Olive Street Garage: This is not only unacceptable, it's dangerous

Today 2/19/19, this shot was taken raising even more questions about Olive Street Garage.  Is this garage acceptable, safe or even legal?

Since supposedly being repaired at the cost of ~$900,000 in 2014 the list grows supporting the position that Olive Street Garage never really was.  Not only that, there was never any explanation or recourse pursued by Media Borough Council to recoup the money spent for the repair.

With many businesses in dire need of parking, having something like this mismanaged is unacceptable.  Not just mismanaged, but multiple times.

  1. Unacceptable. Throw out the Media Borough Councilmembers. Thankfully the Republicans are putting up a candidate this year so I don't have to be forced to vote for this crap any longer!

    1. Someone needs to account for this failure. Someone should lose their job over the way this has been handled the mayor. and Jeff Smith are the top of the heap and really should be fired for endangering the public on borough property

    2. The Mayor isn't up for 2 years in terms of elections.

Let's send a message to these Democrats. Voting Republican this year to make it clear. Mismanage and I won't vote for you.

    3. No 2 inches clear on that rebar
Get VP to look at it you'll get a honest answer at least

  2. These people on borough council are there for nothing more than their personal agendas and showmanship. With the way these types of structures can collapse, especially the one recently demolished on Orange Street; this is criminal.

    1. What party managed the county garage?

    2. Actually the Media Borough Democrats were the ones that denied the County with moving forward to renovate or change the garage. Since the county needed the Borough to approve.

    3. So the only article you found was from Sept. 2017 about Media Council having a public meeting to start the process of replacing the County garage? Why didn't the all republican county council (all Rs since 1980) maintain the garage?

      Delete
    4. They did, there are articles dating back to 2014. The Media Borough Democrats that sat on Council denied the County Council's proposals every time they brought one forward to renovate or rebuild the property.

    1. I voted for Hall in 2015. I'll be voting him out this May and if not in May and in November for a Republican for the first time ever if necessary. I am done with all of them and their special interests.

  5. Already found a different option than what the Media Democrats are giving us now. What they are giving us is WASTE and no other option. I'll vote for this guy.

I saw his ad on facebook yesterday!

  6. Wow, I never realized how partisan this blog was...

    1. When the Democrats have run the Borough for the past 9 years all on their own there is only one entity to blame. It isn't about partisanship but nice try on trying to look "nonpartisan."

      Delete
    2. Agreed. Since when is this a political party issue? This damn blog...

      Delete
    3. It's a political issue because one party has run this borough for 9 years and has done nothing to fix this issue.

  7. Voting for the Republicans, Democrats do nothing but mismanage everything. If they can't build a bridge they can't renovate a parking garage.

  9. This is a borough asset and we have a borough manager what gives with Jeff Smith
I don't care how many articles were written about media pa. Manage the borough and its contractors or step aside
What PE firm signed off on the repairs ?

  12. Our Borough Council needs a revamp. Who did they hire to think that slim wooden plank would hold up an entire parking garage? Can I have what they are drinking? Because they are clearly not with the rest of us rn.

  13. Pretty sure this setup is to allow repairs to the underside of the concrete beam to be made.

    1. I don't care if it is set up to allow us all to ride a zip-line over Baltimore Ave. This is dangerous and beyond ridiculous that the Borough Council allowed for this to go on this long. It shows how inept they are as a Council.

  14. The concrete beam in the picture is clearly compromised. DO NOT GO INTO THIS STRUCTURE!

    1. Agreed we need to stay away!

    2. Unless you're a licensed structural engineer that has closely examined that beam, you have no basis for claiming that the garage is unsafe. I know the modern Know Nothings blissfully follow the example of Dear Glorious Leader, Hair Furor, by believing they know all the answers without any input from experts, but to make baseless claims that the garage is in danger of imminent collapse is irresponsible fear-mongering to bash the political party you disagree with.

The beam shows no visible cracking where it rests on the girder, it looks like it either got hit or has some spalling underneath. The wood is not meant to hold up the structure. To think so is asinine.

      Delete
    3. “The wood is not meant to hold up the structure.“ As the picture shows WOOD HOLDING UP THE STRUCTURE!

      Delete
    4. Claiming some are indless "know-nothings" and then saying the wood isn't there for holding up the structure.

That's also one beam. Go look at the other beams and see if there are cracks in them yet or not. The fact of the matter is we are wasting time with this temporary fix brought to us by our "Know Nothing" Borough Council.

    7. You don't need to be structural engineer to be critical over the way this expensive repair has been handled
In a previous council meeting I heard Brian Hall ask Kevin Mattson to dig into the work that was previously done in 2011 and as usual you never heard anything about it if its truely safe then post the the letter from the structural engineer stating same that's how it should be handled instead you get the public deciding themselves if it's safe that's why they're called civil structural engineers media borough continues to disappoint in there handling of infrastructure projects

      Delete
    8. Clearly we need a structural engineer in the room so they can show Council this the parking deck we are talking about and not the 3rd Street Bridge.

  17. Our Borough Council reeks of stupidty.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ridiculous. I found that they had a meeting about the Olive St. Parking Garage maintenance on Jan. 28th last month. But that's just it, that's the only place where there is information about it. But all it says is "Olive St. Parking Garage Maintenance."

Our Borough Administration is a joke and our Council doesn't care about us as residents at all.

    1. Please include Jeffrey in the admin staff as I really don't know what the guy does for the borough of media
Previous posts on this site have stated he should find another line of work based upon dealings with him I would say there is a lot of truth in that statement. Seemingly he stopped caring about code issues years back and since there is no oversite he continues to do nothing
      And discount every code issue
To the detriment of potential media homeowners and the surprises they will find years later of course

    2. He should be included. That's ridiculous. What do these people do?!

  20. Can ATM get to the bottom of this garage debacle and who is responsible for the way this has been handled ?

Do we need to switch retained engineer firms until we get one of these firms to agree
With what media borough councils repair strategy ? After all saison done your personally liable as a PE in the state of PA
That's a big burden for Mattson

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mattson is absurd. Did you see what he tried to say to the public about the parking garage? He's a joke.

      Delete
    2. Council's strategy is move onto the next A&E firm until someone agrees with what they want to do the difference in PA is that nobody or company should take on that burden because media borough council can't listen to sound engineering principals really a shame

      Delete
    3. It's a shame but we have only ourselves to blame. We've elected these individuals, all 7 of them. Time for someone new like Terry Rumsey or maybe that Straw kid.
