ZAC's Burgers closes store in Media, PA

Zac's Burgers in Media closes.

Last week I alluded to the closure of a store on State Street, though with held the name until final.  Well, now it’s final.  Zac’s Burgers located on the corner of Orange and State Street has closed its Media store for good.  You can read theinterview with the owner and reasons for why the business couldn’t continue atMedia Patch.

With what is considered a very desirable location in downtown Media, it’ll be interesting to see what takes the place of Zac’s.

Mayor Bob McMahon needs to STEP UP and SPEAK UP about the Third Street Bridge Project.

With the clock now set by Judge Proud regarding last week's meeting on the Third Street Bridge dam, time is running out to get this project resolved.  After 16 years, millions of dollars on the line and time put forth by many in this town and adjacent areas; it’s time for people to step up.

Where is it?
If there’s anyone in a position to do that, that hasn’t, it’s Media’s Mayor Bob McMahon.  Earlier this Fall the mayor made it abundantly clear to me that he supports a two-way roadway over the proposed dam.  He even made a concerted effort to make sure I knew that! However, when heated debate took place on the subject at the September council meeting, he failed to speak up about Media's biggest issue. Not one word.

I understand that he technically doesn’t have a vote in the matter, but no one can tell me that Bob McMahon after 18 years as mayor doesn’t have influence on this issue.  He's been involved in it from the very beginning.  If there’s been a formal statement by the mayor on the Third Street Bridge that I’ve missed, I’d like to see it.  Otherwise, we’ll most likely see a stalemate on this project by people who chose to stand on the sidelines when Media relied on them to lead the cause.

Media Borough Council’s  strategy of “lawsuit Leadership” is exactly why we’re no closer to resolving this issue than  we were 16 years ago.  If a court decision ultimately decides this, then what exactly do people on council have to show for the last year of their service?  What was accomplished by this group other than the time and expenses it cost businesses and residents?  Nothing?  Not quite, it leaves us with one of the most dangerous dams in the State of PA that was fully funded, but yet squandered by a council that chose special interests over the safety of  the community.

How was Santa's Arrival last Friday?

Last week we had some controversy over the location of Santa’s arrival this year.  As some may know this was moved to the courthouse steps after many years of being held at the corner of State Street and Jackson (Spasso’s).  A few approached me who were suspicious this may have been Spasso’s decision to not hold this at their location, though I’ve not heard anything that would lead me to believe that was the case.  As I’ve told many who have asked, I believe the decision was made to move the location to safely accommodate the most people.

As expected, there is always feedback on these things regarding a change to either the time, production or location.  I won’t go through all of them but the two popular items entailed the location and the production of the event.  Some people liked the location, a few thought it should have been moved closer to State St and Veteran’s Square and others wish it was back on State Street.   I think there may be some value at moving it closer to State Street by setting up a stage on Veterans Square by Jasper St.  Perhaps have Santa enter either in front or behind the stage while arriving and leaving via Jasper St.  That way you are closer to the business district and can see the Christmas lights; while better managing the crowd.

As for the production of the event, I thought the courthouse columns looked great.  However, I did hear there was some confusion over the arrival of Santa and the route in which he was coming in on.  I understand the power was lost momentarily which also through things off a bit.  I know people weren’t happy about that, but items I’m sure will get worked out by next year.

If you have further constructive feedback, let’s hear it as it’ll help the people that run this event.

BREAKING: Judge gives Media Borough 30 days to work out differences on Third Street Bridge.

Judge gives Media Boro 30 days to work out differnces

#delcotimes
#mediapa

A meeting was held this morning with Judge Proud regarding  the Third Street Bridge roadway differences and subsequent contempt of court petition filed by BLCC.  The County, as a stakeholder in the lawsuit was also present and joined BLCC in their interpretation as “re-establish” meaning two-way access. As reported before, the RTM School District, Middletown and Upper Providence have also passed resolutions for the two-way road.

From what I’m understanding, Judge Proud has given Media Borough a month to essentially workout the differences.  Should that not happen, another hearing is to be scheduled for December in which a final decision is expected.

With millions in funding being held up through continued litigation,  Media Borough council now has 30 days to either accepting a two-way design, or continuing to fight this out in court which could potentially end in a stalemate.  A legal stalemate would most likely bring this back to exactly where we were sixteen years ago, but with one catch – NO MONEY TO FIX The Bridge.

BREAKING: RTM School District AGAIN states need for two-way road over Third St. Bridge

16 years for a bridge!

I wasn't at the meeting last Thursday, but Media Patch is reporting that the RTM School Board has again stated the need for a two-way road across the Third Street Bridge.  The board cited safety and reduced transportation costs a factors having major impact in their decision.

Santa Arrives on November 23rd, but not on State St.

#delcotimes
 #mediapa
Santa to arrive at courthouse this year.  But why?

Santa's arrival is still on for November 23rd, but not on State Street.  WHAT? I was actually surprised how many people can up to me late this afternoon asking why this was changed to now be held at the courthouse.  For as long as I can remember this was always done on State Street to showcase the Christmas tree and lights.  To be honest, I don't know why the venue was changed.

The subsequent question that followed was whether the New Year's Eve ball drop will still be on State Street at the corner of Jackson and State.  Truthfully, I've not heard anything to lead me believe it won't, but I'll get an answer tomorrow.

Media in Two Minutes - Sunday, November 18th 2012

#delcotimes
#mediapa

On the verge of the holiday season, here we are again with another exciting episodode of Media in Two Minutes.  Thanks to the readers who enjoy the format and never let me forget if I miss a Sunday.

OK Let's GO!

10th Annual Jazz Fest
State St. Before the crowd arrives
I didn't attend but heard good things about last night's Jazz Fest on State Street.  I always thought this was the lesser of the three (Americana, Blues) in terms of attendance, but it certainly was a nice evening last night.  As easy as this looks to host and produce, it's not.  A special thanks to all those who volunteer and direct this event.  Regardless of who is playing, this series is always well organized and professionally conducted.  For a town like Media, we're lucky to have live entertainment like this.

To the right is a picture of State Street before the crowds arrived.

Recognition of our Vets
Media Vets (Photo by Mainline Magazine)
If you didn't catch the post earlier in the week about the photo shoot done by Main Line Magazine, here it is.  A little thought can have a tremendous impact:  My neighbor stopped me just yesterday to thank me for the article I did.  I told him it was a pleasure and that all our vets should be recognized.  It's the least I can do and am glad I can do it.

GET YOUR FOOD IN!
Today is Earth and State's last day to drop of food for victims of Hurricane Sandy.  They'll be taking drop-offs from 11am to 1pm today.   It's also the last day for the Plumstead Food Drive.  There will be a bunch of frozen turkeys dropped off to them at 11am today.

Thanksgiving EVE Jam @ Picasso's w/Jimmy Shoe and The Broozers
To kick off the Thanksgiving holiday Jimmy Shoe, The Broozer and many special guests will be playing at Picasso's on Wednesday Night 9pm to 1am

SEPTA - GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS
If you need to know if your train is running late and by how much, check out Septa's new BALDWIN.

As for the Good/Bad News; the Delcotimes.com has reported that Septa is in the process of extending the line out to Wawa.  Plans include the purchase of land from Middletown for construction of 600 car garage. Unfortunately, there is a ways to go yet with regard to the needed financing.  Perhaps a small step, but based on the article, it looks like Septa has this as a top priority.

A business to close on State Street
I've known this for sometime now, but looks like people are now openly discussing it.  I won't say which business it is, but it has been here for quite sometime and has a very desirable location.

Third Street Bridge
There will be interesting news about this bridge next week.  It's unimaginable that as we approach 17 years, nothing has been started on a bridge that was fully financed to begin a year ago.  An all too familiar failure in Media government.  Results matter, as does borough officials showing up for work.

Media, PA 2012 Leaf Schedule:

GREAT JOB BY MEDIA HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
I just want to take a minute to recognize the great job done by the Media Highway Department.  Along with the help of the contractors, the decorations look GREAT on State Street.  Believe me, people notice!

Area Veterans take Spotlight in Main Line Today Magazine Photo Shoot

Main Line Today Magazine did a photo shoot recently of local area veteran’s.  Here in Media, we had 7 veterans proudly represented.  I happen to know of a few of them, but one in particular, John “Jackie” Heavens, I know quite well and lives on my street.  Jackie recently retired from the Media Highway Department and has lived in Media all his life.  An active member of the Media VFW, Jackie without fail helps to organize the wreath placements at the Media Wall of Honor and Courthouse steps on Memorial Day.

Showing up for work isn’t one of Media Borough Council’s priorities

Earlier this year it was found that one councilman missed 5 consecutive MBA meetings he is the chair of.  This is a committee that receives approximately $75, 000 in taxpayer money and yet he didn’t feel the need to show up for almost have the year.  In 2011, he missed half the meetings.

Based on Borough Council meeting minutes, it now shows that the Treasurer who holds a paid position, is also not showing up to the monthly council meetings. If correct, he’s only attended  one meeting this year, which was in August!  Here’s the link to the Media Borough meeting minutes.  Perhaps this has something to do with the dysfunction that’s led to 16 years for a bridge, 15 years for traffic signals (CMAQ project) and $20,000 for 5 minutes of video sold to us by a telemarketer.

If it’s true he’s been told he doesn’t have to show up, I’d like to know who decided this.  If you hold a PAID position in this borough or anywhere, you’re expected to be there.  Period.

Another councilman was found to have angrily called an RTM official to openly complain their need to officially discuss the Third Street Bridge repair.  A bridge crucial to students living in the Woodlands development,   He even prepared and read a statement at  a council meeting which embarrassingly insulted BLCC,  RTM, Middletown and Upper Providence residents  who were interested in the outcome of Third Street Bridge.

As Democrats, Republicans and Independents, we all need to work together and speak up for what is right and expected of our elected officials.

Media/Elwyn rail commuters, meet Septa's Baldwin

Septa Train Schedules in REAL TIME

If you ride the Media/Elwyn line into the city, you’ll know two things.  1) Parking after 7:30am at the Media station can be non-existent  2) There isn’t any way to track Septa train schedules in real time.  For the former, if you ride a scooter/bike to the station, there is plenty of parking at any time of the day.  Now, riding in the cold or sometimes rain is not ideal, especially in a suit, but I’ve never not had parking.  As for the second item, well, I’m happy to report that Septa got with the times and recently released a website that is designed for smartphones.  In fact, it is excellent at providing train schedules and realtime updates on late arrivals/departures.  There are some minor improvements needed, but I like it a lot and is definetly worth a try.

Real time tracking on your smartphone.
The site/service goes by the name of Baldwin.  For those not familiar with the area’s history, Baldwin Locomotive was the gold standard in steam powered trains andhad a huge factory by the Delaware River in Delaware County.  The name is cool, and so is the service.  You can visit the site at http://baldwin.ph.  Access it with a smartphone and bookmark (it provides a nice icon on Iphones) to your home screen.  It will also save your setting too, so make sure you add your route before saving.

And don’t forget, Septa also provides a handy twitter feed for the Media/Elwyn Line, as well as the Media 101 Trolley Line.  I’ve found it useful on many occasions, especially during the snow season.

A Tremendous Thanks to our Veterans!

We'd like to take the time to THANK our Veterans!

Looking forward to today's Veteran's Day Parade in Media, PA

It's Media in Two Minutes - November 11, 2012

Both the weather and I are a big foggy this morning, but fear not, here's this week's Media in Two Minutes!  Thanks to readers who have really taken a liking to this Sunday post.

Ok, Let's GO!

Bazaar of All Nations Documentary Premiere's TONIGHT
Yes, you can buy the DVD.  Yes, you can view clips on You Tube, but tonight is the premiere release of the documentary showcasing the Bazaar of All Nations!  Check it out, it will show at 5pm EST on Channel 12 WHYY.
Paving on Providence Road
The road paving on Providence Road continues.  Half the road is completed, with the other side expected to be done in the next few days.  They've been working on Sunday evenings, so don't be surprised if they resume work tonight.  So far, so good.  The work completed makes a noticeable difference.

Media welcomes Viso's
Line out the door at Viso's
Yesterday they had the grand opening for Viso's Authentic Italian Desserts located on Jackson Street.  With a healthy crowd and lines all day long, this is place getting off to a great start.  The only thing that sells better than "hot cakes," was no doubt Viso's $1 cannoli's.

Colonial Plantation has 6th Annual Fundraiser
I haven't spent much time at the Ridley Creek Colonial Plantation, but I was invited to their 6th annual fundraiser on Friday.  This is a great group with a lot of history behind it. Interesting to know that they have a farmer to look after the land and livestock. There are many workshops hosted by this group that teach anything from how to make bread, to soap making.

Take down your signs!
The plantation is a great resource for the area and just a few minute ride from Media.  Check them out on Facebook.

Political Yard Signs
I don't expect to see every political yard sign taken down overnight, but there seems to be some progress made over the weekend.  There will be some who will leave their signs up for whatever reason, but they really ALL should come down along public areas.

And please, it you're taking the time to take down your signs and your opponents are next to them, take them too.  Thanks

Thanks to those who worked the Polls on Election Day
It can't be said enough, so I'll say it again: Thank you to all who worked the polls which allowed everyone to vote!

Media's 53rd Veteran's Day Parade will be held November 12th 2012 at 11:11am
Everyone loves a parade and this one on Monday may be Media's biggest!  Stop by and thank the troops for their service to our country.

Nova Bank closed, leaving another ? for the Baltimore Ave and Providence Rd.
NOVA BANK CLOSED
While everyone had been focused on the proposed Super Wawa and subsequent traffic it will present, just across the street Nova Bank quietly closed on October 26th. You may remember this place as the former Media Burger King before becoming Nova Bank.  It's hard to tell what will happen to this building, as the FDIC took over the bank assets after a suitable financial institution could not be found to run the operations.

In a perfect world, it would make sense for the current Starbucks to occupy this property. Off loading their traffic to the other side of Baltimore Ave would only help the intersection and current parking problem.
Sketch of proposed Springfield Hotel

Is a future Media Hampton Inn still relevant?
If the sketches of the proposed Springfield Hotel are any indication of what they are building, then the future Media Hampton Inn may have just become outdated.   It has been six years and the market is quickly changing. Just this weekend, having learned of Springfield plans, I decided to walk from where the Hampton Inn will be built to down town Media.  It's a hassle crossing streets and waiting for lights to change while easily being a 10-15 minute trek.

Springfield is obviously going for a different experience than what Media is proposing.  Having a downtown is a great advantage and walking to it is a nice ideal, but to me it's too far of a walk. Especially at night and with adverse weather.  People who stay at in the Media Hampton Inn will be driving to State Street.

49th Annual Delco Old Timers Banquet a HUGE SUCCESS
Marjorie Ann Moat (for field hockey), and at right is Jane Short-Smith (for basketball)
I'll do a special post on this next week, but wanted to thank the organizers for a great event last Wednesday that recognized the athletic achievements of those from the community.

Here are two recipients of this year's award.

Viso's Italian Desserts Opens in Media, PA Jackson Street

Viso's Authentic Italian Desserts had their grand opening today on Jackson Street.  It was not only a great event, but well attended too with lines in front of the cashiers all day long.  If you're a big cannoli fan, you're in luck as that seemed to be a very popular item.

They are open Monday through Saturday - 10:30 - 6:30pm

You can find them on Facebook too: Viso's

Congratulations to Viso's and welcome to the neighborhood!

Viso's on Jackson Street

Providence Road being repaved. Completion expected in the next few days.

Providence Road (southbound)
Last week Providence Road was re-grooved in order for paving to begin.  A few people were interested on the timelines for it to be completed.  As of today, half the road (southbound) is done.  No word on when the other side will be completed, but perhaps in the next few days.

Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation's - 6th Annual Fall Fundraiser

A great fundraiser held last night at the Edgmont Country Club to support Ridley Creek Park's,  Colonial Plantation.  Channel 6 Action News, David Murphy was the Emcee and Auctioneer for a lot of generous gift donations.

A special thanks to Chair, Pat Theodore and the rest of the board for hosting such a successful event.

Quizzo Monday at Stephen's on State, featuring Alec Mendez

When will the Media Hampton Inn be built? It may not matter.

Sketches of proposed Springfield Hotel
The very first thing I thought when I saw the drawings for the new hotel to be built next to the Springfield County Club was, "Wow, is the 6 year old proposed Hampton Inn in Media still relevant?"  Six years ago when the property was purchased and the concept of a hotel was proposed, it seemed like a good idea.  96 rooms, conference facilities,  close to the airport, no other hotel around and a vital piece that would compliment  Media Borough commerce.

For better or worse, I wasn't the only one who thought the concept was interesting.  Every few months I was asked by a Healthcare company in Newtown Square as to when the new hotel would be opened.  They have a lot of people fly in for training and meetings and were excited to have a facility in Media that would fit their needs while making an enjoyable experience for their guests.  As excited as they were, they no longer ask when the Hampton Inn will be completed.  Truthfully, it’s been so long, I suppose a lot of others have forgotten about it too, let alone wonder when it’ll be open.

In my opinion, Media will have a need for some sort of hotel, but since the market is quickly changing, would the type and size of the hotel also change? Would a boutique hotel like Hotel Warner in West Chester be a more appropriate fit now?  Look, if I'm coming in town for the first time with no perspective of the area and see the future Springfield hotel compared to a the Media Hampton Inn, I'm going with the former.  I suppose a large percentage of others in that situation would agree too.

Six or even two years ago,  Swarthmore College might have been happy to see a hotel in Media, and so would have the company I mentioned, but it appears Springfield may have that market identified with a hotel that a Media Hampton Inn will have trouble competing with.  This leads to an interesting scenario: Can Media now economically support a hotel business that was proposed six years ago in a competitive climate now developing from Springfield and eventually from the Middletown Franklin Mint Center?  I can assure you, the Media Hampton Inn won’t be booked 365 days a year with people just interested in coming and staying in Media for the sake of being in Everybody’s Hometown, this hotel will need to rely on an offset of corporate, business and leisure travel that is quickly drying up due to competition.  I can see that and I’m sure the decision makers can too.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Hampton Inn started construction tomorrow, announced a delay/sale, or came out and notified the community the project is being cancelled.  I just don’t know, but after six years and the hype surrounding this hotel,  I’d have thought there would have been more urgency to begin construction.

Breaking: Media's NOVA Bank taken over by FDIC

Media bank taken over by FDIC
The determination of what will be done with the “gateway” of Media has been in the news lately.  With a proposed Super Wawa near the intersection of Providence Rd and Baltimore Avenue, many are voicing their concerns over traffic.  It looks like this may continue to be a hot spot with what will surely be another tenant on the other side of the street sometime in the near future.

On October 26, the FDIC announced the closure of the Nova Bank corporation.  The FDIC was unable to find a financial institution to take over the bank's operations, and therefore has absorbed Nova’s assets.  For residents that used this bank and have concerns, please review the pressrelease.

From what I can tell, this bank never generated a high volume of traffic to the area.  At times, it was hard to tell if it was even open.  Perhaps an ideal business for this area, as related to traffic, but what’s next?  Before it was a bank, the property was a fast food restaurant.

The building that sits on the property now was specifically built to be a bank.  It’ll be interesting to see if it’ll be used again as a financial institution, or made into something else.  Either way, what’s put their will also represent the gateway of Media and will most likely generate more traffic than what was there prior.

A tremendous thanks to all the Poll works and Volunteers

Thanks to the polling workers who allowed us to vote
Over the last few years I've been making sure I'm at the Western Precinct to setup voting machines in case others aren't there to do it.  This year was no exception, as the polls are notoriously short staffed.  Luckily, I've gotten to know these machines, so setup isn't that bad.  These polls should have at least six to eight staffers, but usually operate on as little as three.  Counting setup and breakdown, the day can easily go as long as 14hours for these people.

I can't thank the folks enough who took the time work the polls so the rest of the town could vote on such an important election.  Many had to take the day off from their place of employment in order to help the cause.  But they didn't complain, they rolled up their sleeves and got the job done! THANK YOU!

It should also be pointed out that it is a disgrace that members of borough council, who know the polls are short staffed and do nothing about it, come out to their own precincts and hand out their political literature.  And when one was asked in the Western Precinct what they are doing to help the people working inside, one says "take it up with Debbie Krull (Co-Chair - Media Democrats)."  Unbelievable!

…and about those political yard signs.

Please take down your sign!

I’ve never heard anyone complain after an election about having their political yard sign stolen.  In fact, I’m sure some may be quietly hopeful what was alleged as a “theft” two day ago, now becomes a good deed.  However, it’s safe to say the market for used yard signs is zero and if they didn’t blow away during superstorm Sandy, they’ll be around for awhile.

To this end, I think we can all agree it’s time to take the signs down.  If there are signs in areas that may be on municipal, abandoned or public property, please consider taking those down too.  Or let me know where they are, and I’ll have someone take them down.

Media, PA bank robbery reported on Wednesday

A robbery at First Cornerstone bank located on 2 West Baltimore Avenue has been reported by Media Patch.  The incident occurred yesterday and is currently being investigated.
This is the second robbery of a bank in Media within the last month.  The other robbery occurred  in October at the Sovereign Bank on Providence Road.

Anyone with information is asked to call the following number: 215-418-4000
