project and driven up the cost from the initial $1.4 million to today’s quote of $3.5 million or more.
The bridge was not only abandoned, but the engineer who was hired by the Media Democrats years ago went on to bill almost $100,000 in fees for a closed bridge.  During the span of the bi-partisan coalition, he was removed, but not after giving thousands of dollars in campaign contributions throughout the years to the Media Democrats.  The engineer was also Chairman of the Brookhaven Democrats.
Daily Times Article written by Susan Serbin - Sat. Sept 23, 2000
During those 16 years both Council President Brian Hall and Councilman Paul Robinson, who were recently elected again last fall,  served prior terms on borough council as vice presidents.  Again, why weren't they able to address bridge ownership?  And, if a greenway was so important to the "community" why wasn't it brought up then?!?!  What's interesting is that, Paul Robinson served as VP under Council President, Joan Hagan and Brian Hall served as VP under then Council President, Frank Daly. If that doesn't illustrate a political agenda, I'm not sure what would. (Ed. note:  I asked the person who gave me this letter above if there were corresponding Borough Council meeting minutes and was told the borough couldn't find them.  I'll formally request these minutes from the borough next week.)

So after 16 years, how is the bridge now on the verge of finally being resolved?
About 18 months ago two democrats and two republicans had had enough of 16 years of "political agendas" and decided that in the best interest of the town; a bipartisan coalition was needed.  With 4 out of 7 votes between them, the coalition replaced Council President Peter Williamson (D), with Pete Alyanakian (R).  With Monika Rehoric (D) appointed as Vice President, the coalition went on to resolve the legal hurdles, and applied for an received, $75,000 from the county for design costs, and $650,000 from the state for the repair.  With PennDot already committed to 80% of this cost, the bridge became fully financed.  Interestingly enough, what they accomplished in a year, the democratic majority couldn't do in well over a decade.

At what might be considered spite; last Fall, the Media Democrats then went on to support and bolster the Friends of the Glen Providence Park group through their campaign literature while appealing to the FROGS for candidates that would fight the vehicular traffic of a new bridge (i.e.support a greenway).  Kent Davidson, who's wife co-founded FROGS is now a Councilman.  In fact, everyone who signed their petition during the election last year is now on Borough Council!
Media Democrat's campaign literature 2011
Where this issue stands:
  1. Croynism:
The friends of the Glen Providence Park petition that clearly argues the need for a greenway was signed by three people who are currently now on Borough Council:

    • Council President, Brian Hall
    • Paul Robinson (Chair of CAC)
    • Kent Davidson (Wife co-founded FROGs and live at base of bridge on Third and West St.)
  2. Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) - Political Agenda
Two people currently appointed to the Citizens advisory Committee (CAC) have publicly made statements back in Oct 2011 that they represented FROGs.
  3. The CAC even thinks the CAC is slanted
Co-Chair of CAC abruptly resigned over what he thought was a slanted, one-side motive of CAC. I attended the CAC meeting on Feb 27 asking about the resignation and further transparency on who on the committee represent FROGS.  I was talked over and ignored.   I was also questioned by a councilman about my knowledge of the resignation letter and what I knew about it.  I later met with the person who resigned to better understand the issues which he substantiated.

  4. Media Business Authority Gag Order?
No statements have been formally made by the Media Business Authority about opening the bridge to traffic.  How could this be? The MBA receives their funding from Media Borough Council.  This week I casually asked and heard from MANY State St. businesses who enthusiastically support the bridge being opened.   With a pending town center to be developed in Middletown, another access point to Media could be crucial our town's small businesses and restaurants.
  5. Emergency Services
Everyone who I talk to say the emergency services (Fire, Police, Medical) agree that fixing the bridge and allowing vehicular traffic is a "no brainer."  So why hasn't the CAC or Borough Council presented these vital statements?
  6. Democratic Councilman calls Chair of the County Republicans for "perspective."
I followed up on this one and it was nothing more than the Media Borough Council quietly trying to gauge how serious the other parties were regarding the legal court order on the bridge.  If Media Borough Council is trying to cut a deal this late in the game, I question their position of how strong a case they really think they have.  I don't speak for the county or Broomall, but I've not heard any interest from either of them in considering any changes to the court order.
  7. The Legal Court Order
I'm not a lawyer, but I read the court order and there is no misinterpretation to me of what needs to be done. In fact, it states it must follow the Schnable Engineering report created back in 1998. I believe if those on the CAC had a chance to read the order, they may have passed on being on the committee.  I did.

  8. The $650,000 question
The grant money provided by Senator Pileggi is not guaranteed forever, in fact there is a major concern that further delay or additional lawsuits may jeopardize these funds and that the state may decide to use it for other pressing needs.  How will borough council address this issue and what are other financial alternatives if Media should not get the $650k?
So What Happens Now?

In light of these developments, I would ask everyone in the borough to please fill out and return survey's on third st bridge that were mailed to residents and businesses.  As of yesterday's mail, I have yet to receive my survey.  Please leave a comment if you haven't received yours.

As for adjoining communities who also have concerns about these developments, I would encourage you to participate in upcoming meetings on Third St. Bridge.

The Third St Bridge: The "Special Interest" behind the delay

Despite the turn-out, people may have felt Monday night's Third St. Bridge Community Advisory Committee didn't amount to a whole lot in explaining the details of the bridge/dam.  A few explanations were given on bridge size, dam constraints and environmental impacts of the proposed options, but for the most part many questions regarding legal ramifications, emergency response and financial stipulations were deflected and not answered by the committee.  People may have been disappointed that there wasn't a whole lot of substance to the presentation or responses to important questions, but it appears it was intended to be that way.

Media Borough Council, through the creation of the CAC went to great lengths to draw attention to Third St. Bridge and have everyone objectively submit their input.  Mayor, Bob McMahon even went as far as to use the Emergency Notification system to have calls placed to residents announcing last night's meeting.  The system's only been used twice in it's existence, which seemed odd to use for a meeting on a bridge.  But, this was a big night and people were going to get their chance to speak openly about a bridge that's been closed for 16 years, or so we thought.

Was it all a setup?
The theatrics at the meeting made it seem that everyone gathering in groups afterwards would have shared input on the bridge.  What people weren't told when they huddled into their breakout sessions was that borough council already had their own agenda for the Third St. Bridge.  I spoke about that in my last post, but here's further evidence:

Yesterday I received a document from Borough Hall listing the names of individuals who signed a petition circulated by the Friends of Glen Providence Park.  The significance of this relates to fact that a signature on this petition clearly supports a greenway/bike patth as defined by the third item on the page : "Create a pedestrian/bicycle greenway on the Third Street Bridge, open to emergency motor vehicles only"

From www.boroughcouncil2011.com
So, if your recommendation on Monday night was for a greenway, you might be in luck.  If not, your time may have been wasted.  On the document I received, three councilman, who were candidates at the time last October, signed the FROGs petition :  Kent Davidson (His wife co-founded FROGS), Paul Robinson (Chair of CAC) and Brian Hall (Council President). It's also important to point out that former councilwoman Debbie Krull signed the petition and is Co-Chair of the Media Borough Democrats who  currently control a full majority on borough council.

By manipulating the CAC, It's a apparent that borough council "stacked the deck" for a greenway all along.  Paul Robinson was not only made Chair of the committee, but outspoken representatives of FROG (at least two) were also appointed to take part.  In fact, one committee member who in good faith trusted the process, resigned due to what he thought was unfair treatment and conduct by the the FROGs special interests.  I heard yesterday there may be another resignation submitted for similar claims.  The resignation "letter" I was told by borough council didn't exist, and was questioned on what I knew about it,  in fact did!  Last Sunday I met with the person who sent the "letter" to borough council!

Democracy in action, if you know the right people.

"You have come to trust us to fight against outside influence and to do what is best for our borough"
Even at the meeting people were stopped from publicly speaking on positions that support a bridge with traffic.  A retired fireman spoke of the need for the bridge and how important a few minutes  can be in medical and fire emergencies.  Apparently, he was told by borough council not to make those statements?  WHAT?

Based on this conduct and the overwhelming facts related to the special interests on the CAC, I would recommend that NONE of their considerations on Third St Bridge be considered from this committee.  Doesn't appear to me that borough council cares about safety, convenience, commerce or the well being of the community, but are more concerned with delivering a "kick back," or in this case a "greenway" to the special interests of a few.

The biggest fight is yet to come:
Whatever recommendation Borough Council comes up with, other than what is stipulated in the settled agreement, will have to be re-visited by the two other parties - Broomall Lake and the Delaware County. I intend to meet with both of them to present my findings on the conduct of Media Borough council.

This agreement which was settled last year by Judge Proud entails fixing the dam and including a road with vehicular traffic.  The settlement last Summer also allowed for a grant of $650,000 from the state which provided the last piece needed to have this project 100% financed.

With the financing in place, the dam/bridge repair could begin in months;  it just needs an approval from a borough council that may have political obligations to a special interest group that doesn't want the bridge.

The Third St Bridge: What Hasn't Been Discussed

It didn't make a whole lot of sense for Borough Council to form a citizens advisory council, after the fact that the lawsuit regarding the bridge has already been agreed upon by the three parties (Borough, Broomall, Del.County) and settled by Judge Proud.  The discussion first should have begun with what options would the borough have with the two other parties involved in the lawsuit and then go from there.

To my knowledge, no one has come back to the table to discuss that issue.  Coming up with ideas for the bridge is one thing, renegotiating a settled lawsuit with two other parties will be a whole other matter and potentially costly for the Media taxpayers.  I know it, and borough council does too.  Unfortunately, 16 years went by which should have been plenty of time to discuss alternatives.

What's discussed at the CAC at tomorrow's meeting (Monday, 7pm Boro Hall)  may all be a moot point, but I wanted to point out some issues I have with borough council and the committee.

  • Who on Borough Council Signed the Friends of the Glen Providence Park Petition?

I'd like to know who on borough council signed the petition presented by Friends of the Glen Providence Park.  I understand, Councilman Kent Davidson did, but it's important to know who else.  The petition includes the following with item #3 being relevant.
- Maximize public participation in the design of the dam and bridge;
- Minimize the project’s damage to Glen Providence Park, especially plant and animal life;
Create a pedestrian/bicycle greenway on the Third Street Bridge, open only to emergency motor vehicles;
Enhance the beauty of the dam, bridge and surrounding area.
  • Friends of Glen Providence Park Special Interest:

For the sake of transparency, I'd like to know who on the CAC is a representative of the Friends of the Glen Providence Park.  At least two people have made public statements in Oct 2011, stating that they were.  That being the case, using their group's lobbying influence to distribute literature and leaflets to peoples homes is not only a passive aggressive move to sway the decisions, but would also intimidate those on the CAC who may not agree or want to speak up against an organized movement.  Would the community like it if so-and-so bridge builder came to town, put people on the CAC committee and then handed out flyers as to why a bridge was good?  And then had elected borough officials sign their petition for a bridge?!?  Truthfully, this scenario borders on outrage.

I tried at the last meeting to ask this question, but was harshly denied and ignored.
  • Lack of Transparency:

One of the committee members resigned abruptly last week and apparently submitted a lengthy reasoning for his departure.  I asked borough council for this and they sent me a one paragraph letter stating that this person did resign, not the letter as to why.  If a letter was sent to borough council, it should be public domain and shared.  I asked Councilman Paul Robinson about this and he went on to question "what" letter and what I knew about the letter.  I have a lot of respect for Paul, but thought that should have been handled differently.

  • Is Borough Council withholding information?:

From what I've been told all of the emergency services (Police, Fire, Medical) have stated it's a "no brainer" to fix this bridge and open it to vehicular traffic.  Neither the CAC or Borough council has released this information, and I'd like to know why.

Also, the children living in the new development at the top of 3rd St. (Kirk Ln) will be attending Media Elementary.  What has been done by borough council to address the need of the adjoining community?

  • Media Business Authority Silent:

What's the Media Business Authority's position on the Third St. bridge and why hasn't this been discussed?
  • Media Democrats ask Republican Party for advice:

If the democratic controlled borough council is so sure they can change the agreed upon lawsuit, then why are they reaching out to the Chairman of the Delaware County Republicans for perspectives on the bridge?  The Media Democrats who waste no opportunity to bash the "County" are now calling the Republicans for advice.
  •  The $650,000 Question:

The grant money provided by Senator Pileggi is not guaranteed forever, in fact there is a major concern that further delay or additional lawsuits may jeopardize these funds and that the state may decide to use it for other pressing needs.  How will borough council address this issue and what are other financial alternatives if Media should not get the $650k?

Should the money fall through, Media and borough council will be left with one of the top 10 dangerous dams in the state and no easy way to pay for the repair.  That would be a tragedy for everyone.

A survey will be sent out to residents and businesses in the coming days.  Please take the time to fill it out and return it to the borough.

Welcome to Media, Desert Rose Mediterranean Cuisine and Market

I was there the very first day it opened.  A bit late in the evening, but I wanted to check out what Media's newest, and as far as I know, only Mediterranean eatery was all about.

To begin with, the new location is quite nice with large windows and a view of Media people don't normally see....it's on the westside of town where the trolley track end.  With Desert Rose now open and a few notable shops (Orvis), it's nice to see this part of State St. develop. In fact, there is also a little known antique shop in this area that has some really neat items that cater to Media's history.

Back to the food.....I ordered the Chicken Shawarma (marinated roasted chicken, cucumbers, tomato, hummus, fresh herbs, laffa).  It was not only excellent, but filling at a very reasonable price.  As a courtesy, I was also given a pastry that I don't recall the name of, but excellent in its own right too.  I like the menu and the clever combinations of salads, soups and hearty sandwiches.  They will also have a nice selection of pre-prepared meals, which is handy for people on the go.

Desert Rose will also server authentic Turkish Black Coffee and a dish called Shakshuka, which consists of poached eggs, tomato sauce, onions, cumin and parsley served in a cast iron pan.  Now that's pretty cool and will be top of the order on my next visit.

In addition to the food, what I really liked seeing and had me impressed; was the sheer enthusiasm Jason and his wife have for sharing their love for this food.  Passion, enthusiasm and delicious food make a great combination for success and I wish Desert Rose the utmost.

Welcome to Media!

Media Mayor uses Emergency Notification system for announcement of 3rd St. Dam Meeting

If you live in Media borough and you received a call from 555-555-5555 at around 6:05pm EST tonight, well that's the borough calling to inform you that there will be a meeting to discuss the Third St. Bridge issue on Monday, March 5th.  The pre-recorded message was sent via the borough Emergency Notification system.

There will also be a survey sent to residents and business this week to solicit input on recommendations for the repair.  If you aren't on the emergency notification list, you can sign up at the Media Borough website.

For those who missed the message, you can listen to it in it's entirety here.
