Halloween is on for tonight in Media Borough

With the recent storm causing havoc for many schedules and businesses, some in the community raised questions as to whether Halloween would be postponed.  Other communities have considered delaying Halloween, but not here in Media.  For all you faithful out there, Halloween is on for TONIGHT!

I didn't see or here any reports of soaped windows or toilet paper in the trees, so not sure if the infamous Mischeif Night was informally cancelled by those who partake in such activities....whoever that might be.

Don't forget to turn you clocks BACK this Sunday!

Media, PA cleans up after Super Storm Sandy

#mediapa

Super Storm Sandy won't be forgotten anytime soon, if ever.  Whether is was the rain, wind, flooding or loss of electricity, everyone in some way felt her blow.  The preperation for the storm was immense and so were the long hours people had to endure in order to get through it.

Power outages were sporadic and it looks like many in the borough are still without electricity.  It's hard to gauge how long these things will take to be repaired, but I did see PECO trucks working on the lines.  Luckily, I haven't heard of anyone's house being severely damaged by falling trees, which I thought would have surely happened.

Traffic is light this morning with roads still littered with debris.  Septa is expected to come back online sometime today, but as of now, no update.  It's also great to report that even though Media was to use Springton Lake Middle School as an emergency shelter; no one, as far as I know, had to make use of it.  I stopped by at the facility this am, but nothing to report there.  Thanks to Delaware County for communicating this information.  It's assuring to know these facilities are available, even if residents didn't have to use them.

Here are pictures from this morning taken throughout Media and Upper Providence.

Power out in in certain northern parts of Media Borough

Tree limbs came down about 50 minutes ago and sparked a small fire on N. Olive Street.  At about the same time power went out for people in the vicinity.  One side of 6th Street is out and people along 5th Street are also reporting power loss.  No ETA on restoration.

This is how bad the flooding was during IRENE, could Sandy be worse?

#sandydelco
#mediapa

Sandy is shaping up to be a very bad storm, but will it be worse that what we experienced with last year's Irene?  It's hard to imagine flooding worse than this.

Last year's flooding during hurricane Irene

Sandy at Media's doorstep

 #mediapa

At about 6am the rain coming down wasn't too bad, but things have been getting progressively worse.  With regional rail lines suspended and many businesses telling employees to use best judgement on decisions related to coming into work, traffic is light, if non existant on the surronding roads.

Who are out and about, include both Penndot and Media's Highway Department.  Both were spotted cleaning out storm water grates that seem to be regularly clogged by the height of leaf season.

Having seen the remnants of Hurricane Floyd and Irene, I've always used Ridley Creek State Park as as a high water benchmark.  As of 7:50am EST, the creek was rising, but not as bad as I thought considering the rain from last night.

Timing Impacts for Sandy

Timing Impacts for pending storm.

Media's Halloween Parade in Hi-Def

In case you missed it, here is a video of yesterday's
Halloween Parade in Hi-Def.

Sunday Morning 10-28-12.....Media in Two Minutes!

The big news today is the expected arrival of "Frankenstorm" also known as Sandy, an off again on again hurricane.  With adverse weather expected over the next 72 hours, we'll try to cover this storm as best we can.

Ok, here's the round up of this week's events.

Halloween Parade
Halloween Parade State St. 10-27-12
I hadn't been to the Media Halloween parade in years, but I was on State Street and wanted to stay long enough to check it out.  Wow, great job and very well attended.  The bands went around the parade route twice which made it seem longer, but well worth it.  A tremendous thanks to Bryn Mawr Trust and the other contributors who make this such a popular event.

In addition, it was also a popular night for Halloween Parties up and down State Street.  If you're still looking for a costume and want to be a stand-out in the crowd for Oct 31st, consider going as a "undecided voter."You're bound to strike up a conversation.

Media Youth Center "Thunderbird" Dinner

Media is at its best when people come to gether for a great cause.  Nothing exemplifies that like the Media Youth Center "Thunderbird" dinner.  I'm grateful to have been asked to attend and look forward to helping their fundraising cause anyway I can.  The organization takes a lot of pride in the fact that they won't turn any kid away whose family can't pay the sign-up fee.  That says something special about the character of this organization.

Video shot in Media
Video Shoot on Plum Mall
I don't know who they were, or what they were filming, but it was quite intriguing to see a video being shot on Plum mall.  A lot of people are interested to know what this scene was about, so if you have any information, please share.

What Hurricane Sandy may be good for....
If anything the drought being experienced in the area, as illustrated by the low water mark at the Springton Lake Resoviour, may be helped tremendously by the forcasted rain we are expecteding.  I haven't seen the lake this low in quite sometime.

ELECTIONS
Volunteers are still needed for staffing the operations of the Polls.  If you'd like to be a Majority/Minority Inspector, Machine Operator or clerk, please contact info@allthingsmediapa.com.  We'll get you the information and training needed for this big election.

This time of year people always ask: where do I vote?  Well here's a map of the precincts and polling places.  In just two years, we've had over 11,000 people reference this map.

ELECTION DAY COVERAGE
I'm happy to report that ATM will be doing live blogging and updates throughout the day for the November 6th elections.  So if your at work or away from Media that day, swing back to check out what's going on at the polls.

Later in the evening we will also post the unofficial results of the local elections.   I can say with a lot of confidence, we post the local election results quicker than anyone else.

Where's the leadership of Media Borough Council on Hurricane Sandy?!?!?!?!
No updates, announcement or statements on the pending storm that many are calling a very dangerous situation.  State of Emergencies announced by states and cities (Philadelphia) and Media Borough Council and Mayor Bob McMahon have said NOTHING!

I've received calls and emails asking for information on emergency shelters and information on cancellations, and yet Media Borough has failed to put anything on their website!  It's nice that they can spend six months putting council meetings on Youtube, but not to communicate to the community or provide emergency preparations on what could be a very big storm, is unacceptable.

For up to the minutes information, please refer to the county website site for Hurricane Sandy Preparations: http://www.co.delaware.pa.us/  Also, please consider signing up for the email/phone/pager notifications from DELCO ALERT.

BREAKING Third St. Bridge: Upper Providence Twnshp. to join "Contempt of Court" petition filed against Media Borough

From what I’m learning by people close to the matter, Upper Providence Township is looking to join Broomall Lake Swim Club in the Contempt of Court Petition over the Third Street Bridge.  Apparently one point of contention, is that Media Borough never discussed making Third Street a one way option with Upper Providence who is responsible for Third Street from the bridge up to Kirk Lane.  Another being that Upper Providence, much like Taxpayers, Middletown Township, RTM School District and every single emergency/Fire/Police service agree this through way should be a two way road.

Campaign promises to special interests by Media Dems.
We here in Media are beyond embarrassed with the ineptness of a Borough Council that is squandering a fully financed project  for nothing more than to deliver campaign promises to a group of ten people who don’t want the bridge. These elected official who claim to represent Media have been found  to have signed greenway petitions, funded a website opposing a multi-million dollar bridge, stacked a committee, insulted neighboring communities  who visit  this town, and even included support in their campaign literature for the Friends of Glen Providence park while glaringly neglecting their fiduciary responsibilities.

Will all of this come at the cost of the PennDot funding?  No one knows!  Emails to Media Borough council regarding this money and “contempt of court” situation have gone unanswered.

It’s no surprise other communities are legally getting involved, as Media Borough council mired in special interests has failed its residents.  A court decision regarding the fate of the bridge is expected soon by Judge Proud and may even happen next week.

Media Youth Center “Thunderbird” Fundraiser - over $1 million raised to date!

The famous Media Youth Center Fundraiser has been going on for decades and continues to be as successful as ever.  In fact, throughout it’s history and the strong dedication of the Gross family who host the event, this effort has raised over one million dollars to date!  It wasn’t too long ago the winner of the night’s raffle got the keys to a brand new Ford Thunderbird, provided by the bygone Walsh Ford on Baltimore Pike.
Media Youth Center Dinner at Towne House

I was lucky enough to attend last night to see the great generosity and pride many people share for the Media Youth Center.  Those who had the chance to play basketball or box there hold fond memories and lasting friendships that exemplify what it means to be part of the area.  It did for me, and I could tell from last night’s attendance, it did for others too.

Media’s Youth Center isn't just about sports, but exemplifies conduct, character and integrity, which has been a foundation of its success. It is still known for  basketball, but through the generosity of Media Real Estate and others, a new computer lab was recently built there that has been gaining impressive recognition.   Teams from the lab have gone on to be quite competitive in their robot building and computer skills making the center even more popular by local youth.   That’s not only a great story, but so is that fact that no kid will be excluded from participating in the center’s programs, who’s family can’t afford the signup fee!  If you'd like to help in that area, please consider a donation.

Spasso adds nice touch and is open for Sunday brunch too

Spasso decorated for Halloween
What makes State Street such a pleasant experience is the time businesses take to add festive decorations for the seasonal holidays.  Nice job by Spasso's and the noticeable pumpkins on each side of the main entrance.

I've not seen the menu yet, but Spasso just recently opened for Sunday Brunch!  Let me know how it is.....

Media's Sovereign Bank robbed over the weekend.

If you haven't heard, the Sovereign Bank on the 200 block of S. Providence Rd.,  Media was robbed over the weekend. Media Police are asking for the public's help on any information related to the case. Check out the report at Media Patch.

Sunday Morning 10-21-12.....Media in Two Minutes

Though it's not technically on State Street, the biggest event today is the Media Book Sale going on at the community center.  The event will go in to Monday (10/22) and runs from 10am - 5pm.

2012 Media Borough Leaf Pick-up Schedule.
Okay, here it is!  The 2012 leaf pick up schedule.  Two options: you can put leaves in earth/plastic bags (Deals has these at their store) and they will be picked up during regular trash day.  Or, you can rack leaves into a pile on the side of the street and the borough will come by to collect based on the following schedule.

For more information, please visit the Media Public Works website.

Skunks Like Media
There's no question of all the wildlife that surrounds the borough, the skunks seem most ambitious to also call Media "Every Skunks Home Town."  You typically smell them before you see them with the Summer months the worst, but last night at least one was out an about scurrying across Jackson Street between 4th and 5th Street.

Springton Lake  Principal placed on Leave
This was no doubt the big news this week.  I've spoken to people close to the matter, but don't have anything else to share that hasn't already been covered by the papers.  Until government officials release what was in the sealed search warrant, no one knows why the investigation occurred.  Not even RTM School District.

Media's Halloween Parade with Cecily, Oct 27th 2012
She's Back!  Cecily Tynan from ABC News Channel 6 will be hosting this year's 48th annual Halloween Parade.  The event will start at 2pm on Saturday, October 27th.

2nd Annual Plumstead Food Drive
If you have extra canned food or would like to drop off a frozen turkey, please drop them off at the Plumstead Inn.  The drive runs from Oct 12th thru. Nov 16th.

Jefferson/Edgemont Condominiums
Even thought the site has been cleared, I don't expect the construction to start immediately.  From what I'm hearing the financing is still being lined up.  There's a very good chance this may not get started until 2013.

Third Street Bridge
Apparently Upper Providence isn't too happy that Media Borough Council just decided to recommend a one-way road out of a two-way road that Upper Providence oversees on the otherside of the bridge.  I'm finding it hard to find any aspect of this project done correctly by this borough council.  The council's lack leadership, organization and even conduct now has us back in court and after 16 years NOTHING has been done to resolved one of Pennsylvania's most dangerous dams.

Super Wawa
It might be just me, but if a company like Wawa comes to a town with a potential of jobs, contracts and a steady tax base, I would think at least the elected officials would be courteous enough to have an open dialogue and on going discussion with the company.  Regardless of what's decided, that's just good conduct and a direct reflection of the town.  However, here we are again, much like the Third Street Bridge where Media Borough wasn't  communicating with stakeholders (County, BLCC).  From what I understand this borough council has no dialogue going on with Wawa or Media Real Estate.

With the public opinion favoring this Wawa development, it's a shame our council isn't at least trying to work with this company to come up with a viable design.

Will a cigarette butt cost you $100?

This will cost you $100 in West Chester, PA
The borough of West Chester, PA just got serious with cigarette butt litter and has passed a resolution to impose $100 fines for improper disposal.  With the challenges faced here in our town, the time may be near to follow West Chester's lead and consider a similar ordinance.

It's great that we have a recent volunteer group who has been dedicated towards cleaning up discarded butts, but that doesn't address the cause.  It's time people bear the responsibility for creating the problem in the first place and the consequence of a stiff fine is a good start.

Just making a resolution isn't enough, it'll need to be effectively communicated to make a real impact.  Enforcing something like this isn't easy, but people need to know it's not acceptable. People tend to litter when they see litter and that seems to be a never ending cycle for cigarette butts.  Kudos to West Chester for taking their streets back.   Let's see if Media does the same.

Media, PA needs workers for Election Polling Places!!!

If you have a general interest in how the US election process works, or just have some extra time, please considering helping out at the polls this election.  Media over the last few years  has been experiencing a shortage of poll place workers, which has really strained those who work long hours to ensure everyone can vote.  Even volunteering for a few hours can make a big difference for everyone, especially in the Western and Northern Precincts.

With a presidential election this year, volume is expected to be heavy and constant throughout the day.  Please consider helping out!  Doesn't matter what party you are invovled with or candidate you support, there is work for everyone.  There will be training provided and some positions are paid.  For more information, please leave a comment or email: info@allthingsmediapa.com

Media PA Matters....Edgemont St.
A big day today as three events are about to get started.  The 32nd annual Food and Craft Festival on State Street starts at 10am and goes to 5pm.  In addition, we have a new event this year - Media PA Matters.  Check them out at Barrall Field (Edgemont St.) 12:00 to 4pm.

Lastly, today is the Middletown Township Flea Market hosted by Town Talk and Delco News Network.  The event takes place in the Granite Run Mall parking lot.

Let's see how much better traffic is handled in Media.
After 15 years, $1.9 million and cost overruns of around $200,000;  the not very well known CMAQ project is apparently completed.  This project involved updating and synchronizing the traffic lights on Baltimore Avenue (aka Pike) and Providence Road.

I'm interested to see if the community notices a better flow of traffic and less wait times at these lights.

Jefferson and Edgemont Streets October 2012
Jefferson & Edgemont Condominiums
Work is progressing at the site which has now given way to a cleared lot.  I was asked if now that the lot has been cleared will it remain that way until April? I don't know, but apparently word is construction won't begin until April.  I'll try to get that confirmed.

Third Street Bridge
by Friends of Glen Providence Park
Two weeks ago I asked Borough Council for a statement on this matter now that it will be going back to the courts.  I've yet to hear anything, however I may have an update later this week.

Yesterday, the FROGs resorted to dirty politics and are vilifying a private swim over a two-lane design that the majority want along with the RTM school board, police, fire, emergency services and adjacent municipalities.

Happy 5th Anniversary to Per Lei Boutique
Retail is hard in Media and many other small towns, but Per Lei makes it look easy.  Having won a lot of notoriety for their exquisite and fashionable apparel, they have also reached a 5 year anniversary miles stone.  Bruce and Candice have done a great job with this store that brings a nice touch to the town.  Per Lie also has another store in downtown Avalon, NJ.

SUPER WAWA
Council Meeting on Project Nov 7th 7:30pm
Get ready, at least for more of the same here in Media.  The fiasco that's unfolded over the Third Street Bridge regarding the borough council's mismanagement and favoritism is already shaping up to be an interesting experience for Wawa.  The poll conducted this week shows a tremendous favoritism towards a super wawa, but the real pulse are the many people I talk to who like this idea.   Unfortunately, there's been no talks or negotiations between Borough Council and the other parties, at least not recently.  In fact, I'm told Borough Council isn't interested in the project.  Sound familiar?
Media show strong support for new Wawa

It was good to hear the the Media Business Authority passed a resolution in support of the Super Wawa.  As for your voice, you can contact Borough Manager, Jeff Smith at jasmith@mediaborough.com There will also be a Planning Commission meeting about this project on November 7th (7:30pm).

Wawa is a tremendously well liked company that has given generously to communities all over. 35 jobs, $1 million in contracts and a steady tax revenue potentially coming to Media should warrant a lot more than "we're not interested."  And if Borough Council has a better idea then let's hear it, because this community shouldn't again have to suffer from lack of leadership, fairness and direction.

If you didn't receive a mailed letter from the Wawa CEO, "Support Hometown Growth," here it is from this week.

Media Residents Complain about antics by FROGs!

I've not yet seem them at my house, but that didn't stop the calls, emails and texts I've been steadily receiving this afternoon from residents and businesses complaining about the latest antics by the Friends of Glen Providence Park.

First off, there are more Friends of the Glen Providence park for two-way option, than there are for a one-way, but they probably don't want you to know that.  Secondly, no one or group should have say(rule) over anyone else when it comes to a community park.  Period. Have these people made this park their own private club?

Unfortunately, the latest passive aggressive tactic by this group is to leave flyers at people's homes which illustrate  a one way option.  Again, who's going to pay for this alleged cobblestone, planter and walkway that's depicted on the brochure? Who's even paying for the brochure itself? We know they got Councilman Davidson to pay for a website for their cause.  As it is now, the pandering to this group by Borough Council, who campaigned for their cause, has the whole issue back in COURT!  16 years and not one brick set AND IT'S BACK IN COURT!

But the politics of this group go further.  They've also made it a high priority to vilify the BLCC as being the party who is obstructing this option.  To the contrary.  Not only do the residents and business prefer a two-way road, so do the the fire, police, emergency services and RTM school board.  If you want to go further, Middletown and Upper Providence have formally submitted resolutions for this option as well.

Just this week I learned that even a District Judge had spoken to Council President, Brian Hall months back for the need to have this bridge open due to accidents occurring at Ridley Creek and Baltimore Pike.  Anything that can alleviate traffic at that intersection, whether to or from,  should be yet another reason for a two-way option.

State Street Cleanup Today (Oct 13th) - 9am to 11am

Through the organizational efforts of TimeBank Media/Transition Town and the Media Business Authority, community volunteers will be gathering on State Street this morning from 9am to 11am to clean up trash, debris and cigarette butts.

This cleanup happens the second Saturday of each month.
